Average annual population growth rate: 2.6%

Median age of the population: 17.7 years

Population under 15 years: 43.6%

Women represent 51% of the population.

population living below the US$1.25: 40 %

Life expectancy :51 years.

National health budget : 6% of the GDP

HIV-AIDS FACTS(1)HIV prevalence in the general population: 4.3% (DHS, 2011). It varies from 1.2% in the Far -North region to 7.2% in the South region

Prevalence among women: 5.6% (DHS, 2011).

Prevalence among men: 2.9% (DHS, 2011).

Prevalence in young people aged 15 to 24 years:1.7% (DHS, 2011).

45.3% of new infections are recorded in heterosexual couples (DHS, 2011).

6 males out of 10 and nearly 5 in 10 women do not know their HIV status (DHS, 2011)

Among men who have sex with men in Yaoundé and Douala is 44% and 24% respectively(IBBS 2011)

Rate of HIV status to 06 weeks in exposed children:8.4% 2012 ( CNLS,2012 Annual Report)

Prevalence among soldiers and military:6%(Behavioural and HIV seroprevalence among forces of defenses of Cameroon, 2011)

Prisoners: HIV status among new inmates at the entrance:8% (2012 Annual Report , CNLS)

Number of Orphans and Vulnerable Children :304,210 (CNLS, EPPS, Spectrum Report, 2009).

33% begin antiretroviral treatment and only 25% observe the treatment

SOME CHALLENGES… (1)Stigma and Discrimination

The study of the index of stigma showed that:◦ 70% of PLWHA face stigma and discrimination due to HIV status and / or self-

stigma ;◦ Less than a fifth of PLWHA have heard of the Bill of Rights on HIV / AIDS or

law / policy in Cameroon that protects the rights of people living with HIV ;◦ 13% of PLWHA lost their jobs because of discrimination by their employer or

co-workers;◦ 5% of PLWHA were denied sexual and reproductive health services because

of their HIV status;◦ 18% of PLWHA have been victims of a violation of at least one of their rights

SOME CHALLENGES… (2)Stock out 54% of eligible adults PLWHA have not had access to ARVs in 2012 mainly due to stockouts of ARVs.

66% of eligible children do not have access to ARVs in 2012

FinancingFrom 2011-2013, only 55% of the needed resources for the fight against HIV / AIDS have been mobilized

a heavy dependence on external resources

SOME CHALLENGES… (3) Low ARV coverage due to :

Low Number of patients on ARV treatment : 130. 000(=37% of the national target ) in late 2013

the small proportion of the population who know their HIV status

the weak relation with the management structures

the high number of lost to follow-up even when on treatment.

TARGET and PRIORITY GROUPSPersons Living with HIV/AIDS

The ‘drivers’ of the epidemic : Sex Workers, Men who have Sex with Men (MSM), drug users.

The Pygmies : extremely vulnerable populations with a prevalence of 7.4% higher than the prevalence in the general population

Vulnerables: Youth and adolescents (boys and girls), militaries, truck drivers , prisoners, the disabled, refugees, the pygmies and the Bororo

Priority interventions (1)..Behavior Change Communication. 26% of women aged 15-49 have a "thorough" knowledge of HIV/AIDS (DHS,2011)

Condoms usage.Coverage: 66 % (CNLS annual report 2014)

Counselling for voluntary testing: 28.5% of people aged 15-49 years have been tested and know their HIV status (DHS,2011)

PMTCT : 80% of HIV positive pregnant women benefit from PMTCT and 50% of children born from HIV infected women received antiretroviral treatment

STDs. Only 25 % of the needs covered (CAMNAFAW, 2013)

Safe blood transfusion

Priority interventions (2)…In August 2012, Cameroon adopted option B+ for the PMTCT

A working group on Stigma and Discrimination Legal protection of PLWHA and people affected: (the GTC / CNLS, technical and financial partners , ILO , Civil societies) has been set up to propose and coordinate interventions to promote the rights of PLWHA in Cameroon.

Action plan for the reduction of stigma and discrimination PLHWA;

SOME PROGRESS…Overall 29,143,882 condoms (27,491,025 male and 1,652,857 female) were distributed in 2013 in Cameroon, with an increase in the amount distributed.

The antiretroviral treatment coverage among HIV + pregnant women to prevent MTCT of HIV is 57%
