Since April 2009 we have provided a home and a family to 8 Cambodian orphans

MaD RDP works in installing and refurbishing water pumps, community development work and building

sanitation units and houses for villages.

MaD PROJECTS IN BRIEFMaD Adventures

Registered social enterprise in the UK: organises adventure tours in Cambodia, 100% of profits going

towards MaD’s projects. On April 1st we launch our first tour: the inaugural event of the MaD Tuk Tuk

Challenge, where participating teams will attempt to drive Tuk Tuks from Siem Reap to Sihanookville over a

period of 10 days.

FOCUS ON M.A.D.

In June 2008 we launched a pilot project in basic healthcare with MaD working in rural areas

without easy/ready access to Health Centres.

August 2008 saw MaD launch M.A.D. Medical Assistance Direct as a mobile healthcare

service to rural communities in partnership with Provincial Health Centres.

January 2009 MaD having had several months of data and project experience redesigned the

M.A.D. Program to become it’s current incarnation as a School Based Healthcare &

Education Program focusing on the District of Bakong.

In August we launched our first series of rural clinics, offering primary healthcare

in remote areas.This was in conjunction with Provincial Health department Health Centres and

continued until December 2008.


Having spent 6 months in the field we revised the program after discussion with

Provincial Health Department, Health Centres and the M.A.D. School Healthcare

& Education Program evolved.

M.A.D.’s Mobile Clinic

MaD’s Mobile Health clinic consists of a converted Tuk Tuk which is driven by a quad bike instead of a motorbike. It is the first of its kind in Cambodia


The addition of the quad bike means we can navigate the roughest of roads and reach the

remotest rural locations, even in the rainy season.


Every day we load up the Tuk Tuk with our medical equipment and supplies, and can set up our clinics in almost any location

where we are needed

M.A.D. TreatmentWe can provide a wide variety of basic treatment to

patients at our clinics, including but not limited to:• Treatment of wounds, burns, injuries and/or skin

conditions• Antibiotic treatment for chest / throat infections• Oral rehydration therapy and advice for patients

suffering from diarrhoea• Reassurance and treatment for simple cough/cold

symptoms• Recommendations on physiotherapy for those with

muscle/skeletal problems• Multivitamins for those suffering from malnutrition • Antibiotic treatment for urinary tract infections the

treatment of ailments such as haemorrhoids

M.A.D. TreatmentWhen we encounter more serious cases or when we

suspect patients to be suffering from serious diseases such as malaria, pneumonia, dengue, TB

or cancer we refer them to the hospital in town and, when necessary, organise and pay for

transport to take them there.

M.A.D. TreatmentThis system helps to relieve the strain on public

healthcare services by acting as a screening service, preventing people who do not need the

service from wasting their and the hospital’s time and money by using it, and prompting those who

do need advanced medical treatment to seek assistance sooner.

M.A.D. School Healthcare & Education

We cover 12 schools and 5 orphanages in Bakong, servicing over 2,500

students.


We visit the schools on a rotating basis so that we see each school roughly every 8 – 10 weeks. Every time we visit a

school, we set up a clinic in the morning and the afternoon in order to ensure we cover all the students


An important part of what we do is to teach and share healthcare

education with children at school.


Using training aids and materials from Provincial Health Department we

discuss many issues with questions and answer time.


There is a chance for everyone to ask what they wish and answers are

discussed openly and frankly.


An important focus of our health education seminars is on WASH issues (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene):

“Children are often eager to learn and willing to absorb new ideas. New hygiene behaviour learned at school can lead to

life-long positive habits. Teachers can function as role models, not only for the children but also within the community.

School children can influence the behaviour of family members - both adults and younger siblings - and thereby

positively influence the community as a whole. It is also more cost-effective to work with children in school-based

programmes than with adults.” - UNICEF


Separate session are held for young girls, to discuss issues specific to

them.


A crucial element of our basic healthcare is making sure every

student is given a de-worming tablet.

From January – December 2009 we dispensed 9000 de-worming tablets


With each visit to a school we leave literature for the students and school

M.A.D.’s Village ClinicsWe continue to set up clinics at various villages in Bakong

every Thursday. We currently set up clinics at 12 villages on a rotating basis, servicing around 30 villages in total.

aged, to the elderly.

the villages that we service.

Now by far the most common ailments we see are cuts and wounds and coughs and colds.

• Health education: people who have received education from us are now more aware about issues that can cause diseases and illnesses

to spread and are therefore in a better position to take preventative action against such problems

• Basic treatment: basic treatment of ailments such as coughs, colds, cuts/wounds, chest infections, diarrhoea

etc stops them from getting worse and becoming a serious problem

tablets 4 times a year keeps the majority of students free from intestinal parasites and treats those who do have infestations before they become too much of an issue

we can catch symptoms of dangerous diseases and illnesses early and refer the patient to a hospital before their condition becomes life-threatening

Program back into Puok District, with a focus on Reul Commune, where we will also be launching a large-scale

Water and Sanitation program

• We will still service Bakong, but we feel there is no longer a need for us to service schools and villages there

as frequently as we currently do and so we will scale back our clinics in Bakong to once every 6 months

Reul; all of the villages in Reul; some additional schools in Puok District; and to continue servicing all of the schools we

currently do in Bakong• This way we aim to be providing a medical service to nearly

20,000 people (approximately 8,000 school students)

We have recently been donated the money for a battery powered TV/DVD player and a series

of health education DVDs, all in Khmer

education aspect of our program: the TV can be set up an played any where as it does not need a power source and the DVDs are fully interactive and so far have been very effective

at teaching people about a wide range of health issues.
