TEST 1: ASK FOR CERTIFICATE.

• This is the first and one of the most important steps if you’re buying a jewelry piece that includes a diamond, this certificate should come from a grading authority, such GIA, PGGL, AGSL, LGP or an independent appraiser, which must be affiliate with a professional organization. Nevertheless you have to keep in mind that the certificate is just an opinion from a person who may has experience with diamonds or not.

TEST 2: LOOK THROUGH IT• Diamonds sharply bend the light that passes through

them. Glass and quartz bend light less, even when they've been cut nicely.

Here are some test to identify a fake diamond:

• If the diamond is not mounted, turn it upside down and place it on a piece of paper with letters or drawings. If you can read the print through the stone or even see distorted smudges, then it probably isn't a diamond.

• Draw a small dot with a pen on a piece of white paper. Place your unmounted diamond over the center of the dot. Look directly down on it and if your stone is not a diamond, you will see a circular reflection in the stone.

TEST 3: WEIGH.

• Cubic zirconia (which are generally sold as diamonds) weighs approximately 55% more than diamonds for the same shape and size. Use a carat or gram scale to compare the stone in question to a real diamond.

TEST 4: UV LIGHT TEST.

• Many diamonds will show blue fluorescence under an ultra violet, so the presence of a medium to strong blue confirms that it is real. If you see a very slight green, yellow, or gray fluorescence under ultraviolet light, it may be fake.

TEST 5: HEAT PROBE

• Real stones disperse heat quickly and they won't heat up with the probe. This takes about 30 seconds and is often done free of charge. It also doesn't hurt the stone the way some other ways of testing will.

TEST 6: USE A JEWELER'S LOUPE TO INSPECT THE DIAMOND

• Mined diamonds usually have small imperfections or inclusions that can be seen this way. Fake diamonds does not have these imperfections.

• Nevertheless is very important to check with other tests because lab-grown diamonds usually don't have imperfections either.
