In 2012 the whole thinking world iscelebrating the 90th anniversary of thebirth of Alexander Alexandrovich Zinoviev– logician, philosopher, sociologist, writer, ideologist, outstanding citizen of Russia.

The world is discovering for itself thephenomenon that is Alexander Zinoviev,Renaissance man, one of the mostalluring, intriguing individuals of the 20thand beginning of the 21st Centuries, ahero of our time, while being a man aheadof his time…

Alexander Zinoviev is the firsttheoretician of humankind in its era ofglobal awakening. He devoted his wholelife to the study of the intellectual, socialand civic awakening of humanity, and ofits principal driving force: reason. Hislegacy focuses on the preservation anddevelopment of the “comprehensionfactor”, which allows the individual tocomprehend mankind’s social existenceand helps him to survive in the world oftoday as an independent and free-thinking human being. After all, only “manignites the flame of reason and there is nosubstitute for this miracle”.

The life of Alexander Zinoviev offers aRussian blueprint for resisting socialentropy and ideological manipulation, theglobal dumbing down of people’s minds,

obscurantism, superimposed choice, anabsence of any alternative and themanipulation of history. It is the path ofresistance to the planned global controlof the human evolutionary process.

His creed is the pursuit of truth, whatever the cost. His formula is service tothe truth. His standard is the acme ofintellectual ratiocination. His world is thesphere of society, to a study of whose lawshe devoted himself wholeheartedly. Hisheroic feat was to throw down the gauntletto an all-powerful Leviathan. His fate was thetragedy of a Russian genius and prophetwho was banished from his Fatherland. Hisepoch is the great turning point inhumankind’s evolutionary process. Hisintellectual tradition of teaching people tothink in a new way is his uncompromisingsearch for a social and civilised alternativeevolutionary path in today’s world.According to his fundamental law it is onlypossible to remain human by going againstthe current.

Zinoviev's path is that of a New Manwhose moral code is grounded in thefollowing values:

DIGNITY,

JUSTICE,

CREATIVE WORK

«The prayer of the believing atheist»

«It's been proved by cyclotrons And so it must be true,The world is full of electronsAnd chromosomes - not YOU.And so you don't exist, oh God,You're just a priestly lie;But all the same, I pray you, God,Exist for me - please try!You may not be omnipotent,Omniscient, all-blest,Farsighted and benevolent,Forgiving and the rest. It's not a big request I make,So do your best for me:All-seeing be, for goodness' sake,I pray you, God, please see.Just see, that's really all I want,Just that and nothing more.Just keep an eye on what goes on,On who's against, who's for. That's all you've got to do, oh Lord,There's nothing else to say;All else besides can be ignoredSave what I do, what They.I'll make concessions if you want:If you can't watch it all,Watch one per cent of what goes on,Just that and nothing more.We need someone to watch this world,So that's why I insistAnd roar and scream and rantOh Lord!!Not pray – demand:Exist!!I whisper,I croak:ExistOh Lord!!!I pray,Not demand,Exist!!!!»

Philosophical Problems ofmany-valued logic

«Every scientific theory is two-valuedor in general n-valued in the sense thatlogical symbols 'and', 'or', 'if...then...', etc.,are used in it, and the rules of deductioncan be defined and justified in logicaltheories in which two or generally n truthvalues are attributed to the propositions. Thus the choice of one or another systemof definitions depends on the propertiesof the object domain studies and on theconditions of its knowledge»

«As to the rise of many-valued logic, itaims (among other problems) at giving awider and more exact description of thelows of scientific thinking, and ataccounting also for the progress ofscience in this respect, but it in no waydenies the laws of classical logic. It deniesonly the claim of some representatives oftraditional logic for a final completenessof formal logic and for the independenceof its laws from the progress ofknowledge»

Alexander Zinoviev, 1960

Foundations of the logical theory ofscientific knowledge

«Thus, the logical theory of scientificknowledge is not a special science, different fro, and paralled to logic. It issimply that part (or aspect) of logic whichmakes it possible for the formal apparatusof logic to be counted precisemy as anapparatus of logic and not of any otherscience. It explains the basis on which thisapparatus is set up, the direction ofdevelopment of it, and paths of using it inthe describing and perfecting of thelanguage of science»

«It is our view that one can construct atheory of scientific knowledge adequateto the practice of contemporary science

only with the help of various logicalcalculi, methods, conceptions, trends, etc.To accomplish this the very problems oflogic have to be expanded and reorientedrelative to the tradition which has beenbuilt up in logic. We have tried to show thepossibilities which can be discoveredalready in the analysis of the mostfundamental concepts and principles oflogic if they are regarded as means ofdescribing the properties of scientificknowledge»

Alexander Zinoviev, 1967

«The Comprehension Factor»

«The comprehension factor in myrendition (my teaching) is radicallydifferent from every other existingteaching of this sort that I know of – as awhole as well as detail-wise. All suchdisciplines – or teachings (includingMarxism) are conceived as compilationsof intellectual materials penned by avariety of authors. What I propose is atheory with a singular organicconceptual structure (non-compilatory),organised as a whole in accordance withthe rules of my own logical conception»

Intellectology

«In this part of the book I give apopular description of my research inwhat I call the logical aspect of humanintellectual activity, or logical intellect. Iuse the term «intellectology» for referringto the scientific discipline that studieslogical intellect. As for its subject area, intellectology combines everything thatpertains to logic (which studies the natureof cogitation), ontology (which studiesthe nature of being) and epistemology(which studies the nature and scope ofknowledge)... I consider logic, ontologyand epistemology to be different facets ofa single discipline – a science that studiesthe following three aspects of the humanintellect simultaneously: language, beingand knowledge»

Alexander Zinoviev,

«The Comprehension Factor», 2006

The Future of the human intellect

«The masters of the new world donot need an evolved intellect. It is quitebeyond their comprehension. Partial orlocal applications of intellect arecommonplace; however, they do not gobeyond the narrow boundaries ofparticularities and do not affect thesummary state of human intellect in anyway. Intellect in my understanding hasnever been studied scientifically withthe application of all resourcesavailable. It remains a terra incognita, amaterial for bulk verbiage anddemagoguery. I have no knowledge ofwhether the situation is going toimprove or not. Most likely, theimprovements will be insignificant andwithout any mass success. Principalchanges in foreseeable future are rightout of the question. There is no one to

introduce them, and nobody has anypractical need for anything of the sort»

Alexander Zinoviev, 2006

About the sense of life

«The phenomenon defined by theexpression ‘the sense of life’ is anideological phenomenon that meansone pertaining to masses.

A human taken as an individual canhave objectives in his life, not the senseof it. The individual has the sense of lifeas a part of a mass that carries certainideology. The sense of life is a state of anindividual that makes him a part ofsomething historically grandiose».

Alexander Zinoviev

Life on Earth

««I do not believe in the existence ofother planets but the Earth inhabited byliving and sentient creatures. Life ingeneral and humanity in particular areunique and inimitable phenomena.Should they reach extinction on Earth, theUniverse shell forever remain dead andsoulless».

Alexander Zinoviev for «The International

Book of Peace», Munich, 1990

«The Yawning Heights»

«Let's tot up the balance sheet,Chatterer said to himself. Just a summaryof accounts. But a vital one.

What is the foundation of thefoundations of human existence? Alas, theanswer is a commonplace. It's been clearfrom the very start. Why did I have to livemy life through to be sure of it? I don'tknow.

I know only one thing: truth is thefoundation of any truly humanexistence. The truth about oneself. Thetruth about others. The battle for truthand against it is the most ferocious andprofound battle fought in society. Andfrom now on the level of developmentof society, from the point of view of itshumanity, will be defined by the degreeof truth it allows.

This is the first, the most primitive ofevaluations. When people achieve acertain minimum level of truthfulness, they will advance other criteria. Buteverything begins from there»

Alexander Zinoviev

«The Yawning Heights», 1976.

Translated from the Russian

«Homo Sovieticus»

«This book is about Soviet Man.He is anew type of man, Homo Sovieticus. Wewill shorten him to Homosos. I have adual relationship zith this new being: Ilove him and at the same time I hate him;I respect him and I despise him. I amdelighted with him and I am appalled byhim. I myself am a Homosos. Therefore Iam merciless and cruel when I describehim. Judge us, because you yourselves willbe judged by us»

Alexander Zinoviev, 1981

«The Global human anthill»

«Our XX century was probably, as forthe destiny of humans, peoples, ideas, social systems and civilizations, the mostdramatic in history of humanity. But it wasalso a century of human passions andgrief, a century of hope and despair, ofillusions and insights, of seductions anddisappointments, of joy and woe, of loveand hatred…

Maybe it was the last truly humanepoch, one to be replaced by centuries ofsuper-human or post-human history, onebare of hope and despair, bare of illusionsand insights, of seductions anddisappointments, bare of joy and woe, oflove and hatred»

The Reality of Communism

«Marxism makes a distinctionbetween the lowest stage of Communismwhich is Socialilm and the highest whichis full Comunism... It is reckoned thatsociety has not yet achieved this higheststage.

…I shall ignore the Marxist distinctionbetween Socialism and Comunism as apurely ideological phenomenon. I shallexamine the type of society that isdominant in the USSR and a number ofother countries as the actual embodimentof the aspirations of the classical Marxistsand of all the, the Marxist sense, progressive thinkers of the past»

Alexander Zinoviev,

«The Reality of Communism», 1981

Global Supra-society

«Global supra-society is formed notafter the mould of western societies, butafter the mould of supra-societies. It haswestern supra-societies in the process offormation as its components. Thesecomponents are fit into one whole byupper strata of the global supra-society –«society of the second order» on theworld scale. This stratum rules the today’shumanity, not a bunch of the superrich. The instant when the global supra-society has appeared the very type of theevolutionary process has changed: thedegree and the scale of understanding ofhistorical events have reached such levelthat chaotic evolutionary process wasreplaced by the evolution both plannedand managed»

Alexander Zinoviev,

«On the way to Supra-society», 1988

Colonial democracy

«Colonial democracy in a country isnot a result of the natural evolution ofits innate historical conditions and laws.It is something artificial imposed on thiscountry by external force contrary to itspotential and evolutionary tendencythat was inbuilt historically. It is keptafloat by colonial measures.

The country chosen for colonizationis lead into a state of affairs of completeinability to exist on its own. Frommilitary point of view, the country isdemilitarized to the point whenresistance becomes unthinkable.

The armed forces have the functionof keeping down the protests of thepopulation and suppressing eventualuprisings. National culture is vulgarizedinto a pittance. Masses are fed with thesurrogate of democracy made ofabsence of discipline, of low levelcontrols by authorities, cheapentertainment, debauchery and laissez-faire, of scale of values that free theindividuals of any moral self-containment»

A Thinker's Palette

«...ugly, and wretched society with whichthe artist has broken... There is somethinggrotesque in the sardonic, merciless satire ofevents which could as well have occurredelsewhere, even in the United States orFrance. Thus the compelling vision ofChernobyl: the evocative power of thisapocalyptic composition goes far beyond theaccident and calls into question the whole ofuncontrolled science.

The sharp, sparing lines formed withoutexcessive flourishes, are sometimesdeliberately brutal and vulgar so as to reflectmore clearly the absurdity and derisiveness ofa closed world. The choice of colours iswillingly limited, moving through a few dark, aggressive shades, marked here and there bydespair and nihilism. Opposition of intensereds and blues reinforce this oppressivenessof a penitentiary world where pessimismwithers even vague hopes and dashes hints ofcheerfulness.

...On all accounts, these are powerful, symbolic and thought-provoking works...

A valuable testimony»Claude Ketterer, art critic

Anguish, diurnal and nocturnal

«Alexander Zinoviev's paintings also havesimilarities to a whole artistic movement ofrealistical fantasy...

Zinoviev's tonalities – they are oftenmuted, sombre, «cold», – express anotherworld, a distorted, occasionally ironical, attimes profoundly bewitching, at timesobsessively disturbing world. Certainpaintings, such as the boldly composedDestiny, or Germany with its hieraticmonumentality (both are built from purple-red, yellow and black) convey even better themineral solitudes of an expanse forsaken byman. And when men - or women - do appear, they stand erect, motionless, their eyes turned

on an infinite and invisible horizon, captivesof the immutable. Add to that a baroque, albeit often manneristic emphasis created bythe juxtaposition of contrasted colours of abitter-sweet quality, and the physicaldistortions of humans and animals, especiallyhorses, whose bodies are given the clean, plastic elongations...

.. these paintings have a visionary powerthat fires both the soul and the mind.

The world has become a set of situationsto be fathomed, and the key is given by anuncovered tragic vein which is rooted in theinmost depths of Alexander Zinoviev... Afterthe fashion of his novels... his paintingsdescribe a tragicomic universe which must bedeciphered on two levels; the form says whatit represents and also reveals what lies in theinmost depths of each one of us, as weconfront all sorts of ideological systems: ournocturnal anguish»

Ideology of the Party of the Future

«After disintegration of the sovietcommunist block, disintegration of theUSSR itself and destruction of thecommunist social way of life in thecountries of this part of the world theepoch of the evolutionary decline andof total social counter-reaction hasbegun.

Social orientation of this counter-reaction is anti-communism, anti-socialism, anti-democracy, andanti-liberalism. The importantcomponent of this counter-reactionis artificially created, induced andstimulated total mind muddying, artificial reanimation of antediluvianideologies and invention of newideologies of the same intellectuallevel and orientation.

This evolutionary process becomes athreat to the existence of billions ofpeople on this planet as well one to thewhole of the humankind.

Can it be stopped? In my opinion itmay be possible only under condition ofcreation of the new ideology, comparableby its span to the Marxist one, butexceeding it by its intellectual level and byits degree of adequacy to the conditionsand demands of the third millennium, and under condition of appearance ofadequately strong organization ofsympathizers that will accept suchideology and will make its conscientiousobjective social transformations in thesense of ideals fo the future humanity, asdefined in this ideology.

The Party of the Future must notconsider itself as representative of certainpart of the population of the country, ofcertain oppressed, exploited, impoverishedetc. classes, i.e. like proletariat in the Marxistsense.

It must consider itself as a special kindof union that has one objective:

development of the new ideology(ideology of the future), propaganda ofthis ideology among citizensindependently of their social status, race, sex, ethnos, profession, etc.., growth ofnumber of sympathizers (personsaccepting propagated ideology) andunionization of such citizens in theframework of such objective for collectiveactions.

The party of the future underpresent conditions in place on ourplanet can be born exclusively on thetop level of intellectual and creative lifeof the contemporary human anthills(supra-societies).

The party of the future must not takepart in the day to day social-politicalactivity within the framework of theexistent social organization. It is none ofthe business of the opposition of suchlevel to operate for the good of theexistent social organization. Such a Partyhas a much more significant objective ofan epochal size, that is to lay foundationof the struggle of humanity for a socialideal alternative to westernism»

About the murder of SlobodanMilošević

«The voracious Moloch of monstrousunfairness that embodies the Americanstandards of justice has performed itignominious deed.

That ultimate, human something thatinflexible freedom fighter SlobodanMilošević, walled in the prison of theHaage Tribunal, was deprived of formany years, has run its course, has cut asthe guillotine, his worn out heart, strained nerves and suffering soul havegiven in.

Slobodan Milošević was killed byunpronounced verdict of the HaageTribunal. Shame on all of you who silentlywatched this slow bloodletting, be cursedall of you who worked the buttons of themerciless machinery of the sterile fascismthat does its dirty job in the name ofFreedom and Democracy»

«I want the people of which I am a partof to survive as a historically significantentity under actual dramatic andunprecedented circumstances.

Why we are slaves?

«Why we stay slaves in spite of all? Theproblem «Why we are slaves?» is in itsessence the problem «Why we prefer to beslaves?».

Not to fight, not to climb upwards, notto swim against the current makes lifeeasier - for some time the freefall isperceived by some people as flying.

Not the desire to be free, but the desireto deprive other people of the desire to befree is the substitute that is fed to thecitizens today. This is so much easier thanthe fight for not being enslaved. Theresults of the struggle for the true freedomare seldom recognized and only by a fewafter many generations pass»

«I Have a Dream of a New Man»

«Something quite horrible hasoccurred – the human being can barely besaid to exist any more, it virtually vergeson extinction.

The fact that individual human beingskeep on getting born does not negate thegrim reality that human beings no longerexist as entities that influence the courseof historical events.

We must start from scratch here, commencing with level zero – thecreation of a New Man. A civilised, idealistic, utopianist, naїve, starryeyed,non-egotistical, human being quiteuntouched by shrewdness

Such people did exist in the days ofyore, they lived among us, we wereaccustomed to knowing such people.Rousseau and Locke dreamed of suchhuman beings, likewise Hobbes and

Descartes. Could they have all perishedwithout a trace? I think not. Nobody canactually leave the world – the onlydestination for aspiring emigrants is a newlevel of culture, a new level of intelligenceand a new level of morals. It is possible toemigrate into the inner space. I do notthink humanity will degrade completely, and we might as well hope that humanbeings remain as human as possible, notwithstanding the emergence of thenew savage, one covered from head totoes in electronics and gadgetry of allsorts. Yet this new savage remainsperfectly barbaric.

Still, for as long as we remain human,we have to realise that none of thesecybercreatures could ever replace themost important identifier of humanity –the fire of the mind. This is a wonder forwhich there is no substitute.

I see the emergence of a New Manbeing as the only hope we have as asentient species, and I do hope that this

miracle happens before too long. Allthese years we have seen the practical, businesslike, shrewd, cruel andegotistical people methodically trampledown everything that's decent andhumane about people. All I want is forthe New Man to survive, it is my fondestand most cherished dream. Otherwisethere is no hope for our survival as aspecies»
