DESCRIPTION

KMA is an admixture for cementitious mortar. It contains Kryton’s unique Krystol® technology that reacts with the cementitious materials in the mortar to form hydration crystals. These needle-like crystals block the capillary pores and micro-cracks within the mortar to dramatically reduce permeability and water absorption of mortar rendering over brick, block and other masonry walls.

Interesting Facts About Water

Approximately 70% of the human body is made of water

About 75% of the Earth’s surface is covered in water

Without water, there would be no life on Earth

Krystol Mortar Admixture (KMATM)

Chemical admixture for cementitious mortar

Specialty chemicals that react with cementitious materials in mortar to form hydration crystals

Needle-like crystals dramatically reduce permeability & water absorption of mortar rendering over brick, block and other masonry walls

Page 9: Krystol Mortar Admixture Presentation at World of Concrete 2011

Key Benefits of KMA™

Provides water resistance without requiring a surface applied sealer

Reduces overall cost

Improves adhesion

Improves durability

Improves resistance to cracking

Page 10: Krystol Mortar Admixture Presentation at World of Concrete 2011

Typical Applications of KMA™

Damp-proof mortar rendering on brick, block and other masonry walls

Reduce permeability of plaster, stucco, and thin topping mixes

Rendering Mortar

A render is a mortar generally made up of cement, fine aggregate, water, and sometimes lime or a plasticizer

Applied to the face of a brick or block wall surface, usually in two or more coats, to form the finish of the wall

Page 12: Krystol Mortar Admixture Presentation at World of Concrete 2011

Other Applications for KMA™

Protect masonry mortar• Mortar between bricks

& block assembled into a wall

Reduce permeability of concrete bricks and blocks when they are manufacturedMost beneficial when used in brick and block walls that will not be covered by a render

Application of KMA™Application Instruction 110

Page 15: Krystol Mortar Admixture Presentation at World of Concrete 2011

KMA™ Application: Surface Prep

Surface must be clean and free of dirt, oil, or loose debris

Strongly recommended that the surfaces be “saturated” with clean water prior to applying rendering to achieve improved performance in adhesion, durability and reduced cracking

Page 16: Krystol Mortar Admixture Presentation at World of Concrete 2011

KMA™ Application: Mixing

1. KMA is a dry powder that is added directly to the mortar during mixing

2. Dose KMA at 2% by weight of cement—1 kg KMA per 50 kg cement.

3. Most KMA mixes will require less water than usual

Page 17: Krystol Mortar Admixture Presentation at World of Concrete 2011

KMA™ Application: Mixing

4. Can be added at any time during the batching process

a) plastic properties may vary with the time of addition depending on the mix proportions and site conditions. Adjust the mixing sequence as necessary to optimize the mix for your application.

5. Allow KMA to thoroughly mix at medium/high speed for a minimum of 2 minutes or until the admixture is fully incorporated

Page 18: Krystol Mortar Admixture Presentation at World of Concrete 2011

KMA™ Application: Install Mortar

1. Install mortar as normal. a) For increased damp-proofing

performance apply mortar up to 5 cm in 2 or more layers (see ASTM C926).

2. Continue occasional mixing as the material is being installed. Discard any material that shows signs of stiffening or setting—do not wet-up by adding water.

Page 19: Krystol Mortar Admixture Presentation at World of Concrete 2011

KMA™ Application: Curing

Proper curing is essential to achieve the performance and benefits

Wet curing with a fog mist spray, sprinkler or wet burlap for 3 to 7 days is recommended. Protect fresh applications from wind and direct sunlight.
