Introduction

The fourth food security summit of the D-8, a group

of eight developing countries, convened in Nigeria

on December 4, 2013. The D-8 includes Indonesia,

Iran, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Bangladesh; the

African nations of Nigeria and Egypt; and Turkey.

Accounting for about 15 percent of the world’s

population, the D-8 was founded in 1997 to create

stronger economic ties between member nations.

About the Summit

The summit, which provided opportunities for

meetings and strategy, focused on bilateral and

multiparty collaboration, as well as the use of

standards and developing partnerships with member

states’ private sectors. Working groups concluded

their tasks, and strategies for implementing group

decisions were formulated. Following the meeting,

the D-8 nations, each of whom was represented by

an agriculture minister at the summit, will continue to

put into practice their program for food security. The

plan calls for greater cooperation in areas ranging

from seed banking and fertilizer to animal feed and

marine fisheries.
