Amazon plans to release its new Alexa device (after echo and echo dot) that can turn your mobile phone and work phone as intercoms. Amazon is planning to unveil new Alexa-powered devices based on artificial intelligence platform by the mid of this year, that will allow users to initiate phone calls by voice. “The device will also allow user to talk with others on the opposite end of another Alexa device through a feature that could serve as an intercom system”, according to amazon officials As on February, the new hardware was in testing phase inside of Amazon. Sources said they expect the launch in the coming months. While the Echo and Echo Dot have been considered the hottest new consumer products in the United States over the last year, Amazon needs to give its consumers more reasons to use them on a regularly. While some features like music streaming and weather updates are quite popular on the Echo today, thousands of the other Alexa “skills” — or voice apps — have had a difficulty gaining traction, according to a recent study. Some user sees communication features as potential killer apps for devices with voice call facility and intercom-like functionality will be a start. But the new intercom capability comes with some potential trouble. Amazon led the Series A investment in a startup, called Nucleus, that sells its own tablet computers through Amazon meant to replace in-home video intercom systems. Amazon has talked internally about making an Alexa device with a video camera, sources said, but it’s not clear if it will make it into this release. A Nucleus spokesperson said that the startup “cannot speak to Amazon’s plans” but “when we think about the future internet of things within the home, Nucleus is focused on building the future of simple family communication. There are plenty of other video platforms out there, but none that let you see your loved ones in under a second with one simple tap." The Wall Street Journal earlier published that Amazon and Google were considering adding phone call feature to their voice assistant gadgets, Amazon is decided to go ahead with that plan. Several details still remain unclear, including whether the user will sync their contacts with the device, or create a new device-specific phone number. An ex-amazon employee said Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has long been fascinated by Voice over Internet Protocol technologies such as Skype, WhatsApp well before the introduction of the Amazon Echo.
