Front Cover The colours I have chosen to use are red, white, black and in places I am going to use a gold colour as I am using this colour for the double page spread. The reason for choosing the colour palette I have is because last year although the magazine wasn’t fully successful I feel that it wasn’t down to the colour choice I feel it was down to the rest of my product: images, font and arrangement. The reason for using the gold was because for my double page spread I am using a gold colour for the big ‘E’ because I want the model to be wearing accessories and so foresee the colours mixing well together if I just use the colours in the image, this style is used in magazines for example YOU magazine has exactly the same colour palette I am using for my product however they have used different colour for the double page spread, for one double page spread they have used the more conventional colour palette but have made it interesting by suing a black and white gradient spread across the two pages and another double page spread they have they have used rich brown colours. Last year for the masthead I had a play around with the different colouring of the text and I plan to still use the same style (colour in the ‘O’ and ‘.’ from ‘TODAY!’ different to the rest of the masthead) as I felt the arrangement of the two selections of colour made the masthead more interesting to look at. I am thinking of using a white to mix with the red and so to make use of this colour I am going to use white for the sell-lines. For the image I want to make it look very relaxing, like it didn’t take a lot to put together – I want the atmosphere to be relaxed as when reading magazines you want to be able to enjoy it and so don’t want to talk about too hyper and too depressing topics and so feel this would be a happy medium. As I am going to be relaxed images I plan to use informal text because this is a conventional style you use when writing for a magazine because you keep the formal stuff when reading a newspaper. I am going to keep the amount of types of font I use to a minimum and so plan on using a different font sizes to make my audience aware of the different sections of the magazine. The reason for the this particular layout is because I have seen this style used in other magazines and feel that it works for what I am trying to achieve the magazine I found most helpful in deciding on my layout was YOU.

Contents Page

The main image for the contents page I want to be a little more bold as I want it to seem really enticing and as the front page has enticed them with the relaxed approach I want to continue the theme but I want the images to look different and one way I plan on changing this is to slightly change the zoom of the camera and so instead of a medium shot which is the front cover’s image I plan to use a medium close-up so there is more detail in this image and the reason for this is because the contents page image will be displayed a lot smaller than the front cover image however I still want it to have the same impact.

The reason for the this particular layout is because I have seen this style used in other magazines and feel that it works for what I am trying to achieve the magazine I found most helpful in deciding on my layout was YOU/NME. I liked both magazines contents page and thought that both styles would suit my magazine and didn’t want to duplicate exactly one or the other magazine and so used the artist index idea from NME. The layout from YOU, however decided to add and change a few tings as I felt that 3 smaller images instead of 2 images with text would look better and the layout of the extra information wasn’t successfully done and so will re-work this section when creating my magazine. The images that I am thinking of using is a reconstructing of album covers however I will not use any of the originals I feel using my own images will make me feel like I have had more say over what goes into my product.

I will continue to use the same style of font as the front cover as I want to have continuity through the product.

Double Page Spread

I am going to go away from the conventional thing for the double page spread – colour wise that is – as I plan on using a gold colour to match the colour of the images I am using. This is not by any means unconventional as other magazines use certain colours that don’t match the colour palette and because it is a double page spread it is still effective and the reason for this is because double page spreads are exclusive features and so have a wider scope when it comes to colouring. With the colour palette for my double page spread in mind I plan to use hints of the colour in the rest of my product, just so that it doesn’t look too strange and an overload for the audience.

The font I am going to use for this piece of work will need to be thought out really closely as I am planning using a big letter for the artist name and depending on the font style will depend on how good the feature will look on the page. I have decided to go for Times New Roman font as the curves and points will go with the layout of the magazine ’E’.

When looking more closely at the photograph for the double page spread I can see the photographer has thought hard about the photograph of how it will look on the page and the fact that the artist is facing towards the text, it is a pretty easy presumption to make they have done it so that when you look at the picture your eyes are then drawn to the article to the left of the image.
