The Importance of Gutters
By Canopy Construction LLC
Compared to other aspects of the home, gutters are not particularly noticeable and may not seem especially
important. Gutters, however, are responsible for properly channeling water away from the home and play a critical role in its structural integrity. If not drained properly, water can damage the roof and walls, leading to bigger problems
such as rot, mold, and leaks. Gutters also reduce or prevent ground erosion and harm to landscaping and can
help keep insects from entering crawlspaces and the basement. Therefore, a functioning gutter system, properly
maintained, is critical to the condition of the home.
Weather, debris, and animals commonly cause gutters to separate from the fascia board, or the piece of wood
joining the gutter to the roof. This separation often occurs incrementally over an extended period of time, meaning that homeowners should check gutters at least twice a
year. A gutter check is best performed by walking around the outside of the house and sight-checking for leaks and overflows. If there are leaks due to separation, renailing
the gutter to the fascia board or opting for longer nails for a stronger grip can fix them. If there are holes in the gutter itself, applying roofing adhesive and a sealant patch are
the ideal repair.
