UK Day celebrates royal babyDuring UK Day, which happened to be the prince’s birth, residents wore red, white, and blue as they enjoyed the musical duo Britz, which honored 50 years of British Rock & Roll. To start the show, performers Howard and Sheelagh Roberts sang “Hip hip hooray. The royal baby is born today”. The song was followed by the crowd giving three cheers!

Local media also covered the event. Check out the video on the Touchmark Facebook page.

In the recent past, residents have celebrated the Royal Wedding and Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee. This year—a Royal Baby Shower.

Before Prince George was born, residents guessed the name and signed and sent a card and lovely Canada pin to the royal family.

It’s gold!

The Touchmark Drama & Glee clubs joined together to celebrate the return of Edmonton Klondike K Days!

They performed a Klondike Melodrama to a sold-out crowd, who sighed, cheered, booed, and tossed popcorn at the performers, which was all welcomed and encouraged.

The show was so popular that two encore performances will be held during Active Aging Week.

“I have not laughed that hard in years,” says Glee Club member Pearl Warshwaski.

Other K Days events included a panning for gold demonstration by Touchmark manager and gold miner Glen Anderson. Glen invited anyone interested to join him for a trip to the North Saskatchewan River for a picnic and day of panning for gold. He shared that a university study showed the Alberta riverbanks have the most concentrated gold.

Friday evening fun included entertainment by Klondike Colleen (Lazoruk).

Eat less. Eat better. Move more. “Unhealthy diets and a lack of physical activity in the US cause more health loss than smoking, alcohol, or drug use.”

– Ali Mokdad, PhD, director of Middle Eastern Initiatives and professor of Global Health at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME)

The United States has made significant health improvements over the last two decades, including:

• Lower disease burden rates since 1990 of nearly all childhood conditions and diseases

• Lower mortality rates for people at every age since 1990

• Significant reduction in death and disability from HIV/AIDS

But Canada and other countries in Europe and Asia are improving at a faster rate.

Why is the US less healthy than other countries? The researchers point to poor dietary practices and inadequate physical activity as two of the driving forces. In fact, dietary risks moved ahead of smoking as the leading cause of disability and death in the study released recently in the American Journal of Medicine.

Christopher Murray, MD, DPhil, is a professor of Global Health at the University of Washington and director of the IHME. He presented the findings of the study at an event hosted by First Lady

Michelle Obama as part of her Let’s Move! campaign.

Bad choices and risky behaviors fall in the category of “lifestyle-related risk factors”. Genetics are important but not as important as lifestyle practices. Touchmark recognizes the importance of providing healthy lifestyle options in its 11 communities in the US and Canada.
