It’s no surprise that we’ve been stressing on the fact that India is among the richest countries in the world and one of the leading horses when it comes to economic growth and increasing global presence.

However unlike it’s fellow countries that are also a part of this race it also boasts of including in its population the largest number of poor people in the world, more than any other country.

In a land of such diversity, another fact that we’ve been stressing on is that India is the third most obese nation in the world. But is obesity a problem for both the rich and poor folk? A new study tells us otherwise.

Almost all of the weight gains recorded in the developing countries is by the rich, who keep adding the gravy to their plates and taking that second helping of dessert while the beggars outside the party don’t even get a bite.

Yeah, the condition in India is no different. The heavy get heavier and the poor stay at dangerously low levels and border on malnourishment.

The study was conducted by Dr. Fahad Razak of the University of Toronto, and showed that the rich are making steady weight gains while the poor are not benefiting from the economic growth of the country and were conveniently left behind.

A rich man gains 2.5 times the weight as compared to his poorer compatriot. Sad isn’t it? Leave India; let’s take Bangladesh as an example.

Over a decade the average weight of the country went up considerably, yet 30% of the population continued to remain underweight and malnourished.

‘A rising tide does not lift all the boats in the ocean’ said Mr. Razak and rightfully so!

Income inequality has been paralleled with weight inequality. The rise of middle classes in the developing countries such as our own is one of the primary reasons for this.

Sedentary lifestyles of the middle and upper classes don’t require much physical exercise. Desk jobs are the most common nowadays where you just sit in front of computer screens and type away.

That definitely isn’t going to help burn the burgers and soda you’re gulping while working. Besides this, the increase in incomes and cheap availability of processed foods thanks to intense competition and globalisation has led to this insane dependence on these foods that are fattening but tasty.

Would you sacrifice a bar of chocolate for let’s say a paratha or jam and chapatti? Maybe ten years ago but today that isn’t even a question.

Snacking away, sitting in one place, the rich are protected by their tinted glasses and air conditioners to comfort them while the poor physically clean the glasses and bring them hand cooked food.

The inequalities need to be abolished first in order for balance to be restored, or the rich will continue to get fatter and buy a new pair of jeans every other week, while the poor wait eagerly for the worn out jeans the rich would throw their way once they no longer have use for them.
