Why Do We Need Fly Killers?

main reasons:

Flying insects carry at least as much potential disease as cockroaches - the extra mobility flies have actually give them the potential to be even more lethal cross contaminators!

Hygiene, Disease & ContaminationFlying insects (flies) have been found to carry a wide range of dangerous micro-

organisms (bacteria and parasites) particularly on their legs and in their saliva and excreta. After landing and walking on excrement, flies may carry up to as many as

6 million bacterias including; E.coli, Salmonella, Klebsiella, Campylobacter and many others. Even a very limited amount of any of these is enough to cause serious disease.

Flies spread these bacterias by landing on food or food preparation areas, so be wary if these have been touched by a fly!

How does this occur? When a flying insect lands or feeds on un-hygienic substances, disease pathogens are transferred onto their numerous body hairs or are ingested into their gut.

Since these insects are so mobile they can quickly move away from their disgusting habitats and carry the disease pathogens to the human food chain.

If a fly manages to land directly onto food or a food preparation area then there is a good chance it will have contaminated it with a disease causing pathogen.

LegistlationInternationally, by law, food that is sold must be wholesome and free from contamination. Companies are required to demonstrate ‘due diligence’ that they have taken every precaution against contamination from flying insect pests.

The primary food hygiene laws in the UK are the Food Hygiene (England) Regulations 2006 (and equivalent regulations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and Regulation (EC) No. 852/2004 on the Hygiene of Foodstuffs.

The 2006 law is based on EU legislation that incorporates many points from previous UK food hygiene and safety acts. It states that it is a legal requirement for businesses to implement a food hygiene plan based on HACCP principles.

HACCP (Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points)

HACCP is an internationally recognised set of protocols designed for commercial businesses to ensure their facilities control potential health and safety hazards. Businesses must consider the control of pests in their HACCP plan, and maintenance records of any equipment (including flykillers) will become part of the plan.

Where a pest control company is employed to monitor the premises on a regular basis, their reports should be kept as part of HACCP documentation

In the USA and affiliated regulatory nations the FDA Food Act of 1990 states:

“ALl areas where food is served, eaten or prepared, adequate precautions should be made against flying insects.”

The Food Standards Agency provide further information on food hygiene regulation and good practice - www.food.gov.uk

European Parliament and of the Council of 29th April 2004 of the Hygiene of Foodstuffs states:

“Adequate procedures are to be in place to control pests.” (Annex II Food premises: Chapter IX: point 4) Regulation (EC) No 852/2004

Environmental BenefitsThe alternative to UV insect control is the use of pesticides and associated delivery systems. These can potentially cause chemical contamination and also generate considerable additional waste. The use of products such as aerosol insecticides has therefore seen a rapid decline.

Additional Benefits

UV insect control has the advantage of controlling the capture of insects that allow professional users to suggest where any problems may be originally emanating from. Insecticides can cause flying insects to die or be repelled towards sensitive areas. Here we see the advantages of correctly surveying a site and taking an integrated approach to insect control.

How Does A Fly Killer Work?

UV tubes attract flying insects by emitting a wavelength of light attractive to flies.

The most effective wavelength range for effective flying insect protection is recognised as peaking at 365mm.

Fly killers all use ultraviolet tubes to attract flying insects into the unit, before either zapping them dead on a high voltage killing grid or trapping them on a adhesive glueboard.

What Makes A Good Fly Killer?

Ease of Positioning and Sevicing

Factors such as mounting options and slimline design are beneficial. Also the time it taken to change the lamps and glueboard are important to professionals.

Design

Flykillers need to be appropriate for the environment they go into and sometimes discretion will be more important than pure effectiveness. You wouldn’t want to go to a restaurant and see flies stuck to the wall while you were eating, therefore more discrete options such a ViroLite 20 would be ideal for this!

Effectiveness (i.e.the amount and range of flying insects that the product attracts.)

Obviously, the more direct UV light that is visible from the unit, the more potential there is for it to attract insects. Secondary sources of light such as reflective surface light are also attractive.

Effectiveness will also be related to the quality of the tubes and how well maintained they are. Highly effective tubes emit at 365nm, however their output will decline over time, so regular changes are important. Generally the higher the wattage of the units the more effective they will be as the light output will be higher.

It is also important to attract and kill insects quickly. Units with an open design are best in this situation.

Where Should You Locate Fly Killers?

The majority of fly killers are believed to give optimum performance when sited at around 2m. There are some species of flies that require a lower position but this advice provides a good general rule.

Install flykillers away from food preparation areas. It is important not to lure potential sources of cross contamination into sensitive areas.

Recommend enough models to cover the required area in line with the coverage guidelines.

However, there are basic principles that should be followed:

Consider the shape of the room and where the UV can be seen from. Although flies have very sensitive eyesight, the units will not give the same coverage levels as advertised if there are obstructions. Your room maybe only 40m2 but it is not possible to site a unit that can be seen in all areas, therefore additional units may be necessary.

Install UV Flykillers away from sources of light competition, such as windows, doors and high powered lighting. UV Insect control is most effective at night when there is no competing light.

Consider sources of steam or excessive heat, as this may have a negative impact on the units if they are not IP rated.

Be mindful that fly killer will need to be accessible for future servicing. All fly control units need regular servicing if it is to remain effective. Whilst the initial cost may be important, consider maintenance and running costs. To maintain maximum efficiency, change tubes ideally every 6 months but at least every 12 months.

Almost all locations will be slightly different; therefore the positioning of insect control units should require an individual assessment.

Types of Fly Killer Units

WALL MOUNTED fly traps are best used in critical food areas where electric flykillers are not appropriate.

SUSPENDED fly traps can be wall mounted, free standing or suspended and is best used in damp / harsh environments or critical food areas. They are most effective when suspended.

UPLIGHTER fly traps are wall mounted and best used in front of house areas where they need to be more discreet and fit into the décor. A silent and deadly method of control.

ELECTRIC ZAPPER units can be wall mounted, suspended or free standing and are appropriate fordomestic environments and small commercial outlets.

(this may vary depending on the size and type of facility)

Where Do WeNeed Flykillers?

It is clear that flying insects have the potential to cause health risks and maintaining practises that eliminate or reduce this threat are important in many locations.

Of course the primary concern will be for food production, processing, handling, preparation and serving businesses. However it is also a concern for clinical environments, agricultural areas, offices and even households. The presence of flies infers a lack of hygiene so even where food is not being prepared or served UV insect control machines will enhance individual perceptions of a facility.

Whilst legislation covers the use of flying insect control in specific circumstances, there are a number of wider applications where flying insect control can be used to protect businesses and safeguard the comfort of their customers.

Hotels

Farm houses, barns, stables, livestock areas are all prone to particularly high infestations of flies therefore workers and residents can benefit from the use of UV insect control.

Areas that have large open access points that are frequently left open are at risk of high volumes of flying insects. Many flying insects can erode packaging and fabrics so these locations require protection methods for the produce and workers.

Food related businessesGoverned by legislation, food manufacturing, preparation and storage areas should be protected from flying insects using a combination of flykilling units, fly screens and doors as required. All food businesses must put in place ‘food safety management procedures’ based on the principles of HACCP. To find out more about legislation required for food business please visit www.food.gov.uk.

Glueboard Fly Killer units that are open in design and therefore emit the maximum amount of effective UV light are recommended for these types of locations.

Fly Killer Training

In addition to adhering to food hygiene legislation for preparation and storage areas, there are a number of other customer facing areas which may benefit from flying insect control.

Decorative units can be discreetly positioned in lobbies, bars and restaurants to ensure that customers are free from irritating flying pests in all areas of the hotel.

Food hygiene legislation covers the areas that are concealed from the customer, however it is the front-of-house area is where the customer judges the business on hygiene and cleanliness.

To ensure that customers are kept free from pests, discreet decorative units offer an ideal option, they ensure that flying insect are dealt with quickly and quietly, allowing your customers to enjoy their experience.

FAQs

What is the ‘coverage’?Flykiller’s are given a coverage measurement according to industry standards relating to the light output of the unit. This really only offers an indication as studies clearly show that UV light declines in its attractiveness the further away the flying insect is from the source. Therefore for maximum protection use a larger unit wherever possible. Of course space and budget is sometimes an issue that’s why we offer a range of units that will be suitable to cover different areas.

What is ‘shatterproofing’? Shatterproof tubes are used in ‘high risk areas’ where breakage could lead to contamination. All CZP flykiller’s can be shatter-proofed where required. Examples of sensitive areas would include food preparation and assembly areas. Shatterproof tubes MUST be installed in areas operating a ‘glass free policy’. The Fluorinated Polymer (FEP) material used for all our sleeving is designed specifically for optical transmission and allows 97% of effective UV light to pass through the coating. As a result, the maximum possible amount of useful UV irradiance passes through the sleeving to effectively attract insects.

With only 3% of the irradiance being absorbed into the material, the structural integrity of the sleeving is maintained for the full 12 month life of the tube, preventing discolouring and ensuring all glass shards are retained in the event of a breakage.Additionally, all our shatterproof tubes conform to the IEC61549 ‘Fragment Retention’ standard for areas where this is considered appropriate.

FAQs

How often should I change my tubes and why?We recommend that UV tubes are changed every 6 months, but definatelt by 12 months to ensure maximum efficacy. The levels of UV produced by fluorescent tubes deteriorates rapidly throughout the life of the tube. Whilst the tube will continue to glow blue or green indefinitely, after approximately 8,000 hours the amount of useful UV (which humans cannot see) drops to a level where it is no longer attractive to flying insects. As a result, UV tubes must be replaced annually to ensure they remain effective in producing useful levels of UV. This replacement cycle is typically undertaken just before the peak insect season, (March/April withinEurope) to ensure the flykiller is producing the maximum amount of UV throughout the critical insect season.

How often should I change my glueboards? We recommend that glueboards are changed every 6 weeks, to prevent the glue from drying out over a longer period of time. In low infestation areas and cooler, dust free environments they may last up to 12 weeks. Dry or dusty environments may require a more frequent change as atmospheric debris may become attached to the board.

CZP Fly Killers

The following guide allows you to assess the suitability for different locations for example. Use the guide to select the required flykiller to cover the required site.

WHY CZP FLY KILLERS?

UK MADE – excellent workmanship and quality control. High quality materials and accountability. Promotes UK manufacturing and reduces our environmental impact. The best design and manufacturing available - all our major competitors produce their products almost entirely in Asia.

OWN BRANDED ECOLITE / ULTRALITE TUBES - tubes that retain their effectiveness for longer (15,000 as opposed to 9,000 hours) and have a higher light output while consuming less energy. This means the units perform better over a longer period reducing waste and servicing.

SAME TUBE FITTING - CZP units all use the same tube fitting and require no starters or chokes. This makes servicing quicker and reduces waste and the number of components that require disposal at the end of the unit’s life. It also means our customers only have to stock one tube.

EXAMPLE

Large, Industrial food processing facility. The walls are far apart so the central areas of the rooms are not covered by wall mounted units.

• Needs to be glueboard unit, as it is a sensitive area where insect detection is extra important.

• Needs to suitable for food processing areas. These are ultra sensitive areas where contamination can cause widespread problems, so maximum wattage is required.

• Needs to be suspendable as wall mounting will not over central areas.

ViroTech 80 Suspended version or ViroTrap 80 would be suitable for this location.
