TOUCHMARK AT HARWOOD GROVES THE{FULL} LIFE August 2014 Chefs compete in cook-off Touchmark Executive Chef Joe Volske and Sous Chef Elijah Waller went head-to-head in a competitive cook-off. Each chef made an entrée, one side dish, and a dessert using mystery ingredients that included one vegetable, one fruit, one spice, and one “wild card” ingredient. Only 30 minutes before the competition did the chefs learn the mystery ingredients—jicama, kiwi, cilantro, and gluten- free animal crackers! Residents Betsy Fowler, Yvonne Green, and Don Hogenson judged the dishes on a scale of one to five for Execution (technique/presentation), Formulation (ingredients/recipe), Interpretation (creativity/use of mystery items), and Taste. Two iMPACT{FUll} fruits to add to your diet Did you know that kiwis are full of fiber, antioxidants, and have more vitamin C than a whole orange? Fiber is one of the main components for colon health, and Vitamin C is helpful in boosting the immune system. Another winner: peaches! Packed with beta carotene, lycopene, and lutein, this delicious fruit contributes to eye health. These vitamins and minerals also help prevent macular degeneration and improve vision health by increasing circulation. Try these easy, refreshing summer recipes:

Kickin‘ Kiwi Kooler

4 kiwis, skinned and chopped 1 cup guava nectar 1 tablespoon of frozen limeade 1 (6 ounce) container of low-fat vanilla yogurt 1 cup of ice

Pour ingredients in blender. Mix on high until smooth. Pour in a cup, and enjoy!

Peach Cooler

2 cups of low-fat milk 2 cups of sliced peaches ½ tsp of lemon juice

Place ingredients in blender; mix on high until smooth. Pour in cup, and sprinkle with nutmeg.

Adele Swenson hosted the second Taco in a Bag Party with family, friends, residents, and staff. She supplied everything from the tacos to s’mores. Her family helped host and serve food.

Our environment, and how we feel about it, can have a huge impact on the way we feel. For many, the first areas that come to mind when we think of environmental wellness are things like reducing and conserving energy or reusing and recycling practices. These areas should be important to all of us, and they are areas of focus for Touchmark communities.

Another area to consider is the

impact and benefits that house plants have on the environment and our wellness. Research at Kansas State University (2006, Park, Seong-Hyun) on indoor plants identified several therapeutic benefits, including reduced stress, lower heart rates and blood pressure, decreased pain medication, and less fatigue and anxiety. Indoor plants also add color and brighten mood, moisturize and purify the air, and sharpen focus and attention.

Some Touchmark communities have outdoor gardens, which are also beneficial for your body and soul. Gardening is considered a moderate to intense form of exercise and uses all three types

of recommended activities—endurance, flexibility, and strength. Gardening also provides people with a sense of personal well-being through stress relief, education, and the creation of friendships.

Indoors and outdoors, plants offer many benefits. Do you have a green thumb? Would you consider teaching others how to have a green thumb? Share your thoughts and ideas with your community’s Life Enrichment/Wellness team. Help us enhance environmental wellness; consider adding indoor plants to your home environment. If you are interested in a list of safe plants, send me an email at [email protected].

RESOURCE{FUll} – The benefits of growing green

A mini beverage series covered three drinks: coffee, wine, and smoothies. Life Enrichment/Wellness Director Anne-Marie Fitz (pictured) shared three coffee brewing techniques, including cold brew, French press, and standard egg coffee. A representative from Maple River Winery talked about the process of winemaking. Jamie, from Courts Plus, shared the health benefits of smoothies. Residents sipped smoothies and received recipes. The summer tradition of

picnics has begun. First stop: Lindenwood Park.

Residents kicked off the local baseball season with an evening RedHawks game.

Off to Detroit Lakes! This perfect day started with lunch at Zorbaz and finished with pie at Perkins. Everyone caught one fish, some up to eight!
