Challenge Statement Resilience How can we make urban neighborhoods more resilient and affordable using advanced materials and systems?
In scope out of scope
In scope: Simple and advanced
materials available today, structure design
strategies at the building element, unit or community level, direct and indirect methods, including
incorporation above the building code
Out: Completely theoretical materials, community
participation models
Out: Improvement
outside of resilience purposes
Expected Outcomes
Identify the gaps: Challenging & relevant
Co- create ideas/ solutions: Holistic and realizable
Action plan: Make a plan for sustainable investment to increase resilience Specify time frame, location/ area, roles and responsibilities and personal role/ commitment

Red Hook is endangered by flooding, storms, ...
Virtually all of Redhook is in NYC Evacuation Zone for flooding (Zone 1).
What kind of products can help optimize resources and contribute to low impact from the built and natural environment?
FM Global and UL listed assemblies with various approvals for hail resistance and fire durability. Miami-Dade County Wind Uplift ratings may also be available because the spray foam system glues the insulation and roofing system directly together.
The EIFS wall system may meet the Miami-Dade County requirements for hurricane resistance.
FEMA Flood (damage) resistant materials are provided when utilizing the closed cell foam insulation and polyurea coating at or below grade.
Using closed cell spray foam insulation provides an air barrier, superior thermal insulation, and racking strength.
A coated spray foam exterior roofing system is a hail resistant and FEMA Flood (damage) resistant material.
Using polyurethane foam insulation in doors, racking strength, impact and flood resistance are provided.
The foam core door may meet the Miami-Dade County requirements for hurricane resistance.
Using Polyurethane Reaction Injection Molding (RIM) around skylights, racking strength, impact and flood resistance are provided.
Sandwich Plate System (SPS) absorbs energy and maintains structural integrity.
Flood proof Polyurea coating
Other material examples

With closed cell spray foam on the underside of the roof deck, this FEMA flood resistant material provides a secondary water barrier.
Add strength to roof diaphragm by using closed cell foam and the filet method to adhere the roof sheathing to the roof rafter framing, meeting Miami-Dade wind uplift requirements.
Racking strength and FEMA Flood Resistant material are provided when utilizing closed cell foam insulation in walls.
Add strength to the gable walls, increase uplift capacity, provide an air and moisture barrier, and limit wind driven rain entry by using closed-cell spray foam to create a sealed attic assembly.
FEMA Flood (damage) resistant materials are provided when utilizing the closed cell foam insulation and polyurea coating at or below grade, under floors, etc.
When using polyurethane foam insulation in doors, racking strength, impact and flood resistance may be provided.
The foam core door meets the Miami-Dade County requirements for hurricane resistance.
When using Polyurethane Reaction Injection Molding (RIM) around skylights, racking strength, impact and flood resistance are provided.
Exterior Insulation and Finish System (EIFS) assemblies may meet the Miami-Dade County requirements for hurricane resistance.
Key question
Imagine: The federal government has offered to match $ for $ local government, community and private initiatives that increase the resilience of Red Hook while improving the long term quality of life. Put forward a series of proposals for the most impactful ideas to win matching funds
Key considerations
Build new? Renovate existing?
Scale?
• Shape • Materials • Elevation
Build Differently?
Build Strategically? • Protection
• Responsiveness
• Element (e.g., wall) • Unit (e.g., house) • Community (e.g., block)
