Inaugural Ceremony– for the joy to begin! Change is the only constant. The inaugural ceremony of Anandosava-2011 witnessed some pleasant changes, only to heighten our perception and experience of joy. Mr Varun Kuriakose and Ms Nidhi Kamath took on their role as the emcees of the function and informed the audience the exuberance of the 3 day festival. The ceremony began with the Ms Laya R Menon invoking the almighty's blessings by a devotional bhajan. This followed by a video presentation of the Anandotsava-2010, to refresh our memories of the last year‟s mega event. Ms Prithvi Upadyaya and team presented a Bharatanatyam to welcome the participants by “sowing seeds of sportsmanship and competence” in them. Referring to Nitte as a “knowledge village” Prof Yuvaraju B N, the Head of the Organizing Committee welcomed everybody to the August gathering and the grand celebration of Anandotsava-2011. Saying that all colleges

eagerly await to participate in this fest, 8th in the series. He briefed about the events to be held for the coming 3 days and urged the partici-pants to enjoy and return with sweet memories. He also remarked that Nitte is well known for its hospitality and fairness and all the events have always been fair and shall always be so. Mr Shreyas Kulkarni introduced to the gathering the Chief Guest of the ceremony Prof. Dr.Ullas Kamath, Dean, Melaka-Manipal Medical College as a “Fit and smart professor”, who likes to interact with students.

The Principal of the Institution Dr S Y Kulkarni welcomed the dignitaries and the audience and

expressed his joy that the entire campus is in a festive mood. Dr Kulkarni narrated his experience with the Infosys HR executive in Mysore where he asked the latter about how they differentiate the candidates out of 1-2 lakh newly recruited employees. The HR executive told to Dr Kulkarni that 50% of their emphasis is on technical competence of a student, 25% importance is for their soft skills etc and the remaining 25% of their focus is on a student‟s interpersonal skills, and cultural values. Dr Kulkarni urged the students to “bring out and exhibit their talents wherever possible” and that Anandotsava is an effort to build the last 25% of skills the companies and the country is looking for. He stated that around 800 students from about 30 colleges would be participating in this 3 day cultural extravaganza. Lighting a lamp to mark the beginning of any event is a symbolic gesture of invoking knowledge and power, Quoting a Sanskrit shloka “Shubam karoti kalyanam , Arogyam Dhana Sampadhah, Shatru Buddhi Vinashaya, Deepa Jyotir Namosthute”, the emcee of the ceremony Ms Nidhi Kamath called upon the dais the dignitaries to inaugurate the function by lighting the lamp.


Chief Guest of the ceremony Prof Dr Ullas Kamath began his address with a rather humorous remark that when he entered the campus he wanted to go back to his college and take part in the events, for which it is too late for him now. In what he described as the “first ever Tryst with this institution” he expressed his hopes that the visit would be for him a memorable one. He appreciated the founder of the institution Late Justice K S Hegde for his efforts and the NET‟s “community development” services. He also em-phasized that “Indian culture is a living reality, the more you go away from it, the more you are enslaved by it”. Talking about Anandotsava, he said that there is a “grave re-quirement to have such fests to enhance and equip our youth with Indian culture, ethical sense of values in their hearts to create hearts filled with love, passion and patience”. He also urged the students to “accept victory or defeat with zeal”. Chairman of the inauguration committee Ms Shalini K Sharma delivered the vote of thanks in her inimitable way of warmth and jubilation. She expressed her gratitude to-wards the Principal, Dr S Y Kulkarni for having faith in her and her team giving them newer responsibilities and the freedom to innovate that culminated into a refreshingly different and successful inaugural ceremony. Speaking about the Chief Guest Dr Kamath, she said that “he not only stands tall in height and in stature but also in hu-mility” and thanked him for bringing home to us the richness of our culture and encour-aging us to embrace it. She thanked her student volunteers by expressing her genuine regards for those who worked hard to make the ceremony a success and appreciated their confidence and willingness to take up responsibilities with passion. She also thanked her staff for their support. She concluded by wishing the audience a very happy Anandotsava.

Editor Speaks… The excitement, the fun, the frolic is all back in NMAM Institute of Technology, NITTE, where the state level inter-collegiate Cultural and Literary mega event „Anandotsava - 2011‟ is being celebrated from 10th to 12th March 2011.This festival, being the most highlighted and celebrated as a part of Silver Jubilee Celebration of the institute, is showcasing the hidden talents of engineering students from all streams who otherwise, spend most of their time taming machines, typing computer codes, burning circuits and in other academic activities. Big talks… There is no dearth of thinkers says anand pathrika. Being the witness of a debate that brought out many fac-

ets of internet media, Stripped CBIs and Governments for their mismanagement and applauded Lokayuk-thas for its under recognized potential. If only the decision makers heard our debates, they would have come up with better decisions after all. But again, we also heard that we are our own government. Fair enough, now these were the debates we found hard to take sides of! Unmatchable voices, with some words of wisdom churned out of the debate. With the choice of topics rang-ing from conventional social networking sites to food security to the poor to the controversial Godhra case and the awareness of participants leading to raising of some fundamental questions to the system. We have just one message -Let us discuss not debate!

Eastern group singing We hear a voice, then a many, then again some beats and then a three. Vocal combinations and symphonies were the major highlight of this event. In itself a much ambitious one, the event saw a very varied mix of songs from Hindi cinema to Indi-pop, to our very own Kannada bhavageethe. Patriotism has some-thing to do with group, we feel. Whenever there is patriotism it is prominent in a group and whenever group singing comes to mind patriotism flows in. Sabse aage honge Hindustani, Mera Bharatham etc just corroborates our postulate, and we are glad it did!

In, out and around frames– Padma Kamath Perhaps our hands are just monochrome, perhaps our lives are all colourless. But what is it in her that she is oozing out colours? In focus –Art Beat, a paintings exhibit by our very own Final year CS student Ms Padma Kamath. The exhibit, we saw people go gaga over! We overheard them praise, well we admit that overhearing and spreading the news is bad manners, hence anand pathrika de-

cided to catch up one to one with the artist herself so that we don‟t miss a shade! 1.Being the stand alone artist of the college, how has the response been so far? The college has given a lot of encouragement in all ways. Firstly, when I expressed my desire to keep an art exhibition, the college supported me, and encouraged providing trans-portation, accommodation and other essentials. Above all, the college has given me a lot of moral support too. 2.What are the inspirations behind your works? If you meant motivation then they are my parents, my teachers and friends. Talking about inspiration, I get in-spired when I see some social cause, mostly my inspirations are nature. So I think I am close to nature in this way and also doing my bit by depicting its beauty in my works. 3. How difficult or easy is it to express your thoughts in your works, considering a lot of us are paralyzed in these senses? I feel that I can express more via my paintings. The painting reflects what I have in my mind. As I am into human drawings, I can very well express my feelings!!!By their actions or by creating stories which can give a message, I focus more on the expression of the face by which the viewers can come to know what I want to be expressed in my painting. I also take care to select the colour of the figure as well as the background to get the mood of the picture right. As I said, most of my thoughts are expressed and can be easily seen in my paintings. For some situations, I imagine myself in the position of the figure which helps me get the feel of the drawing more. 4. Our last question to you, what is your message to other artists, considering that there have been very talented par-ticipants in our events. I am still a learner, and my only message would be to keep learning throught your life because there is not any art which can be excelled in one‟s lifetime. Let’s dance, you and I From Bharatnatyam to hip hop to freestyle and what not. They danced and en-thralled us.
