First utilized in India 3000 years ago, mala beads have roots in Hinduism, Buddhism

and yoga. The term ‘mala’ is a Sanskrit word for

“meditation garland.” Malas have 108 beads, made out of seeds,

sandalwood or rosewood, plus one guru stone

The Guru stone symbolizes gratitude and our connection to the divine. It is a way to say thank-you to all the spiritual teachers

who have helped us on our path to enlightenment.

The mala is held with gentleness and respect, generally in the left hand.

One bead is counted for each recitation of the mantra or affirmation, beginning with the first bead after the "guru" bead- the larger, more decorative bead at the mala's end.

The first bead is held between the index finger and thumb, and with each count the thumb pulls another bead in place over the index finger.

Some Mala Basics:

Mantra is a mind projection created in either a spoken or mental manner. Mantras can be a word, phrase, syllable or sound. (I am love, Om, etc.)When reciting a mantra with a mala meditation, you recite the entire mantra on each bead (not one bead per word).  You can also use affirmations with your mala, repeating the affirmation with each bead.  The recitations can be done silently, as a whisper, in song or spoken out loud.

Malas are made from a variety of types of beads.  Integrating gemstone therapy into your meditation helps to enhance its results (chakra stimulation/alignment).  There are many online resources with information about the healing properties of different types of gemstones.  When choosing a mala, it is helpful to choose stones that focus on the results you are looking for in your meditation. (ie. rose quartz=self love)

Yes. Absolutely. You’d think if you’re silently repeating a mantra your mind would be able to stay put, but it simply isn’t true. It’s really no different than if you’re counting or focusing on your breath… your mind will wander. Don’t beat yourself up, it’s to be expected.

That’s what your mala is for, to help remind you to come back. Come back to the mala, come back to your mantra. No matter what kind of meditation you’re doing, that really is the “work”… to keep coming back, gently without judgment.

Will my mind still wander?
