Giving back to the women’s community

Giving back to the women’s community is just oneof the benefits of shopping at Boutique Encore.

Advertised as “the new shopping alternative inLennoxville,” a visit to this shop is just like visiting anyother women’s clothing store, but with twist.

The alternative part comes with where they gettheir goods and what they do with the profit.

Proceeds from the Lennoxville & District Women’sCentre’s highly successful retail store located at 178Queen Street are reinvested in the community inwhat’s known as a social enterprise.

How do they do that, you ask? Easy. All the high-quality, gently used clothing sold at Boutique Encore isdonated. It’s all a good thing to do these days, to re-useand re-cycle, so that others benefit from what you areno longer using, and we reduce waste at the same time.

As their inviting ad for volunteers reads, they are al-ways seeking personable, cheerful women who believein their mission, care about the community and likefashion, to help at Boutique Encore.

For more information, contact Boutique Encore andthe Lennoxville & District Women’s Centre by tele-phone at 819-564-6626, or visit the store’s website bou-tiqueencore.ca/ and the centre at http://ldwc.ca/.

Coatic’ArtThis boutique brings together the exceptional tal-

ents of two women in downtown Coaticook. After developing a friendship as artists in a small

town for a number of years, and working together to es-

tablish Coatic’Art, a consortium of Coaticook Valleyartists.

Connie Marcoux and Rosa Aquirre, as they say, tookthe plunge together, and rented a shared space at 107-109 Child Avenue, a funky side-street off the beatenpath, but still near the town hall.

The shop has separate storefronts for display, ChezKoni Galerie/Atelier d’Art, and Créations Rosy Bijoux, yet they can share the space at the rear of the store tohold workshops.

Marcoux, originally from the Philippines but a Coat-icook resident for many years, earned a fine arts de-gree at the Santo Tomas University in Manila.

Besides the painting she currently produces, herlong and successful career has included working inpublicity, and in the design and production of postersand magazine layouts. In Asia, Europe and North Amer-ica, she worked as the art director for several interna-tional advertising agencies.

Aquirre is an El Salvador native, but she alsohas been a Townshipper for a number of years.A teacher before she immigrated to Quebec, sheworked for a short time with bonsai trees man-ufactured with beads and copper wire.

When she took one of the decorativebranches and began twisting it, Aquirre real-ized it could be made into attractive jewelry. She had found what she’d been looking for, anoutlet for her desire to create. And so the rest ishistory.

These friendly women take plenty of time tohelp you find exactly what you are looking for.Marcoux excels at custom painting projects;Aquirre enjoys holding workshops to teach chil-dren and adults the art ofmaking intricate jewelleryand doing beading.

You’ll find their sharedFacebook site by searchingfor either “Koni” or“Rosy,” for a glimpse attheir work in photos, andnews of upcoming exhibi-tions and workshops.

Aquirre also has herown website at www.cre-

ationsrosy.com/.For more information, contact Chez Koni/Créations
