Page 1: Report TB Day 2012 in Milan, Italy

Report TB Day 2012 in Milan, Italy Stop TB Italy, as every year, has organized events to raise awareness of the issues surrounding the problem of tuberculosis among the general population and the health care providers and has obtained a good resonance on the national press and social networks. On March 23rd, Stop TB Italy, together with the Department for Social Policies and Culture of Health of the Municipality of Milan and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), organized the symposium: "Urban TB Control", held in conjunction with other events in Barcelona, London and Rotterdam, with the aim to emphasize the critical aspects of tuberculosis in large metropolitan areas and search for innovative approaches and tools to address them. About 150 persons, who highly appreciated the initiative, attended the symposium. Pieces of music and literature, related to tuberculosis, have helped to create a particularly impressive climate, even amplified by the beautiful and fascinating venue of Palazzo Marino, town hall of Milan. The symposium have had the particularity to gather all the actors involved in urban tuberculosis control in Milan: doctors and health workers, voluntary organizations, health care providers in prisons, social workers of the Municipality of Milan and people directly involved in recent outbreaks. The presence of the town Councilor Majorino, who opened and closed the symposium, has helped to give an official character to the proposed solutions that should be taken into consideration in terms of revision and implementation of control procedures in the Milan area, especially regarding the social determinants of the disease. All the actors involved in the processes of urban TB control stated the need to create an alliance capable of awareness, information and prevention on an ongoing basis and without discrimination and scaremongering. The indispensable conditions to make the network effective are: a strong common feeling, a coordination that enhances the capabilities of each actor, and the use of homogeneous interventions, procedures and languages. On the afternoon of March 24th, the film "Never give up", made in Dharamsala (India) among the Tibetan community in exile, has been screened, within the African, Asian and Latin American Film Festival. Stop TB Italy has contributed to the distribution of the film in Italy, which was originally dedicated to the local population, in order to raise awareness among the Italian public opinion about TB in a highly endemic community. On the evening of March 24th, Stop TB Italy has also organized with the sponsorship of Pfizer Foundation and Lilly MDR-TB Partnership a concert in the auditorium of Radio Popolare, which saw the participation of groups that has been collaborating with the association for some years. Within the campaign "Le suoniamo alla tubercolosi”, born in 2010, Stop TB Italy proposes music as an element of raising awareness about TB among the general population, especially young people. The evening was also aimed at raising funds for the project to support the program of tuberculosis control in the health district of Dioffior in Senegal, which Stop TB Italy hopes will start soon. In the concert program, after the exhibitions of LabenD and Calabrolesi, exponents of the Italian pop and rock music, there was the performance of Modou and his Senegalese group, that Stop TB Italy has choose to create an imaginary bridge between the two continents that share the same passion for music.
