Summary: This article is about Steven Gerrard’s rise to fame in football and his best football moments. The article describes the build up of his career moments and the quotes to go with it. One thing you can learn from the article is Gerrard’spersonality, you can reflect from his point of view and from a fan point of view reminisce. The article is also biased towards Steven as it writes about his best assets and how his goals etc have played the biggest part in his rise to fame.

Quotes• “Lifting the Champions League trophy above my head as the captain of my team, its something that lives with you forever. It

was the proudest day I’ve ever had in a football shirt by a mile.” (Steven Gerrard, article by James Pearce. Appeared on www.liverpoolecho.co.uk July 30th 2013.)

• “Stevie’s one strength is he has no weakness. Football is a team game, but special players do special things at special times, and that is Steven Gerrard.” (Jamie Carragher, article by James Pearce. Appeared on www.liverpoolecho.co.uk July 30th

2013.)

• Gerrard has always been the man for the big occasion. He remains the only player to have scored in the final of the European Cup, UEFA Cup, FA Cup and League Cup. In 630 appearances, the Reds’ talisman has plundered 159 goals. (James Pearce, article by James Pearce. Appeared on www.liverpoolecho.co.uk July 30th 2013.)

• “It all happened so quick, a couple of weeks before Gerard asked me and Stephen Wright to train with the first team for good and we moved to Melwood. It was also just unreal.” (Steven Gerrard, article by James Pearce. Appeared on www.liverpoolecho.co.uk July 30th 2013.)

• “He was a bit of a father figure to me, Gerrard said. He took a big interest in me on and off the pitch. He made sure I was eating the right food and I wasn’t going out to nightclubs. He helped me to remain focused on my football. To work with a coach of his quality at such a young age certainly brought me on as a player.” (Steven Gerrard, article by James Pearce. Appeared on www.liverpoolecho.co.uk July 30th 2013.)

• During the Treble-winning season of 2000/01 he shone brilliantly, netting in the dramatic UEFA Cup triumph over Alaves, having already helped secure both the League Cup and FA Cup. He was named PFA Young Player of the Year. (James Pearce, article by James Pearce. Appeared on www.liverpoolecho.co.uk July 30th 2013.)

Further Research:For further research into Steven Gerrard, I would look at the Champions League trophy he won and look at the surrounding articles regarding that. I would also look at his early days as a player and see if there is a book on his development. Wikipedia is also a good place to start as it references recent documentaries and the books he has appeared in. As Gerrard’s team mate has featured in the article I could also research more into him and look at further quotes that are different and associated with this article.

Summary:This article depicts the evidence of a court case regarding a brawl involving Steven Gerrard. The article also goes into the court case and describes the defense as well as the Jury, it uses emotive language and also some bad language as it is revealing all the detail of what happened. There are detailed quotes, the quotes are the ones which hold the most information and you can see both sides to the argument. The article also was from 2009 and is fairly old.

Quotes• “He was on his way forward to me and his behavior had changed from when I was having a discussion with him. I didn’t

know why.” (Steven Gerrard, article by Helen Carter. Appeared on www.theguardian.com Thursday 23rd July 2009.)

• “I am certainly mistaken in thinking he was coming towards me to throw punches at me. Now I know, obviously, he had been struck, reacted and thought the strike was by me and he came into me and that’s when I reacted.” (Steven Gerrard, article by Helen Carter. Appeared on www.theguardian.com Thursday 23rd July 2009.)

• He had been drinking at the Lounge Inn in Southport to celebrate a 5-1 victory over Newcastle earlier that day. The footballer had been drinking Budweiser and a sweet liqueur drink called a Jammy Donut shot. (Helen Carter, article by Helen Carter. Appeared on www.theguardian.com Thursday 23rd July 2009.)

• The England international told Liverpool crown court that he had punched Marcus Mcgee three times during a clash at a bar in Southport. (Helen Carter, article by Helen Carter. Appeared on www.theguardian.com Thursday 23rd July 2009.)

Further research:For further research on this story I could look at what happened after the court case and how the quotes differ. I could also see how this affected his performance and if any court cases have been similar to this one since. Into further research with this article I could look at autobiographies he has written that have strained about this incident and once again if there has been any previous offences.

Summary:The summary of this article is that after speculation, Steven Gerrard will be offered a new contract to stay at Liverpool. He could leave if the offer isn’t good enough. This article is different to the other two because it is more formal and discusses his football rather than his talents or the offences in court. It also has less quotes and is informative and factual.

Quotes• The 34 year old indicated in an interview last week that he could leave Anfield to continue his playing career elsewhere if the

Reds did not offer him a new deal. (Mike Whalley, article written by Mike Whalley. Appeared on www.espnfc.com on 10th

November 2014.)

• Rodgers said he believed Gerrard still had plenty to offer as a player at Anfield and that plans for a contract extension were not driven by sentiment. (Brendan Rodgers/Mike Whalley. Article written by Mike Whalley. Appeared on www.espnfc.comon 10th November 2014.)

• “It’s certainly not sentimental. As a manager, you can’t afford to do that,” he told the Liverpool Echo. “I just look at his contribution in the two-and-a-half years I’ve been here.” (Brendan Rodgers. Article written by Mike Whalley. Appeared on www.espn.com on 10th November 2014.)

• And it is expected that Gerrard, who retired from the international game in July in an attempt to prolong his club career, will be offered a one year extension, which would commit him to the Reds until June 2016. (Mike Whalley. Article written by Mike Whalley. Appeared on www.espnfc.com on 10th November 2014.)

• “When I came in from Swansea in June 2012, Steven was 32, had struggled with injury, hadn’t played consistently over a number of years and I came in and sold him the idea, the philosophy of how we wanted to work and his importance.” (Brendan Rodgers. Article by Mike Whalley. Appeared on www.espnfc.com on 10th November 2014.)

Further research:For further research I could look at who Steven’s representatives are and if they have failed or succeeded in the past. I could also look at Gerrard’s current deal and see what it entails. I could also look at why the new contract would be important to Gerrard and the fans and look at the statistics of how long he has been at the club and what personal contracts have broken down before under the different managers.

Quotes

• Link to article - http://www.thisisanfield.com/2014/10/steven-gerrard-shouldnt-play-number-10-role/

• “Gerrard playing much higher up the field since Lucas came on alongside Henderson…..just like the old days at Anfield.” (John Bradley, article written by Ben Twelves. Appeared on www.thisisanfield.com Wednesday 8th October 2014.)

• “If I thought it would help the team I could do that. You could see his quality and his ability to combine with Balotelli straight away.” (Brendan Rodgers, article written by Ben Twelves. Appeared on www.thisisanfield.com Wednesday 8th October 2014.)

• “The only way Gerrard could/should play as No.10 is as a bit-part player ala Lampard last two seasons.” (Matt Ladson, article by Ben Twelves. Appeared on www.thisisanfield.com Wednesday 8th October 2014.)

• Steven Gerrard at the age of 34 lacks these characteristics. The Captain’s vision, passion and one touch game is very much still alive as displayed in the impressive 15 minute cameo, but it’s important to remember that’s all it was. (Ben Twelves, article by Ben Twelves. Appeared on www.thisisanfield.com Wednesday 8th October 2014.)

• Gerrard certainly has the technique, vision and passing required – as displayed late on in the second half- but in a tighter area where it’s more restricted and even more quickly shut down, it would be a move that’s come unstuck, as it has done in the deeper role at times too. (Ben Twelves, article written by Ben Twelve. Appeared on www.thisisanfield.com Wednesday 8th October)

Further research:For further research I could look at the other side of the debate as then I could get a second opinion and gather more useful quotes to show it is unbiased. I could also look at who the quotes are by and what their role is e.g. in the media. This further research is similar to the other articles regarding statistics and looking more in depth at the sources of the quotes.

Although his speech is personal, it is also factual to learn and see the different places within the stadium. Gerrard is not a big talker and doesn’t elaborate on some things which can become boring when watching the video.

Further Research:For further research from this video, Gerrard talks about his background of Anfield, I could look at more of this and find out more about his time at the academy and when he used to watch games as a fan. I could also read his dedicated autobiography, therefore I could get a more personal insight into what Gerrard felt at that time. I could also look at the sports personalities who are quoted and how their football careers generate to Stevie’s. I could watch the goal that was dubbed Gerrard’s best goal and compare it to some of his others. With watching some of his past times I could also re watch his debut and follow his career in YouTube clips.

Quotes• “We are being judged all the time and you have to accept it and embrace it and enjoy the pressure. That’s what I have

learned to do ever since I was 19. I had to. There’s no hiding place. People will point fingers.” (Steven Gerrard. Article written by Ian Ladyman, Friday 31st October. Appeared on http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2814747/STEVEN-GERRARD-Daniel-Sturridge-blows-away-s-probably-best-English-striker-ve-player-with.html )

Appeared on http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2814747/STEVEN-GERRARD-Daniel-Sturridge-blows-away-s-probably-best-English-striker-ve-player-with.html )

• Gerrard made his debut for Liverpool in November 1998. He played 39 times during last season’s buccaneering campaign, but as peculiar as it sounds, this one could be his last. (Ian Ladyman.
