How effective is the combination of your main product and your ancillary tasks?

In the research stage of my coursework I discovered that each artist in the music industry obtain a particular style which is highlighted through their media products e.g. their music videos and also the various other products they release to promote themselves including; albums, merchandise and billboard posters. This style is portrayed through their distinctive star image which is unique through every artist and usually relating to their chosen genre. This makes them more recognisable to their audience and it’s what makes their star image personal and exclusive. As an artist’s products link together it makes their products more professional and sticks to the conventions of real media products.

My media products!

In relation to my media products I intended to follow these conventions and ideas to attract my intended target audience which will be achieved by ensuring that my digi pak, poster advertisement and music video have recognisable continuity which will be expressed through the colour scheme, font, images etc.

FontsUsually pop artists have a unique style of font ,personal to them only which features on all of their products. I believe that I have achieved this by using the same font for the artists name Lola and her album font which features throughout all of my media products including the digi pak, poster advertisement and music video. An example of this in other pop artists is Jessie J. By having the same style font it enables the artist to become more observable in the music industry making their star image more popular. This is something which I would like to have in my media products so the consumer would be able to visibly identify who the artist is instantly. The way the font is structured on the covers is in a big font which would stand out and be noticeable towards my audience.

Colour schemeThroughout all of my media products I have made sure that the colour scheme is continuous throughout all three of the products. I want my products to flow continuously to keep it in a professional manner and to follow the conventions of real media products. It is evident throughout my products that I have chosen a light pastel colour scheme. This is through the use of light pinks, light blues and purples. For example I used a light pastel blue colour for the artists name ‘Lola’ this colour would be noticeable towards the audience as its part of her star image and individual persona. I also used a light pastel purple colour for the name of the album which features throughout the digi pak, and poster advertisement. This shows the continuity of my ancillary tasks, showing I have kept to the correct colour scheme to reach my target consumer. I intended to use these colours to reach my target audience of young teenage girls as these colours are commonly associated with girls at a young age especially with an interest in Pop music. The colours which I have chosen connote a sweet, light, innocent persona which would allow the audience to aspire too.

My ancillary tasks including both my digi pak and poster advertisements defiantly show its continuity through the use of the light pink colour used for the background. I chose to use a pink textured colour with a gradient effect of different shades of pink. I thought that this colour was suitable as it is a feminine and would reach my intended target audience of young teenage girls.

I thought that the colour scheme was not only important for the font and the colours used throughout my digi pak but also through the mise en scene of my music video. I created a mood board in the planning stage of my ancillary tasks which included clothing, make up, props hair styles and a colour palette which consisted of various pastel shades. I think it was important that I created this mood board as I was able to refer to it whilst in the process of creating my music video and ancillary tasks. I also referred to my target audience mood board which I created in the planning stage which also helped me develop the my chosen colours and the interests which they enjoy which I could adapt onto my media products.

Through the mise en scene it reflects the colour scheme which I have used throughout both my ancillary tasks and music video. Most of the outfits which my artist wore associated with the colour scheme. For example in the chorus she wore a light pink pastel top with natural make up and also in her living room where she received a text from her boyfriend she wore a light yellow baggy top. Here, I am meeting the conventions of existing pop music videos and at the same time attracting my target audience as they would wear a similar style of clothing and colours.

CHALLENGES!

However, I do feel as if I have challenged the use of my colour scheme in part of my music video where it shows a flashback of the two actors happy in their relationship. The colours associated with this scene are not light pastel colours which I have continuously used throughout my ancillary tasks but instead a black and white effect to signify the sadness and sorrow of the memory. I did this purposely to show the effectiveness of the relationship and how it changes enhancing the narrative of my music video.

IconographyI believe that I have used iconography quite effectively throughout my music video and ancillary tasks. In reference to props, I used balloons as props in the ancillary task photo shoot (picture) which I decided to use as the main image for my poster advertisement and digi pak. However, these balloons do not appear in any scene of my music video this shows the effectiveness of my ancillary tasks to make the audience intrigued so they are able to question why there balloons feature on the digi pak and poster advertisement but not in the music video. This could show the artists personality as being fun and sweet but some may be able to answer what the symbolism of the balloons are. They are associated to one of the songs in the album ‘the only way is up’.

The balloons overall symbolise that the artist is free now that she has broken up with her boyfriend and she is now free to be able to go anywhere in her life without being prevented by her boyfriend.

TypographyI believe that the written text which I have used on throughout my digi pak especially show the combination between my main product and my ancillary tasks. On the back cover of my digi pak I have included the song list of the songs which feature in the album. The songs which I have chosen reflect the concept of the music video being based around love, relationships and boys. This shows the combination between the two as the audience would be able to grasp the meaning and message from the album.

Camera shotsI have used a number of different camera shots throughout my music video and ancillary tasks including close up shots, medium close up short and long shots. I have focused more on medium close up shots of the artist looking directly into the camera because I think that this is the best way that the artist can connect to the audience and also how the audience can focus on the artist whilst she is singing expressing her true strong emotions.

I also believe that through mode of address the audience are able to enhance their feelings towards the artists. An example of this is in the chorus of the music video in how all you see is the artist with a plain white back drop. This would mean the audience would not be distracted by anything else and would only be focusing on the artist singing.

Directly looking into the camera

I have showed the combination of my ancillary tasks and my music video through the images used on the inside cover. I have used four different images on my inside cover which show the artist ‘Lola’ pulling different facial expressions highlighting her enjoyable bubbly personality. These photos were taken by the artist standing in front of a plain white back drop. Here, this shows the combination of my ancillary task and music video as it shows the similarity of ideas through the use of the white back drop in the photos used on the inside cover and the white plain back drop used in the chorus scene of my music video. This accentuates the fact that I am able to link my two products together.

I believe that I have showed continuity efficiently throughout my ancillary task products. For example using the social media sites logo ‘Twitter’ and ‘Facebook on both my poster advertisement and on the back cover of my digipak. These will show the audience other media platforms where they can find out about the artist.

Overall I do believe that the combination of my ancillary tasks and my media products are effective and I have targeted my intended audience efficiently.
