Political• Each Greek polis was fiercely

independent, but there were times when they united.

• The Delian League: Athenian alliance for defense against the Persians.

• The Peloponnesian League: Spartan alliance for defense against the Persians.

Political• After the Persians were beaten

back twice, the Greeks began to fight each other again.

• The Delian League led by Athens provoked and attacked the Peloponnesian League led by Sparta.

• The Peloponnesian War lasted for almost 30 years, and ended with a Spartan win. The Delian League was disbanded.

• The Peloponnesian War left the Greeks weak and tired of war.

• Phillip II of Macedonia (just north of Greece) invaded and united all of Greece (except Sparta) for the first time.

Political• After uniting Greece, Phillip II of

Macedonia, was assassinated by one of his guards.

• Alexander, Phillip II’s son, became the new king. Many Greeks thought he would be weak and rebelled for independence.

• Alexander quickly crushed them.

Political• In order to make the Greeks

happy (and stop rebelling), Alexander offered to attack and destroy the Persian Empire.

• Alexander crushed the Persians and destroyed their empire.

• Alexander argued for greater conquest, and marched to capture India.

Political • Alexander’s men were tired of fighting. The Indians also used elephants; many Greeks were scared of them.

• Alexander’s men refused to go any further, and convinced Alexander to back West.

• One the way back, Alexander became sick with a fever and died. Most likely from a mosquito bite.

Effects of Alexander’s Conquest

• Alexander’s empire split into 3 Hellenistic kingdoms. Hellenism spread throughout the east.

• Many of the cities that Alexander built and named after himself became centers of Greek culture.

• People began speaking Greek as a 2nd language and trade increased throughout the whole region.
