Just like 2nd & Charles. We all know things have changed over the past few years. Big, shiny, and new are out. So is conspicuous consumption. Recycling is important to all of us — and not just when it comes to plastic bottles and aluminum cans. People want to spend less, live with less, and get more out of what they already have.

So we gave them what they wanted. A place to sell the things they have. A place to find something cool and different (and usually cheap!) every time they come in. A place where they can browse, hang out and experience the ever-changing continuum of people recycling great stuff.

Trust us, we realize we didn’t invent the concept of the used bookstore. But just like the stuff in our stores, we just took something well-loved and breathed new life into it.

Guess what? It worked.

At 2nd & Charles, we don’t like to think of things as old or used. We prefer words like experienced, established, well-loved and proven. For example, our sister company, Books-A-Million. It’s been around for a while — since 1917 to be exact — but it’s by no means outdated or behind the times. In fact, it’s the largest book retailer in the Southeast and the second largest in the country. It’s on the move, opening new locations, offering the latest technology, and meeting the new demands of the fluid marketplace.

We opened our first store in Hoover, Alabama in 2010. And in just three short years, we’ve opened an additional eight stores. Sure, that’s impressive. But even more important than the pace of our growth has been the thought we put into it. We carefully researched the markets. We looked for a very specific demographic — the precise mix of customers who would understand our concept, embrace it and actively participate in it.

I’ve been seeing and hearing about this place for a while now. At first, I had no idea what this enormous store was. It was hard to believe it was just books/movies/dvds etc. I assumed there would also be some other random knick-knacks (which there are!). I finally had the chance to explore this store yesterday. My friends were right—this is definitely not a store you can easily pop into for JUST 10 minutes. Again, this place is HUGE! I love just browsing through book stores, and I like this one even better because the books are way cheaper! The conditions of the books vary, and the prices for the same titles will also vary slightly. Most of the books were in pretty good condition, and honestly, many of them looked just new! They also have brand new copies of some books, but you’re also paying the price for a brand new book.

I filled up my basket with way too many things and ended up giving myself a $10 limit. I bought a 1000 piece puzzle (NEW!) for only $3! I also got a copy of Wuthering Heights for a dollar and then an Ellen Degeneres book for less than $5. Pretty good if I do say so myself : )

When I was leaving the store, I noticed a couple bins outside next to a large sign that said FREE. There were just a few random books, but I found one that caught my eye. Not bad for FREE!. Also, I saw a lady just dropping off some books in the bin, I guess it’s a place to just pay-it-forward in terms of books if you don’t care about selling the books to the store.

I’ll definitely be back! So much exploring to do and a great place to shop to build my library!

If you have never been to a 2nd & Charles, and you are into vintage / thrift stuff, you should definitely check it out. While this is a chain store, and I believe is part of the Books-A-Million enterprise, it still has a local feel to it. You really never know what you may find here.
