The IPDE MethodIdentifyWhile driving you must constantly scan the driving environment to identify real and potential hazards.

Predict

For real hazards such as an oncoming vehicle in your lane of travel, PREDICT whether the vehicle will continue toward your car and, if so, what consequences the oncoming cars path of travel might involve.

Your prediction might require re-assessment if another hazard -- such as a child running into the street -- is identified between you and the oncoming vehicle.Decide

Based on your prediction, you must DECIDE what driver action you will take (accelerate, steer, decelerate, or a combination) to avoid the hazard. This requires an understanding of the time and space necessary to implement your maneuver.

Before you implement an avoidance maneuver, be certain that your chosen escape path is still available and that you can leave the roadway if you have to.ExecuteAs you approach the hazard, you should:

Verify that traffic control devices are working correctlyBe aware that other drivers may disregard traffic control devices. As you pass the hazard, leave enough room in front of you to ensure a safe cushion for maneuverabilityUse your foot to cover the brake as you proceed. This speeds your the reaction time if the situation changes. Your skill in executing avoidance maneuvers will increase with experience.

Once youve decided on a course of action, EXECUTE your maneuver.

RepeatIDENTIFYPREDICTDECIDEEXECUTERemain aware and continually scan your environment. In a worst case scenario, you want to be prepared to take whatever action may be necessary to avoid a crash by ensuring that you have the minimum stopping or maneuvering distance available if necessary.Road Test

Watch the video clip and IDENTIFY the hazards in the driving environment, then critique the drivers performance in PREDICTING, DECIDING and EXECUTING avoidance maneuvers. Post your critique to the discussion board under the IPDE Practice thread by Wednesday, and respond to at least two other student critiques by Saturday. Also include how mastery learning was used in this lesson.
