Waste Collection Three separate chambers in a dustbin should be installed throughout Silchar city which will not cost much and is feasible.

Current method being used New dustbins containing 3 chambers for Plastics, Glass and Compost.

Advantages: Few people will not follow the instruction but there will quite of them who will understand and help the workers to segregate among various types of waste.

Waste Segregation

Garbage truck unloading waste Segregation of waste into Plastics, Glass, Compost is done by workers with proper care.

Segregation of waste at the source by the local people is relatively low but proof of 10% rate was found at Metro cities. So, making 3 different chambers (Plastic, Glass, Compost) will help to achieve at least 7% rate.

Waste recycling

Glass recycling : Crush the glass and remelt at elevated temperature which can be reshaped into new glass container. Every metric ton (1,000 kg) of waste glass recycled into new items saves 315 kgs of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere.

Plastic recycling : It can be done using pyrolysis or depolymerisation. Melting plastic at 430°C in absence of oxygen leads to formation of liquid fuel.

Compost recycling : Through anaerobic digestion, compost can be converted to biogas and remaining sludge can be used as fertilizers. Cheapest method of recycling.

Waste Disposal

Burning : The waste products which cannot be recycled may be burnt which in turn may be a source of energy through combustion. Landfilling : Remaining should be dump in a landfill and should be covered with soil. Landfill should be far from human contact as it produces harmful gases like Methane.
