Safety Tips For Trick-Or-Treating This Halloween

In Naperville, we are blessed with high safety and the best police force monitoring our communities on October 31st. Still, this blog doesnt just have a Naperville audience, so as your little superheroes, zombies, witches, ghosts, goblins and ghouls get ready for a candy takeover by trick or treating in your community no matter where you live, its always a good idea for you to remain vigilant when theyre visiting different neighborhoods.

With Halloween just around the corner, here are some safety tips to give you peace of mind and allow you to enjoy your evening:

Know the neighborhoods. Be familiar with where you allow your kids to go whether its in your own neighborhood or somewhere else.

2. Choose bright costumes. Bright costumes and reflective stickers are both fun and great ways to keep your kids in sight.

3. Practice common courtesy. Be respectful of going only to those homes where porch lights are on to signify that trick-or-treaters are welcome. Sometimes it just means that people want their privacy. And while you are walking from house-to-house, theres really no rush to get ahead of others as you get to each house on your route, so take your turn and be patient.

4. Chaperone younger children. Leaving children alone to walk the streets in the dark is not advisable! Not only is it best for children of any age to be in larger groups so that no child is ever left to walk the streets alone, having your supervision is a must to keep them from getting lost, abducted, or struck by a car.

5. Instruct trick-or-treaters to avoid eating what they collect until they come home. All Halloween candy your child brings home should be inspected carefully to ensure that it is safe to eat. If anything is unwrapped, or looks tampered in any way, throw it out. Its also a great way to ensure that children with allergies are not in danger of eating anything that could cuase a reaction.

6. Follow all pedestrian rules while trick-or-treating. In Naperville, there are plenty of sidewalks in the neighborhoods where trick-or-treaters will be going door-to-door. Children should avoid walking on roadways if at all possible, and make sure the way is clear before walking and not darting across the street.

7. Bring a flashlight. Having at least one flashlight among you but preferably one per person will keep you and your family and friends from tripping on uneven ground in the dark, while alerting motorists and other pedestrians to your presence, especially if your costumes arent light colored or easy to see in the dark. Glow sticks are also a fun addition to any kids arsenal!

8. Plan to go home before 8 p.m. Although Chicago and several other suburbs have start and end times for trick-or-treating (anywhere from 3 or 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.), Naperville doesnt have set times. Instead, the city recommends that you dont stay out past 8 p.m.

9. Report any suspicious behavior. Teach your kids to call 911 in an emergency. If you see anything that looks suspicious, the Naperville Police Department advises the public to not hesitate to call 9-1-1. Additionally, the police force will be out patrolling neighborhoods to help keep everyone safe.

10. Be sure your kids do not approach any vehicles. Occupied or otherwise, make this clear to them.

The best thing you can do is sharing this fun experience with your kids. If theyre over at a friends house and you are not with them, make sure a responsible adult whom you trust escorts them.

We wish you a fun, safe and happy Halloween!
