The Smart City ProjectsChristchurchBuilding Capability – investigates Smart City initialisation challenges in organisations, and the information and engagement requirements to enable Smart City innovation and investment across local and central government.

Flexible Sensing Platform – uses a common IT ‘stack’ in which all sensors are able to plug into irrespective of type, quantity and location (a new instance replicated off the Wellington City platform).

Smart City Backbone – uses a range of sensors to monitor air quality, noise, CCTV footage, and so on. This provides data to city managers to inform future investment decisions (a new instance replicated off the Wellington City platform).

Christchurch City Instance Initiatives – prioritises a number of options for the Christchurch rebuild according to greatest benefits.

CCTV Multimodal Transport and Pedestrian Counting – measures movement around the city and infrastructure utilisation through time.Wellington Smart City Stakeholders – uses Smart City technologies to inform responses to certain circumstances (such as breaking glass in Cuba Mall) – and information to inform response decision where required (for example a Police callout).

Auckland3D+ Asset and Non-Asset Information Management – applies a visualisation model of assets within Auckland City to suburban examples.Wynyard Quarter Smart – investigates a community interface with multiple stakeholders and the outcomes that a wider Smart City initiative might look like in a specific zone or precinct.

Kite GatewayThe Kite Gateway collects and consolidates all data received from all sensors within proximity. Sensors transmit data through direct connection to the Kite device or through connections with other sensors, leveraging mesh networking.

Cloud / Big DataKite backhauls sensor data to a city’s chosen cloud and analytics platform, such as NEC’s Cloud City Operations Centre. Data is also shared with appropriate content management systems, as well as citizens and local businesses through an API.

Waste SensorsInstalled in waste receptacles, waste sensors measure rubbish levels and inform a waste management company when to empty bins, saving thousands in diesel costs and reducing environmental impact.

Parking SensorsRecessed into parks, parking sensors share data for city traffic management, city asset management and inform citizens of vacant parks in a city.

Kite MoteA Kite Mote is an easy-to-install sensor which leverages battery or solar power, removing the need for any civil engineering. This example is measuring air quality at a street level and relaying data back to the Kite Gateway through mesh networking.

Streetlight SensorsSensors detect light levels and pedestrian proximity to automatically adjust brightness, saving a city power and environmental costs.

If working together there are clearly public value opportunities which the wider public sector ought to adopt,

then……...

Our Challenge to the

Wider Public Sector

Page 83: Haydn Read, Programme Director, Smart City Coalition, LINZ

What are the undiscovered institutional arrangements which let the wider public sector share in / or enable these types of capabilities?

In a harmonised way?

….and in an ongoing way

Page 84: Haydn Read, Programme Director, Smart City Coalition, LINZ

We have learnt we can work together;

What are the undiscovered institutional arrangements which let the wider public sector share in / or enable these types of capabilities?

In a harmonised way?

….and in an ongoing way

……all in order to become a

Smart Nation
