The public can at an immunization clinic Saturday, Oct. 2nd 8am-4pm, & Sunday, Oct. 3rd 10am-4pm, at Village Pointe, 168th & West Dodge Road. Besides flu shots ($20), Omaha-based Vaccination Services Inc.& Health Fairs of America will administer (PPV) pneumonia vaccinations ($30), & at no-cost for Medicare Part B. See the following list. Anyone can get the disease, but the Centers for Disease Control considers others greater risk: Anyone over age 65 Individuals over age 2 w/ serious health problems Adults & children with lung, heart, liver, or kidney problems Individuals with diabetes, sickle cell disease, alcoholism, or HIV/AIDS Native Americans (Source: www.cdc.gov ). PPV covers 23 types of pneumonia bacteria. Protection takes 2 to 3 weeks. The very old and people with long-term illnesses may not respond as well, or at all. While most need only one shot, the CDC recommends a second dose for high-risk, given 5 years after the first vaccination. Children 10-years-old & younger may get a second dose, 3 years after the first. Check with a physician. The shot does not cause illness. Severe allergic reactions are rare. Redness & pain at injection site are common, but temporary. On the flip side, pneumonia can lead to serious lung, middle ear, blood, sinus, & brain infections, and cause death. So, preventive steps, like getting a PPV shot, are wise, & strongly advised.
