MESSAGE

DearFriends,

The focus of Sukarya’s work as a non-government developmentorganizationhasbeenonimprovingthehealthstatusoftheurbanandruralpoorespeciallyincertaindistrictsofHaryana;wheregenderandsocial concerns impacting onwomen’s accessibility to economic andsocialresourcesarefarmoreglaring.Sukarya’smotto‘Betterhealth-bettersociety’hasguideditshealthrelatedprogramsincommunities.Howeverovertheyears,thevisionofSukaryaandalongwithit,itsareaofoperationhaveevolvedfromcurativeprogramsfocusingondirecthealth benefits to subsume preventive health and advocacy initiatives thatareequallycriticalinimpactinghealthoutcomes.

Inallitseffort,theaimofSukaryahasbeentoreachtheun-reached,marginalized and most vulnerable sections of society. In a societycharacterizedbywidespreadsocial,economic,andgenderinequalities,and a society with inequitable distribution of development, thereexistsadisparityinaccesstoresources.Sukaryahasthereforebeenparticularlyfocusingonconcernsofwomenandchildrenwhoremaindisadvantagedandtowhom‘heath’remainselusivebecauseofbroadersocio-cultural and economic factors. The high infant and maternalmorbidity and mortality rate is a clear development indicator thatproves the lowhealth statusofwomenandchildren inourcountrydespitesomestridentdevelopmentinotherareas.

WiththisholisticperspectiveinmindthefocusofSukarya’sactivitieshasbeentostrengthenthephysical,emotionalwell-beingofwomen.SukaryahasalsobeenfocusingonpromotingandsensitizingcommunitiesonPrimaryHealthCare,ReproductiveChildHealthandFamilyPlanning.Promotionandstrengtheningofselfhelpgroupofwomenandprovidingsupportforentrepreneurshipactivitiesisoneofthekeyprogrammaticinterventions of Sukarya to ensure women’s economic self-reliance.Informaleducationprogramforwomenandchildren(schooldrop-outs)is another significant area of work to capacitate communities and ensure theirwell-being.

Ifeelprivilegedtosharethisbrochure,whichisahumbleattempttosharesomeofthesemajorconcernsandareasofworkofSukaryawithotherstakeholdergroups.Thebrochurealsoprovidesanoverviewofourworkespeciallyintheareaofhealthcare,incomegenerationandeducationofweakersectionsofsociety.

Thechallengesaheadareimmense.However,Sukaryaremainshopeful,to continue working and expanding its outreach, towards inclusivedevelopment where women, children and other marginalized anddeprived sectionsof societyareable toenjoybasic inalienable rights.Sukarya, therefore would like to work in partnership with other likeminded,concernedorganizationswhowouldbewillingtolendsupporttothecauseofwomen’sdevelopmentandhelpSukaryainitsendeavourtomakewomen’shealtharealityandbuildingabettersociety.

1.1 Genesis, aims and objectives

Sukarya is a non-government development organization working onissuesaffectingtheurbanandruralpoorinHaryana,withaspecialfocus on health, since 1999. It was formally registered in 2001.Forthepast10years,wehavebeenworking intheurbanslumsofGurgaonandhavealsomade inroads into ruraldevelopment in thestateofHaryana.Withahumble start in1999, Sukaryahas seenacontinuous growth in staff, beneficiaries and fields. We have a rare combinationofvolunteerswithspiritualandemotionalcommitmentandknowledgeableprofessionals.

Our vision is in achieving sound health for the poorest sections ofthesociety,especiallywomen,adolescentsandchildrenbynotjustproviding access to health care but empowering them to create ahealthy society through promotion of efficacious and affordable methodsofdiseaseprevention.Weparticularlyseektoempowerthewomenandchildrenfor‘Behtar Swasthya Behtar Samaj’.

Sukaryaaimstoachievesoundhealthforthepoorestsectionofthesociety, especially women, adolescents and children by not justproviding access to health care but empowering them to create ahealthy society through promotion of efficacious and affordable methodsofdiseaseprevention.Itwasestablishedwiththefollowingobjectives:

• Toadvocate,encourageandguidepositive‘health-seekingbehaviour’withspecialemphasisonphysical,mentalandsocialwell-being.

• To improve the maternal and child health through training,awarenesscampaigns,workshops,andhealthrelatededucation.

• Toadvocate,promoteandsensitizecommunitiesonPrimaryHealthCare,ReproductiveChildHealthandFamilyPlanning.

• To initiate and implement social and community developmentactivities in the field of healthcare, income generation for women aswellaseducationfortheweakersectionsofsociety.

• Toprovide humanitarian assistance to areas affectedby naturalcalamities such as cyclones, earthquakes and floods.

1.2 Key activities and outreach

Sukarya’sinitialworkfocusedonprovidingfreehealthservicestothepoorbyorganisinghealthcampsthatfocusedondiagnosticservices,referralservicesanddistributionofmedicinesinslumsandvillagesofDelhiandHaryana.Subsequently,uponitsexpansion,Sukaryahasbeenactivelyundertakingvariousadvocacybased,curativeandpreventivehealth projects in collaboration with the Population Foundation ofIndia. The IEC campaigns of Sukarya focuses on nutrition, hygiene,sanitationandreproductivehealthtoimprovethegeneralhealthstatusintheruralareasandurbanslumsofHaryana.Additionally,Sukaryaalsoprovideshumanitarianassistanceintimesofnaturalcalamities.The current activities of Sukarya are focused on five key areas:

TheoutreachofSukarya largelycoversDelhi,HaryanaandtosomeextentadjacentdistrictsofRajasthan.InHaryana,itsactivitiesaremainly covered Gurgaon and Mewat districts. However, for relief-workineventsofnaturalcalamities,ithasalsoworkedonlocationslike,JagatsinghpurandParadeepdistrictsofOrissaduringcyclonein1999,KhoruandMorvivillageofSundenagardistrictofGujaratduringearthquakein2001anddistrictofKanchipuramandPudhunadukuppaminTamilNaduduringTsunamiin2004.

1.3 Sukarya’s involvement in women related issues

Womenhavealwaysbeenthefocalpointofalltheactivitiesundertakenby Sukarya so far. The health-care programmes, which have beenthemainstayofSukarya’sactivities,havealwayskeptwomenastheprimary target. They are the main beneficiaries of the various health related interventions of Sukarya, such as, mobile health diagnosticclinic, anaemia detection, prevention and eradication campaign,health centres, physiotherapy unit, generalized and specializedmedicalcamps,healthmelas,andvaccinationdrives.

Understandingtheimportanceofeconomicindependence(self-reliance)ofwomentowardsthelargergoalofwomenempowerment,Sukaryahasinitiatedseveralprojectsofskilldevelopmentthroughvocationaltrainings(likebeauticiancourse,spicesprocessingetc.)forwomeninthevillagestoenablethemtoearnsomeincomeforthemselvesandtheirfamiliesbyusingtheirskills.

Theprogrammeofimpartinglifeskillsisexclusivelytargetingwomen,giventheirvulnerableposition in thesociety.Theobjectiveof thisprogrammeistodevelopunderstandingaboutselfandenvironment,

interpersonalskills,problemsolving,decisionmaking,handlingemotionsandstressmanagement(mentalhealth)amongwomen.Animportantcomponent of the package is education on ‘reproductive health’thatcoverstheissueslikesexualhealth,marriage,familyplanning,parenthoodandotherrelatedaspects.Sukaryaalsoundertookadvocacycampaignthroughthemediumofstreetplaytosensitizeparentsandlocalcommunitiesaboutwomen’srights,genderdiscriminationanditsconsequences.

EducatinggirlchildhasalsobeenfocusofSukarya’sinterventionineducation.IthasalsoassistedgovernmentinimplementingIntegratedChildDevelopmentServices(ICDS)inruralGurgaon,whereittargetsschool drop-out girls in the age groupof 11-18 years andattemptsto meet their nutrition, health, education, recreational and skilldevelopmentneeds.

Men as Partners in Improving the health Status of the Rural Communities (supported by Concern India Foundation and The Bird Group, Delhi)Under the community health program, Sukarya is implementing aproject inthemostbackwardandthedepriveddistrictofHaryana,Mewat.MewatisthelandoftheMeos,whohavetheirgenesisintheMeotribals,whoarebasicallyanagriculturebasedsociety.Theareahasadistinctethnicandsocio-culturaltract.Historically,theregionhashad

anextremelyturbulenthistoryandhasbeen subjected to repeated invasions.Thedestructionanddevastationoverthecenturieshasresulted inbackwardnessandgrossunderdevelopmentbothintheareaanditspeople.SukaryainitiateditsworkinMewatDistrictfromJune2008.

Our project objectives focus on malepartnershipandparticipationinimprovingthe overall health status of ruralcommunities. It has been seen that

Haryanahasamaledominatedsociety,wheremostofthedecisionsaretakenbymen.Involvingmeninhealth-speciallyreproductiveandsexualhealth-insuchsettingsiscomplicatedanddemandslong-termcommitment. Yet, the rewards can be profound. The potential benefits ofmale involvement includeexpanded rights forwomen, improvedfamilyhealth,bettercommunicationbetweenpartnersandinformedjointdecisionmakingwithinhouseholds.

This project aims to reach a population of 29000 in 13 villages ofTauroBlockofMewatDistrict.TheprojectissupportedbyTheBirdGroup,Delhi.Thethrustoftheprojectfocusesonhealtheducationandawareness.Malehealthgroupswillplayakeyroleandwillprovideplatformforhealtheducationto identifyhealth issuesandproblemsand to take actions at the ground level for seeking health productsandservices.Theprojectwillfacilitateeasy,accessibleandaffordablehealthproductsandservicestothecommunitythroughcamps,mobileclinics, provision of medicines and diagnostic facilities and mostimportantlyreferseriouscasestoprivateandgovernmenthospitals.Better health through Community based health centre (supported by Charities Aid Foundation and Incentive Destination)AnumberofprogramshavebeeninitiatedbypolicymakersinIndiasinceitsindependencetobringaboutpositivechangeinthehealthofthecitizensofIndia.Ahugeamountofmoneyhasbeenspenttoprovidequalityhealthservicestotheruralpopulationofthecountry.However,thereisstillalargeproportionofruralpopulationthatisdeprivedofit.Forinstance

Bandhwari, a village with a population of 5000, which falls on theGurgaon-Faridabadhighway,18kmsfromGurgaon,hasresidentswhowereentirelydependentonquacksforprimaryhealthservices.Therewasnoclinicordispensaryinthevillage.Eventhetransportfacilitiesin the village are very poor. Taking these facts into consideration,SukaryastartedasmallbutimportantjointventureinthevillagewiththesupportofCAFandIncentiveDestinations.

The goal of the Projectwas to increase awareness and improve intheoverallhealthofthegrampanchayatofBandhwari. Inordertoachievethegoalinaperfectmanner,weworkedwithawellplannedstrategy.AhealthcentrewasestablishedforthepeopleofBandhwari,with an M.B.B.S doctor and a medical dispenser, active five days in a week.Tostrengthencommunityparticipation,fourcommunityhealthworkerswereselectedfromthevillageitself.Thesehealthworkersplayed a vital role in bringing needy people to the health centreand in conducting the follow-up of these patients. To address theissuesrelatedtowomen’shealth,visitsbyafemalespecialistdoctorwerescheduledtwiceinamonth.Further,IECmaterialisalsobeingdevelopedtogenerateawarenessrelatedtohealthandsanitation.

Women empowerment by strengthening self help group and micro enterprise development (supported by Charities Aid Foundation and Godfrey Phillips India Limited)

Keeping the larger objectives of economic self-reliance of womeninview,intheyear2004,Sukaryaset-upaspicesprocessingcentreat its office in order to assist poor women in generating additional incomefortheirhousehold,byutilizingtheirskillsintheproductionof spices, pickles and chutney through traditional methods that

minimise the loss of nutritional value,aroma and taste. To upscale the initiativeto extend the benefits to a large number of poor women in its operational areas byorganisingtheminSelf-HelpGroups(SHGs),inJanuary2008,Sukaryalaunchedaprojecttitled “Empowerment of Rural WomenthroughSHGsandEntrepreneurshipBuilding”with the financial assistance from Godfrey Phillips India,NewDelhi. TheobjectiveoftheprojectwastoformandstrengthenSHGsbyinculcatinghabitofsavingsandenforcingcredit discipline and to provide vocationaltraining on spice making to the women members of SHGs to providethemanavenueofincomegeneration.ThetargetareaswereBandhwari,WaliawasandGwalpaharivillagesofGurgaondistrictinHaryana.

Women’s Income Generation Group - Spice Making Project (By Sukarya)Started in 2004, this is a modest steptowards assisting women of marginalizedcommunities in generating additionalincomeformeetingtheirhouseholdneeds,byutilizingtheirskillsintheproductionofunadulteratedspices,picklesandchutney.Sukaryaprovideswomenwithspace,capitalinvestment, and other required resourcesforgrinding freshspices (includingBesan,Dhania,Haldi,Chilly, Jira,Currypowder,

Garam Masala) and packaging them. They are given wages for theirlabour. The money received from the sale of the spices is used tokeep the Project running. The Project has benefited several women of WazirabadandKanhaivillages.ApartfromproductionofspiceswehavealsoexpandedourrangeofproductstoincludePapad,AcharandChutneysothatwecaninvolveandreachmorefamiliesthroughthiswork.

Improving Reach and Access of RCH and FP services with Quality of Care KIRAN (Knowledge based Intervention for Reproductive health Advocacy and actioN) in partnership with Population Foundation of India (PFI), Delhi

BackgroundMewatdistrictwascarvedoutfromerstwhileGurgaonandFaridabaddistricts, which came into existence on 4th April 2005 as the 20thdistrictofHaryana.Thenewlyconstituteddistrictcomprisesofthreesub-divisions namely Nuh, Firozpur Jhirka and Hathin. The districtheadquarter is located atNuh. Thedistrict comprises of six blocksnamely Nuh, Tauru, Nagina, Firozpur Jhirka, Punhana and Hathin.Thereare532villagesinthedistrict.

AccordingtotheCensusofIndia2001,thetotalpopulationofMewatdistrictis9,93,617.Majorityofthepopulation95.36%livesinruralareas.TheMale:FemalesexratioinMewatisonly894femalestoeach1000maleas against thenational averageof 927 femalesper l000males.InfantmortalityrateandmaternalmortalityrateinMewatisnotavailable,butconsideringthepoorhealthfacilities,largefamilysizeandtheadversesexratio,itcanbesafelyassumedthatitishigh.TheliteracyrateinMewatisappallinglylow,particularlyincaseoffemales.ForMuslimwomeninMewat,theliteracyrateranges1.76%

to2.13%,the lowest inthecountry.The literacyrate formenalsofallsbelowtheNationalaverageandranges27%to33%.

Area Selection and RationalTheselectionofMewatdistrictwasdonekeepinginmindthesocio-demographicallybackwarddistrictsinthecountrywhicharepriorityareasforimplementingtheReproductiveandChildhealthinterventions.Mewathasitsgenesisinitstribalinhabitants,theMeotribals.Meosis a Muslim dominated community with distinct ethnic and socio-culturalcharacteristics.Ithasalargefamilysizeof5-10membersperhousehold.Thefemaleshaveverypoorstatusinthefamily.Menarethedecisionmakersandposeagreatresistancetochange,especiallyhealthseekingbehaviour.Forselectionoftheinterventionblock,thesixblocksofMewatdistrictwererankedonthebasisofaCompositeIndexwhichincludedfourindicators:femaleliteracy,genderdisparityinliteracy,childsexratioandproportionofpopulation0-6years.TouruemergedasthemostbackwardblockwhereasNuhblock(ranked3rd)alsoemergedasaneedyarearelatedtoaccess of reproductive health services.Theselectionofthevillageswasdoneinconsultation with government officials.

The project is a joint initiative byPopulation Foundation of India andSukarya. It is being implemented across29 villages of Tauru (12 villages) andNuh(17villages)blockofMewatDistrictof Haryana, covering approx 70, 000population.Durationof theproject is 3years(2009–2012).

Reduction in the prevalence of Anemia – an important factor of maternal mortality and morbidity [supported by Population Foundation of India (PFI), Delhi]

Underthereproductivechildhealthprogram,Sukarya is implemented a pilot project toreduce the prevalence of anaemia amongpregnant women, lactating mothers andadolescents. The project reached 30000people in 10 villages of Gurgaon distict inHaryana. It was initiated in May 2006 anditsprojecteddurationwas for3years.Theproject focus primarily was on behaviorchange communication to effectivelymotivate the target group and high riskpeople. This was done by promotion ofknowledge,byencouraging theadoptionof

healthypracticesandtheprovisionofneeded health products and servicesat the community level for anaemiareduction.ThisprojectwassupportedbythePopulationFoundationofIndia,NewDelhi.

Promoting Rural Health by Health Promotion Camps (supported by Give India and The Bird Group)

Sukaryaimplementedaprojecttitled“DeliveringHealthServicesbyaMobileDiagnosticClinic”insixvillagesofthePataudiblockfromApril2007toMay, 2008. This was the first intervention where Sukarya has initiated themobileclinicservices intheruralareasofHaryana.Beforetheinterventionof theproject,meetingswere conductedwithDistrictcommissioner, District Development and Panchayat officer and Chief Medical Officer to seek their support and guidance for implementing thisproject.

It was a conscious decision taken by Sukarya towork in thePataudiBlock. It was the first mobile clinic intervention with Sukarya’s initiative, withoutanysupportfromdonors.AftervisitingthevillagesinPatuadiBlockandconductingafewgroupdiscussionswithstakeholders,sixvillageswereshortlistedfortheimplementationoftheproject.

SHOBHA - A step towards self reliance supported by Charities Aid Foundation and Godfrey Phillips India Limited, Delhi

Project Shobha was an extension of the“Saath Saath project” implemented bySukarya.Theobjectiveofthisprojectwasto enable the skill development of girlsandwomeninthevillagesbyprovidingavocationalbeauticiantrainingcourse.Thetrainingcoursewasbeingconductedinthevillage Ghata, of Gurgaon. The durationof the course was for 4 months and thetechnical skill was being provided by arecognized and experienced professionalof this field. The training aimed to build confidence and make them self-reliant.

SukaryaplanstoextendittotheothervillagesofGurgaonfortheskilldevelopmentofadolescentgirls.

Saath Saath Project (supported by Charities Aid Foundation & Godfrey Phillips India Limited, Delhi)ThisProjectaimedtoempowerandenhancethe overall status of adolescent girls andyoungwomen.Theobjectivewastoimpartlife skills through learning about self,environment, interpersonal skills, problemsolving, decision making and handling ofemotions and stress management (mentalhealth). “An important component of theProject was education on ‘reproductive

health’ and covered issues like sexual health, marriage, familyplanning, parenthood and related aspects. Sukarya recruited andtrained“peer”or“communityeducators”whospreadthemessagetothe larger community. In its first phase, the Project has benefited 300 adolescentgirlsfromTighra,GhataandSamaspurvillage.Kishori Shakti Yojna (supported by Sukarya)

SukaryawasgiventheopportunitytoassistIntegrated Child Development Services(ICDS) inruralGurgaonto implementtheschemesofGovernmentof India, in2004-06.TheProgramtargetsschooldrop-outgirls in theagegroupof11-18yearsandattempts tomeet theirnutrition,health,education, literacy, recreationaland skilldevelopmentneeds.WiththeassistanceoftheAnganwadiworkers,thefocalpointofICDSservicesandotherICDSfunctionaries,Sukarya was successful in catering toapproximately300adolescentnon-schoolgoinggirlsofvillagesTighraandGhata.

Pahalprojectprovideshealthservicestotheragpickers,migratoryworkers, rickshaw pullers, fruit/vegetable hawkers, domestic help,etc,thatconstitutethepopulationlivingintheSaraswatiKunjslums

inGurgaon,Haryana.Monthlyhealthcheckupofchildrenfocusesonhealthcheck up by doctor which includesgrowth monitoring of every child (height and weight), free distributionofmedicines,dewormingallchildren,follow up of the target children andtheir families and referring seriouscases to hospitals. Children are alsocounseled about personal health,hygieneandnutrition.

Comprehensive health camps are organized across the interventionareas,coveringpreventive,curativeandreferralservices.Thecampprovides free consultancy and check-ups by doctors, and also freemedicines.Thesecampsalsoservethepurposeofadvocatinghealthypractices throughworkshops,presentationsand informaldiscussions.Health education to women, school children and men on nutrition,personalhealthandhygiene,communitysanitation,safedeliveriesandimmunization by talk shows, documentary films, leaflets and pamphlet distributioninthecommunityarealsopartofthecamp.

Onetoonemeeting isconductedregularlythroughhouseholdvisitswith special focusonpregnant, lactatingmothers andadolescents.Thisprocessofindividualmeetingisaneffectivemethodofcreatinganunderstandingaboutthehealthissues,immunizationandgeneralawarenessaboutAnaemia.

Gurgaon has become a symbol of urbandevelopment during the last decade andhas led to an increase in the peri urbanregion.Peri-urban isoftenreferredtoasbeingtheruralfringeareasthatsurroundcities and that bear the brunt of urbanexpansion.SumsinGurgaonareuniformlycharacterized by inadequate provision ofbasic infrastructure and public servicesnecessarytosustainhealth,suchaswater,sanitation, and drainage. These people

have no financial resources to receive even basic health care facilities. “Betterhealth–better society“is theone linestatementofSukarya.So,inordertostrengthenitsstatement,theSukaryaSehatCentrewasinauguratedin2005inSukarya’spremisesatSushantlok.

Sincethen,theSehatCentrehasbeendoingexemplaryworkandiswellknownfor itsservicetopoorandneedypeople.Sukaryaisprovidingbasichealthcarefacilitiesthroughthesehatcentre,includingcheck-up,diagnosisandfreemedicine.Referralsarealsoprovidedforspecializedtreatmentasandwhenrequired.Theoccasionisalsousedforadvocacymeasuresandhenceinteractiveworkshops,informativepresentationsbydoctorsandarangeofsimplemessagesforbetterhealth.Individualcounselingofpeopleonone toonebasis isalsodoneabouthealthypractices,hygieneetc.Healthcardismaintainedforeachfamily.

Physiotherapy Unit – An Alternative Treatment (supported by Sukarya)

ThePhysiotherapyUnitwasstartedon15August,2005,andoperatesinthepremisesofSukarya.Theunitcatersto200patientsfromruralandurbanareaspermonthonaverage.Ithasbeenfunctioningsuccessfullyforthelastthreeyears.Theunitisopenfive days a week from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm.Wehaveawellmotivatedteamthatconsists of development professionals, aphysiotherapist,volunteersandasupportstaff who execute their tasks in an efficient manner.Weservealmost200patientsina

month.Weuseourorganization’svehicletobringmarginalizedpeopleintothephysiotherapycenter.OurmaintargetisthepeopleresidingintheslumsofGurgaon.Neemtala,Nalapur,SaraswatiKunj,Sector-56 and Phase – V are the chief beneficiaries. Our main focus is on thewomenwhoremainworkcontinuouslythroughthedaydomestichelp, at farms as labourers and at home.They suffer from variousproblemssuchasbackpain,cervicalandbodypain.Theignoranceoftheseproblemsmayleadtoseriousailmentssuchasadiscprolapseorspondylolisthesis.

Generalized and Specialized Medical Camps and Health MelaSukarya organizes comprehensive healthcarecampsandspecializedmedicalcampsinurbanslumsandruralvillagesinGurgaonregularlytohelpthepooraccessfreehealthcare services including medical check-up,diagnosis and referral services. Sukaryahas organized diabetes detection camp,heart care camps, mental health camps,eyecamp,multi-specialtytreatmentcampand health check up camps for pregnantand lactating women. These camps alsoserve the purpose of advocating healthypracticesthroughworkshops,presentations

andinformaldiscussions.ThecampsareconductedbydoctorsfromtheSouthDelhiMedicalAssociation.Sukaryacatersto500patientsonanaverageineachcamp.

For the year 2008-09, 10 General Health Camps and 10 follow-upcampswereheldinthefollowingvillages-Ghata,Tighra,Samaspur,Wazirabad,Kanhai,Silokhra,Sainikahera,Bandhwari,GwalpahariandWaliawas.Themainobjectiveofthehealthcampwastoprovidefreehealthcheckupforallmen,womenandchildrenandcateredto100patients on an average. The major health problems that emergedduringthecampswereoccurrenceofTyphoid,Diarrhoea,skindiseases,Anaemia,undernutrition,RespiratoryTractinfections,TuberculosisandReproductivetractinfections.

Cleanliness Drive (supported by Sukarya)

Sukarya initiatedacleanlinessdrive in theslumofDLFPhase-Vin2004.Theobjectivewas to educate and motivate the slumdwellers to keep their vicinity clean forpreventing recurrent outbreaks of diseaseslike malaria, cholera, TB , dengue. Weregularlyeducatetheslumdwellersontheimportanceandwaysofmaintaininghygieneandsanitation.

In 2006, under the Anaemia InterventionCampaign, street plays were performed inallthe10Projectvillagesbyatheatregroupfrom the NGO, Deepalaya. The mainobjective of the street play was to createawarenessonAnaemiaamongthecommunitywith a special focus on the target groupi.e.thepregnantwomen,lactatingmothersandtheadolescentgirls.

In2008Sukaryaundertookanadvocacycampaignthroughthemediumofstreetplaytitled‘HamariBitiya’tosensitizeparentsandcommunityaboutwomen’srights,genderdiscriminationanditsconsequences.Animpactassessmentwasundertakenthroughanotherplaycalled“AajKiAdalat”toassesschangesinperception,knowledgeandattitudeofthecommunityelders.

In the year 2008-09 Sukarya produced a film Jab Jago Tab Savera under theadvocacycampaignfor“TheReductionintheprevalenceofAnaemia–AnimportantfactorofMaternalmortalityandmorbidity”,facilitatedthebroadcastof themessage for the reductionofAnaemia inmanydistrictsofHaryanathrough92.7FMChannel.SukaryaalsopublishedanumberofIECmaterialsoutwhich“PrabhavshaliVyanjanVidhian”-Ironrichrecipebookwaspopularandwellacceptedbythecommunity.
