Most elderly people, find completing even the daily tasks of bathing and cooking difficult to complete, and this does affect their sense of independence. These are the aged who will benefit from the daily attendance of a social worker or nurse, who can help them out with their daily routines.

People who undertake such work are those who are trained in the care of the elderly, and have even some education on the administering of medications, that a majority of the elderly does require. Engaging their services helps the other family care givers to have a peace of mind.

Many elderly people do initially live by themselves in houses that they have bought and paid for during their working careers and are therefore not very comfortable when they have to move in with other members, even though they are of their own family.

As an alternative, you can also arrange for the aged care services that can come from retirement villages, which are increasingly being set up for the care of the elderly. These homes are fully equipped to provide all the services that people need.

Looking after the elderly in their own homes is the most preferable as then they are in environments that they are familiar with and will not resent the daily attendance of aged care givers. Most aged people are more concerned about the care and love they get, rather than their own comfort.

Shifting them to old age homes can lead to a permanent solution, but it rarely leads to happiness and quite often leaves family members with a sense of guilt at abandoning what they consider is their duty. Any such admission to a home must be done only after obtaining the full consent of the elderly.
