INTROSetting a goal is like writing out a map, you must have a destination and key points to

guide you to get there. At the beginning of the semester I had no clear vision of how my future

should end but after considering all of my skills and knowledge, I now know that a career in

Human Resources is the path that I want to take. My long-term goal is to have a human resource

management career at Texas Tech University. I will achieve that goal by achieving short term

goals that include networking, gaining experience through an internship, and becoming a

graduate.

LONG-TERM GOALSetting a long-term goal for myself has been more difficult for me than I expected.

However, after taking advantage of the class content, I now know that my long-term goal is to

have a career in Human Resource Management at Texas Tech University. At the beginning of

the semester I mentioned that all I wanted was a career that I was good at and that I enjoyed.

Though that continues to be true, I now add that I would like to develop talent and motivate

others to achieve their goals. Realistically I will be able to reach my goal within three to four

years. I have recently learned that success does not have a timeframe and is dependent of my

goals and how I go about achieving them. I have spent my college career seeking a job that will

pay well and that is considered to be difficult so that I can receive recognition for my hard work.

In this course we talked about knowing our needs and wants and I have had the entire semester to

really access what those are for me. I now know that what I need is a good work-life balance and

to have a job that I like. This is important to me because I know that if there is not a balance I

tend to become resistant to doing my work because I am thinking about my family. I know that it

is hard to separate the two and if I am unable to then I must have a job that I really enjoy so that

Page 3: Yadira Torres Undergraduate Goals

it is worth my time away from home. I also know that among my wants is to have a job in

Lubbock so that I can stay close to my family.

SHORT- TERM GOALSI have three short-term goals to help me to achieve a career in Human Resources that I

want. Building a network, gaining experience through an internship, and becoming a graduate

are the main steps to guide me in attaining my long-term goal. In the past, I have always worked

and attend classes full time but this semester I decided to dedicate my time into my schoolwork.

That is the best decision that I have made in a long time because it has added incredible value to

me as a professional. I could argue that school is the fastest way to gain knowledge and

experience in a career. This semester I have learned how to effectively build professional

relationships and how to retain them and make them valuable to you. Building a strong network

is the first thing that I set out to do and I feel that I have expanded my network the fastest way

possible which is by communicating your ideas with others. I am currently part of two tech

organizations and have also established lasting relationships with some of my professors. The

Tech Society for Human Resource Management is the first organization that I joined and it has

allowed me to have access to individuals with a career in Human Resources. Thanks to the

meetings in SHRM I have met people from United Supermarkets, Chik-fil-a and Target. I also

joined the Tech Society for Interdisciplinary Students where I was appointed as Secretary. I am

glad that I joined because it will allow me to motivate others, retain members and recruit which

is exactly what human resources is about. Becoming more involved and making the most of my

time left at Texas Tech is what I initially set out to do this semester and I feel that I have

effectively done so. Getting an internship that helps me gain experience in my chosen field is

what I am currently working towards. After the informational interview assignment I learned that

there is an internship course and I will be taking it in the fall. According to Dr. McCourt, the

Page 4: Yadira Torres Undergraduate Goals

YADIRA TORRES 4

course will teach me what type of information to seek while doing the internship and how to

increase the chances of being offered a full time position. The last short-term goal that I have set

is to graduate. I graduate May of 2017 and before then I hope to have accomplished enough to be

proud of my time here at Texas Tech.

CONNECTION

Now that I have an idea of what my goal is, I know how my three concentrations can contribute

to my overall goal. My three concentrations are General Business, Organizational Leadership,

and Human Resources. I remember having my first University Studies advising appointment and

thinking “wow this advisor really knows my interests and my strengths” I didn’t take into

account that she had looked at my transcript and had seen all of my best classes to design a major

fit for me. What was interesting was that the classes that I was most successful in, all had to do

with leadership. After leaving that appointment, I felt that I had found the best place for me and

that it summed up all of my interests perfectly. After working as a retail supervisor I have found

that I like certain aspects of the job more than others. I like to develop talent and help others to

discover their hidden strengths. I also like to interview and hire people, I believe that your “gut”

can tell you a lot about a person, I love the feeling of hiring someone and seeing them succeed.

Another part of the job that I have always enjoyed is taking advantage of all of the resources

provided to me and using them in a way that benefits not only me, but my team. In other words, I

like to follow and enforce policies to later show others how they benefit the team. Lastly, I liked

to work in a team because I believe that in order to be successful one must work well with others.

Through the careers course I learned that a career is not in the title but in the description. All

along I have been seeking a title where I meet all of the qualifications listed. I now know that the

career that I am in must have flexibility and it should leave room for creativity as well as

Page 5: Yadira Torres Undergraduate Goals

YADIRA TORRES 5

interpretation. When going into an interview, it is because I meet the qualifications the employer

must be open to me expressing all of my skills and goals. There must be a balance between what

you know and how that will allow you to learn. I can see how my three concentrations act as the

guide to my thought process about a career because it allows me to communicate effectively with

others and to work well in teams.
