I aimed my Magazine at…

16 - 24 years

Likes shopping at…Males Music they listen to…

Gigs they go to…Influenced by…

Page 4: Comparing my product to real media products

I feel that my magazine would be similar to NME and Q, the way that my magazine would be the same as NME and Q is because the colours of these two magazines are the colours on my magazine. Due to this, the target audience on my magazine will be the same for the target audience of NME’s and Q’s. I felt very strongly a need to promote up and coming bands in my magazine, while at the same time have noticeable celebrities featured in my magazine.

Genre

Page 5: Comparing my product to real media products

My Primary and Secondary Audience.

My primary audience will be males aged 16-24., that will be interested in reading magazines such as NME and Q. Other things that my primary audience will be interested in is shopping at places like Pretty Green and Fred Perry, this is shown through the cloths that the cover stars are wearing.

My Secondary Audience will be people who don’tnecessarily buy the product but read it because they have borrowed it off friends who enjoy reading indie magazines or because they have been advised to read the magazine.

Page 6: Comparing my product to real media products

Questionnaire

I did a questionnaire to find out what people who are interested in Indie music would like the most in a magazine, I took into accountwhat people said and used their answers to make the bestpossible Music Magazine.

Page 7: Comparing my product to real media products

My mood board represents people who are going to buy my magazine, the images shown represents the types of things my target audience will like. My target audience will more than likely be on social networking sites because they are young and this creates audience appeal.

The masthead is in bold, the effect of this is that it makes the whole page stand out more and will attract the audience because of the red on the I of Indie and B of beat. Another reason why my masthead is good is because it is the biggest font on the page, therefore, grabs audience attention. As this will be in every issue, it will create brand identity.

As the main image shows a direct gaze,It makes the audience feel that the people on the page are looking at them. The cover line, strap line and pull quote create anchorage to the image. Also, the colours of these stand out on the page, therefore, they fit into the house style.

The colours are linked to the house style, as the people names are noticeable names, it makes people want to buy the magazine and creates value for money because it shows what they are getting. As the web address/ website is shown this will create audience participation and synergy because it links to the magazineand gives the magazine another mediaplatform.

The masthead will be on every contents page, this will become recognisable to the reader, this creates brand identity. The heading stands out, this makes it obviousto the reader that this is the contents page. The colours stick to the house style, making the magazinelook professional. The issue number and date and web address is on the page to create audience participation and synergy.

The images on the page clearly stand out, especially the red and white circular background, this draws the audience in and makes the whole page stand out more and look more efficient. The page numbers on each image allows the audience to find each page easily, making the magazine fun and enjoyable to read.

Editor’s letter makes the reader feel welcome and encourages the reader to buy the magazine again, to create brand loyalty. The picture of the editor helps the readerfeel more welcome. I put banners round the categoryheading to make them stand out, this makes the audience to know what feature is under that banner and make it easier to find the pages.

The page numbers are different to the writing of the features, the effect of doing this is that it will make the features stand out more and it will make it easier for the audience to see what page the features will be on.

The colour scheme links to the house style of the magazine, this shows consistency and professionalism as I’ve used it throughout the magazine. It’s the biggest font on the page and it’s in capitals to make it stand out. Also, the audience will be able to see the heading easily and clearly.

The text is in columns, this makes it easier to read for the target audience and because it is in chunks it doesn’t look like a long piece of text, this will make it more fun to read for the audience. The secondary images helps to break up the text and links to the main image. The questions are in red and answers in white, this breaks up the interview to make it easy for the audience and links to the house style of the magazine.

The main image is clear to see and the audience can clearly see that it is the person who the interview is about. The grey box and pug help audience participation as in the grey it has the latest news from Indie Beat website and in the pug there is a chance for the audience to win tickets for a festival. This persuades audience to read the magazine.

The heading of the sectionbrings audience participation because it is the chance for the audience to have their questions answered by Liam Fray. Also, as there is a pull quote, it encourages them to read the interview because it is a short insight to what is in this section.

Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your product?

Page 16: Comparing my product to real media products

My magazine will be published by IPC Media, the reason to why my magazine will be published by IPC media is that they publish NME. NME is a magazine similar to mine, due to this, my magazine will challenge NME, and I will make my magazine their rival company.

I believe that my magazine will be successful if it is published by IPC media because NME is a very popular and successful magazine. In addition with this, NME target people who be interested in music which my magazine target. Due to this, I think that because my magazine is published by IPC Media who publish NME, then my magazine will be successful.

Page 17: Comparing my product to real media products

My magazine will come out monthly, the reason to why my magazine will be coming out monthly is because there will be more features in the magazine and moreopportunities for the audience to win prizes than if my magazine came out weekly. This will make my audience happy because their will be more of an opportunity for my audience to win prizes if the magazine came out monthly. Not only this but because there is more features they will have more to read than if it was a weekly issue. As my magazine comes out monthly, my target audience will be more anticipated to see what the next issue will have in it.

My magazine will cost £1.20, as my target audience is 16-24 year olds it will make them happier because it is cheaper rather than a magazine that costs £1.80. The reason to why my magazine is cheaper than other magazines is because my target audience is a young target audience then it makes them more likely to buy the magazine, than if the magazine was £1.80, due to this, I think that my magazine is a reasonable price for students. Due to my magazine being cheap, I believe this will create brand loyalty.

Page 18: Comparing my product to real media products

My masthead on the front cover is bold, this creates brand identity because when they see it in every issue then the font will be recognisable to the audience and they will associate this font with my magazine, this also creates brand identity. For the name and tagline of the magazineitself, it is short and easy to remember for the audience, therefore, the audience will be able to easily remember my magazine.

At the bottom of the page is the web address/ website of the magazine, this helps bring brand loyalty because if they go online they can see more features that the print based version doesn’t have on it. Not only this but they can see all the latest news on the Indie Beat website.

Page 19: Comparing my product to real media products

On my contents page of Indie beat I have got the web address/ website, this is also on the front cover. This is to persuade the target audience to go online and see what other features we have got, which isn’t on the print based. Also, this could attract more people to the magazinebecause they will not cost them to see features of Indie Beat online.

Social Networking will be vital for brand loyalty because my magazine targets young people the majority of young people are on social networking sites, therefore, they will be able to see every status that we make. Not only this but it widens the audience range and I will be able to attract a bigger range of audience because nearly everyone has social networking.

Subscriptions creates brand loyalty, because if my target audience subscribe to Indie Beat they will get better offers and bigger rewards, this persuades more people to be a subscriber of the magazine. With brand loyalty I will be certain of always having people buying my magazine, so with the use of subscriptions this could attract other people to buy the magazine.

Page 20: Comparing my product to real media products

The use of the pug and grey box will create brand loyalty, because if the target audience see that they can have a chance to see the Courteeners live then they will always want to see what the next issues offer is. The grey box can attract the target audience to go onlinebecause if they want to read more, then they will be able to go online and subscribe to the magazine which will make brand loyalty.

When the audience see that their questions could be in an issue of Indie Beat then they are more than likely to buy the next issue because other people may like to see their questions being issued in other issues of the magazine.

Page 21: Comparing my product to real media products

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge

forms and conventions of real media products?

By Henry Gaskell

Question 4

Page 22: Comparing my product to real media products

My magazine is a music magazine, specifically targeted at the Indie Genre. My target audience of this magazine will be males and females, targeted around the age of 16-25. Inside my magazine will be many conventions that the target audience would expect to

see in a magazine like mine. There are many ways in how my media product has use, develop or challenged the forms and conventions of real media products that are

very similar to mine because one reason is that they are both music magazines. In addition, not only are they both music magazines but the sub- genre of the real media

products and my media product is that it is both of an Indie genre.

My Product

Page 23: Comparing my product to real media products

My front coverI have used many forms and conventions on my music magazine front cover. The first of many forms and conventions I have used is that I have put a header at the top of the page, the forms and conventions of this is that it persuades my target audience to see what kind of poster is inside and attracts them, the way I have developed this to try and make them even more attracted by my header is that I have got red around the writing in the header, the way this shows I have developed the forms and conventions is that it makes my magazine front cover stand out from other magazine front covers. The second form and convention I have on my front cover is that the font of my title on the front cover is in bold, the reason to why I have done this is that it makes the name of the magazine stand out more so that the target audience will be able to see the name of my magazine and will be able to easily remember it, the way I have used and developed this form and convention is that the I of Indie and B of Beat are in red, while the other colours are in black, the connotations of this is that it makes the front cover more appealing and makes my overallfront cover more effective than if all the colours was in black. Other forms and conventions that I have used is that my main image on my front cover clearly stands out on the page, also, when looking at my main image the target audience will think that the two people on the page are looking directly at them, this shows that I have used a direct gaze on my front cover. To develop this and add to the effect of making the audience think the two people are talking directly to them is that the pull quote I have used says “WE ARE GOING TO BE THE NEXT BEST THING” when the audience look at the pull quote and see the main image looking right at them (Direct gaze) this will make them think the two people are talking to them and are trying to persuade them to buy the magazine. In the centre of the front cover I have got the mastheadbold and in bright red, the connotations of me using this is that it make the name stand out more and will make the target audience remember it easily, to develop the forms and conventions I have used a white outline on the red writing so that it easily stands out more on the black background. At the bottom of the page I have used a pug which makes the audience look at the images at the bottom of the page and I have got the web address of the magazine, this convention shows I’m using audience participation on my front cover to try and involve my audience more. I also, have recognisable names on my front cover so that people who like Indie music will know who the names on my front cover are. The house style on my front cover is

blocked, the target will be able to see everything on the page easy and clearly.

Page 24: Comparing my product to real media products

Front Cover Forms and ConventionsThere are many similarities on my music magazine front cover to real media front covers. The first similarity is that on the NME and Q front covers I have used the same colour scheme as they have, the connotations of using the same colour scheme as these two real media products is that red, white and black stand out the most when put together, this makes the whole front cover more effective. Other similarities with my media front cover and real media front covers is that on the MOJO and NME magazine front cover I have put a header on the top of the page which they have as well, this makes the magazine more appealing to the target audience because they know what is going to be inside the media product. However, the way I have challenged the forms and conventions of the real media front cover products is that on my header I have made the writing stand out more that what the MOJO and NME magazines have, this makes my magazine more efficient and makes it stand out more. On my front cover media product I have used a pull quote, this is the same on the MOJO and NME media front covers, this is a good convention because it makes my magazine look like a real media product as magazines such as MOJO and NME also use it. The last similarities on my media product to a real media product is that on the NME and mine we both have two people as the main cover image, this shows I have used same conventions because it makes the magazine different to ones like Q and MOJO. Also, on my media front cover I have used a pug at the bottom of the page, this is the same on the MOJO and NME front cover as it makes the front cover stand out more.

The difference I have used on my front cover to the front covers of NME, MOJO and Q is that at the bottom of the page I have got the web address, this challenges the forms and conventions of the real media products because it shows on my product I am showing audience participation which means the audience will be going online on my music magazine. Other differences between my media front cover product to real media front cover products is that on mine I have got a plus sign on the front cover , which Q, NME and MOJO haven’t, this challenges the forms and conventions of real media products because it shows on my media product I am using symbols to try and make the overall cover more appealing. The Mojo colour scheme is different the colour scheme that I have used on my front cover because I have used: red, white and black, whereas, Mojo have used: Gold, white, yellow and Black. This challenge the Mojo product because I think that using a maximum of three colours is better than using 4.

Page 25: Comparing my product to real media products

My Contents page

On my music magazine contents page I have tried to use many different forms and conventions. The first of my forms and conventions is that at the top of the page I have got a header which has the IB (for Indie Beat) in redand the word contents in white, the forms and conventions I am using here is that I am using all three colours of my colour scheme at the top of the contents page, this will make the overall page more efficient because it all clearly stands out. The way I have tried to developed these conventions is that on the IB I have got a white out line around the red writing, this will appeal more to my target audience because it makes the IB stand out more, with this I have put a red out line around the white word contents, this makes the forms and conventions more appealing as it makes the word contents stand out with the black background behind it. Next to that I have got the issue number and month the magazine came out, this shows the audience what issue this magazine is and what month it came out, below this I have got the web address again but more clearer, the conventions of this is that the audience will be able to clearly see it and will go online. This creates Audience participation because they can go on the Indie Beat website and see more conventions from my magazine. Below the IB contents is the Editor’s letter, the reason why I have done this is because it makes the reader feel like they are being welcomed to the magazine. To make them feel even more welcomed I have put a picture of the Editor on the page, this helps them feel welcomed even more. On the left hand side of the page is all the features that are going to be in my music magazine, I have put the page numbers in red and the writing next to the page numbers in black, this is so that the features clearly stand out to the audience. I have also used section headings so that all the features looked blocked (house style) and it is easy for them to see features. At the bottom of the page I have got a pug, Here I am using an offer for the target audience which makes them more involved with Indie Beat which creates Audience Participation. On the right hand side of the magazine I have all my pictures, on these pictures I have put the page numbers on which page these pictures will be on, the page numbers on these pictures are big which will make the audience clearly see them. The picture at the bottom of the page has red and white circular lines on it, this makes the whole page stand out in general and will attract the audience to that particular part on the page. The house style on my front cover is blocked and the layout is easy for the target audience to see and read.

Page 26: Comparing my product to real media products

Contents page forms and conventions

There are many similarities with the forms and conventions of my media product with real media products. The first similarity with my contents page and that of Q and NME is that the colour scheme of our contents page are very similar. Another similarity with my contents page with those of NME, MOJO and Q is that I have organised all my features appropriately, like all the real media products have done. However, one way I have challenged the forms and conventions of real media products is that I have put an editors letter at the top of my contents page, also with this I have added a picture of the editor to make the reader feel more welcomed to the magazine, this gives of a good impression to the audience which will persuade them to buy future issues.

The Images on my contents page are similar to those of the real media products because I have got a lot of images on one side of the page, this is like the real media products. Also, the way I have challenged the forms and conventions of the real media products is that in the images I will have the page numbers of which these pictures will feature on, however, on the Q contents they do include the page numbers on the Images.

I have used a pug on my features page, this is similar to the NME contents page because they have writing in an arrow at the bottom of their page. This shows I am using, but at the same time challenging real media products because I am offering the audience more.

The house style on my contents page is very similar to the house style of NME and Q. It is blocked and the target audience will be able to see my music magazine clearly.

Also on my contents page is that I have got a subscription part at the bottom of your views, this shows I am using the forms and conventions of real music magazines because it helps my magazine get a wider range of audience. Differences

There are many differences on my contents page with real media products, the first of many is that the colour scheme on MOJO is different to mine, This Challenges MOJO’s colour scheme because I think that MOJO’s Colour scheme is plain and won’t make the target audience be impressed, byhow much the magazine stands out.

On MOJO’s contents page they have only one image, this means that my contents page is challenging MOJO’s because it shows that my contents page stands out more than MOJO’s does.

Similarities

Page 27: Comparing my product to real media products

My Double Page Spread

I have used many forms and conventions on my double page spread, the first on many is the house style is easy and clear for the target audience to see.

The colours I have used represent the colours of the magazine, which are also on the front cover and contents page. The colour scheme makes the whole page stand out more.

The use of pugs makes the page more appealing to the audience as it makes them look at the pug and see what the writing says.

The text is in columns. Makes it page blocked and makes it clearer to see for the audience.

Red column in middle of page, in this box is where shows audience who took the images.

Pull quotes, more interactive with audience.

Page 28: Comparing my product to real media products

DPS Forms and Conventions Similarities The colour scheme on the Jake Bugg DPS, uses the same colours as on my DPS. The effect of having this colourscheme is that it is eye catching.

I have used one main image on one side of the page, this is the same on the Vaccines and Jake Bugg DPS. This will make the audience look at that side of the page.

All the text on my DPS is in columns like the real magazines, this makes it easier for audience to see.

I have used a pull quote on my DPS, this shows I have used the forms and conventions of real music product with the Jake Bugg and VaccinesDPS because these two products also use a pull quote.

I have used a drop cap on my DPS, this shows I have used the forms and conventions of real media because on all the real media DPS they have also used a Drop cap. The reason to why I have done this is because the Drop cap makes the whole page stand out more.

DifferencesOn the Vaccines and Best of both world DPS, the colour scheme is different to the colour scheme of mine. However, I think I have challenged these two because I think my DPS stands out more.

Other differences on my DPS with real media forms and conventions is that on the best of both worlds DPS they have 2 main images.

Other differences with my DPS and real media DPS is that have got a caption box, informing the audiencewho have took the pictures.

Page 29: Comparing my product to real media products

Question 5

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Page 30: Comparing my product to real media products

Ideal Reader and Mode of Address

The ideal reader for my magazine would be a young man who is interested in Indie based music. My two cover stars help to demonstrate the ideal reader because of the cloths they are wearing, and hairstyles they both have, this fits in with Indie based music. With the cloths they are wearing and hairstyles many people who like Indie music will aspire to be like the cover stars because they represent Indie music. This would make a younger audience where cloths like this and have hairstyles like this if they are interested in this type of music.

Ideal Reader

Mode of Address

I think that my cover stars are an inspiration to the target audience and other people who are interested in Indie type music because they wear the type of cloths, attachedwith this music and their hairstyles represent the music.

Page 31: Comparing my product to real media products

Cover StarThe cover stars are used as an inspiration for the audience, here, they are used to draw the audience in and make them seem like they should aspire to be like these cover stars. My cover stars are successful in representing social groups in people who like Indie music because these two males are the same age and gender as the ideal reader. This helps attract the audience because it shows they should try and aspire to be someone like these two people.

The cover stars don’t look as mainstream as other magazines because they are representing instrumentbased music, here they look serious and show a direct gaze this is because they are serious about music and they want to show how they feel about indie music by looking straight at the camera, this makes the audience feel like they are staring at them.

Page 34: Comparing my product to real media products

Question 6

• What have learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Page 35: Comparing my product to real media products

PhotographyThis image is a good image because the lighting and positioning of the image makes it stand out than if it didn’t have good lighting and positioning. Another good thing about this image is that because it is a medium close up, the reason to why I think it is good that I have used a medium close up shot is that it makes the whole image stand out more and makes the cover stars look better and clearer.

The reasons to why I think this is a good image to use for my contents page is that it is a medium close up shot which makes the imagelook big on the page. Also, as the images look big on the red and white circular line it makes the whole image stand out more.

This is a good picture as the lightning of the picture is good and it makes the whole image lighter than it is, also, the positioningof the camera is good as the makes the picture close to the camera which will attract the audience.

Page 36: Comparing my product to real media products

Question 7

• Looking back at your preliminary task (Aquinas College Magazine), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression to the full product?

Page 37: Comparing my product to real media products

My Preliminary Front cover My full product front cover

I think there is a big progression from my preliminary front cover to my full product front cover, the reasons to why I think that my full product has progressed is that I think my full product front cover fills the page more than the preliminary front cover, In addition, you can not see the white background as much with my full product front cover.

Page 38: Comparing my product to real media products

There are many improvements with my full product main image to my preliminary front cover, one of the improvements is that I have edited the faces of the two people on the full product, this is to make the main image stand out more. Not only this but on my preliminary main image the image seems far away, on my full product I have zoomed in on the imagemore to make the whole page stand out.

There is a big difference with my masthead on my preliminary front cover to my full product front cover, the first big difference is that on the preliminary it doesn’t stand out as much as the full product masthead, on the full product masthead it is bold and stands out more, the effect of this is that the audience will see it more than on the preliminary.

On my preliminary front cover features there is a lot covering the page, however, on my full product front cover there is not as many features. The reason to why I have done this is that because I have got two main stars on my full product front cover I wanted them to fill the whole page, also, why the cover line it makes the whole page stand out more than on the preliminary front cover features.

At the bottom of the page is my secondary pictures, pug, bar code and web address. Here I think I have made a big improvement on my full product front cover than on my preliminary front cover, the reason to why I think it has improvedmore is because there is no white spaces on my full product, not only this but the full product secondary images stands out a lot more on my full product than on my preliminary one.

Page 39: Comparing my product to real media products

My preliminary Contents Page My full product Contents Page

Overall, I think there has been a big progression with my full product contents page than on my preliminary contents page. One of the reasons to why I think there has been a massive improvement is because I think on my full product contents page there is more on the page, and not as much white background than on my preliminary contents page. Another reason to why I think I have progressed a lot is because I think my editing skills on my full product has improved than on my preliminary contents page, an example: the masthead on my full product has two colours where as on my preliminary one it doesn’t show my editing skills.

Page 40: Comparing my product to real media products

I think there is a massive improvement with the masthead of my preliminary to the masthead of my full product, one of the reasons to how I think I have made a massive improvement is that I think the whole of my masthead on my full product stands out a lot more than the masthead on my preliminary. Also, my editing skills on my full product has improved a lot more than on my preliminary masthead.

The main images on my full product contents page have improved a lot than on my preliminary contents page, the first reason to why I think I have improved a lot on my full product contents page is that all the images on my full product contents page stands out more than on my preliminary, the first reason to how this shows this, is that the red and white circles on my full product make the whole page stand out more than on my preliminary contents page.

I think I have made a progression with my full product feature part to my preliminary features, this is because I think I have organised it out better on my full product one than on my preliminary one. In addition to this I have used apug, on my full product contents page to create more audience participation.

There are many similarities with my editors letter part on my preliminary contents and on my full product front cover, however, for the title of my editors letter it stands out a lot more than on my preliminary editors letter.

Page 41: Comparing my product to real media products

This is the font I finally chose to be for the masthead of my full product front cover, the reason to why I chose this to be the font is because it is more bold than the other fonts that you see on the left hand side of the page. Due, to this, this font that I have chosen is the best font in my opinion because of the fact the whole page will stand out a lot more than the other fonts.

Page 42: Comparing my product to real media products

I think that the pictures at the bottom of the page are better than the pictures at the top of the page. The first reasons to why I think they are better, is because the lightning of the pictures at the bottom of the page, makes the pictures look better on the pages I would design my magazine on. Not only are the pictures better at the bottom of the page because of the lightning but also, distance to where the pictures have been took are better because they look like they are nearer than the pictures at the top of the page.
