Townships Reads
By Barbara Lavoie
Reading during the holidays is oneof the best ways to relax after thebusyness of preparing for what is
usually a full month of festivities.Townships’ Top Five Reads
You’ve heard of CBC Reads, here’sTownships Reads. Sorry none of theglamour of choosing a panel of experts, etc., but an excellent list nonetheless. You might want to add them all to yourwish list.
In the interest of having somethingon hand and ready for those momentswhen we can pick up a book or for thosewell-deserved days of rest betweenChristmas and New Year’s, The Recordasked Townships Expressions’ businessmanager Cathy Turner to share her topfive books of the year with us.
1. Irish Settlement and NationalIdentity in the Lower St. Francis Valley
by Peter Southam This book describes 200 years of Irish
presence in the Lower St. Francis Valley,a section of Quebec’s Eastern Townshipsthat surrounds the Town of Richmond.
Local families provided much of the in-formation in the book. Part I deals withIrish rural settlements; Part II focuses onthe Richmond’s St. Patrick’s Society.
2. Weaverworld by Julia RohanIn this children’s book, Rohan spins
an exciting tale about Jack Fisher, a boyin trouble. Jack finds himself trans-ported to Weaverworld, a mystical placein which the longer he’s there the morewilling he is to let go of the rules of lifein the Realworld. Many of the elemen-tary schools in the area have been partof a series of presentations based on thebook.
3. You’re Not To Eat That, Are You?by Ross Murray
Just the title makes you grin. Thebook is a collection of Ross Murray’sfinest humour from 1992 to 2007. Basedon his own family life, these unusualsnapshots of life offer a perspective thatis at once both refreshing and wise.
4. Four Seasons of the Eastern Town-ships by Paul Laramée and Marie-José
Auclair This beautiful book contains more
than 300 colour photographs of the East-
ern Townships. The accompanying textdescribes the area’s history, geography, architecture and sporting activities. Amust-have for natives, visitors and ex-pats, and it makes a beautiful gift fromthe Townships.
5. Eeyou Istchee: Land of theCree/Terre des Cris by Louise Abbott
and Niels JensenIn a book review by Matthew Farfan,
published in The Record in 2010, he de-scribed the book, now in its secondprinting, as “a remarkable photographicjourney into the territory of the Cree ofnorthern Quebec. There are stunningviews in this book, and the authors havedone an excellent job selecting, re-searching and presenting the material.
“These are just my top five, there aremany more excellent books, all by thetalented Townshippers,” added Turner.“I only have a small percentage of it inExpressions.”
Mae Sot Educational FoundationTurner also discussed another popu-
lar children’s book written by Town-shipper Annik Williams of Stanstead –Mr. Mole’s Day Off with Good Night Lit-
tle Birdie. All the proceeds from the saleof this book go to The Eastern Townships- Mae Sot Education Foundation, thejoint Champlain – Lennoxville andBishop’s University project. Champlainstudent volunteers Burmese migrantsand refugees living on the Thai-Burmeseborder improve their quality of life, andBishop’s volunteers provide ESL enrich-ment to schools for migrant children inMae Sot, Thailand.

Townships Expressions, the one-stopshopping service for books, musicrecordings and graphic arts items suchas prints, notepaper and greeting cards, and calendars, was started a number ofyears ago by Townshippers’ Associationwith financial assistance from CanadianHeritage, to support and promote the ex-ceptional talent of the area’s many an-glophone artists, photographers, andmusicians.
