You will probably hear a lot of people say that when you look for an online business you should choose a niche that is profitable.

If it is profitable then it probably has a lot of competition.

So the question is- should you choose a niche with a lot of competition?

I think the idea about competition online and competition in various niches has brought a little bit of confusion when talking about competition and search engine rankings.

If you rely solely on search engine optimisation to drive traffic to your website then you are aware that a lot of competition makes it very difficult for you to rank in the search engines.

Therefore this has created the illusion that competition is bad.

However, competition is actually a good thing.

If there is a lot of competition in your particular niche it means that your niche is likely to be extremely profitable and that there is a high demand and a lot of customers.

If your online business is creating information products then competition is a good thing.

We all prefer different styles and are able to learn more effectively from all kinds of people.

I might prefer one person's style of training whereas you might prefer another.

When there is a lot of competition and high demand it means that customers are wanting and looking for something specific that is going to match with their own personality and preferences.

If you write a book on a particular subject, even if the content itself is very similar to another book, the style in which you write it will be different and will appeal to different people.

If you create audio training programs then your style will be completely different to someone else's.

It will in fact be unique to you and of course no one can compete with that.

So if there is a lot of competition in your particular niche and you are creating information products then how do you make sure that you stand out?

You need to make people aware of the benefit's of your particular products and identify what is unique about your style that will be helpful to specific targeted people.

Once you fully understand what your benefits are, you will be able to market what you offer far more effectively and you will be able to go exactly where your ideal customers will be.

You don't need to rely on search engine traffic you can go to the websites that your customers are already active on and make your ideal solution visible to them.

Forums, discussion groups, question and answer sites, high traffic blogs - these are all places that you can go online to get visibility to your ideal offer.
