Milia are cysts that are filled with a protein called keratin. They may appear just under the skin or on the roof of the mouth as small, raised bumps with white or yellow tops. They are most often found on and around the nose, eyes, cheeks and forehead, however, they could develop anywhere on the body. Milia are typically found in clusters. They are usually painless and present no symptoms, but some patients may experience itchiness or irritation. There are two main types of milia, primary and secondary.

Primary milia occur mainly in newborns, though adults of all ages may experience them, too. Their cause is largely unknown. These bumps are often mistakenly called baby acne when they occur in newborns, and have nothing to do with sebum production. Primary milia develop when dead skin cells become trapped under the skin in small pockets near the surface. Unable to properly shed themselves, the cells form a cyst.

Secondary milia is similar to primary milia, but it occurs directly as a result of skin damage. It may develop after severe blistering, burning or rash. As the skin heals and dead skin cells become trapped, they form milia. In rarer cases, long-term sun damage or long-term use of topical steroid creams could cause secondary milia.

Anyone can develop milia at any time, but newborns, those who are recovering from an injury to the skin and those with sun-damaged skin are most at risk.

Most milia will disappear on their own over a period of several weeks. Do not scrub or pick at milia. Because milia may be mistaken for other skin conditions, it’s always best to get a diagnosis from an experienced physician and follow their recommended course of treatment.

Milia may be removed and prevented with regular exfoliation using a formula with salicylic acid. It can also be improved with professional microdermabrasion treatments or peels. In more severe cases, your doctor may recommend in-office removal using cryotherapy or lasers.
