We handle a wide range of construction projects for the Broadcast, Telecommunications, Media and Satellite, Utilities, Renewables and Radar sectors; including new build, civils works, electrical and structural engineering, refurbishment and maintenance.

Our portfolio includes the design and build of new buildings, foundation strengthening and retaining walls, cable management systems, installations for gas extraction on landfill sites, feasibility studies, office and studio refurbishment, installation of bio waste plants, upgrading and renewing tanks on petroleum sites and various structural builds including radomes, towers, masts and high security upgrades.

Infinis LimitedExtension of an existing operational generation plant

Location: Highmoor, OldhamTime scale: 16 weeks

The Project:

Infinis is one of the UK’s leading generators of renewable power, operating a growing portfolio of landfill gas, onshore wind and hydro plants across the UK. Chalcroft Special Projects have worked with Infinis to provide enabling works to support their growing number of generators and transformers.

Infinis has a biogas site at Highmoor, one of the highest landfill sites in the country. Chalcroft constructed concrete bases within an operational compound, together with the provision of infrastructure works, mechanical and electrical installations to double the output of an existing generation plant, and installation of gas pipework and lubrication systems.

Chalcroft’s experience of working in extreme weather conditions ensured the unique demands placed on the construction process were overcome, particularly as the majority of the work was carried out during the winter months. Safe access had to be maintained for the client’s

operations staff at all times and constant liaison was essential to ensure the works were completed with minimum disruption.

case studiesArqivaNew building and refurbishment works for the digital television switchover

Location: UK nationwideTime scale: Over a 5 year period

The Project:

Leading communications infrastructure and media services company, Arqiva, provide much of the infrastructure behind television, radio, satellite and wireless communications in the UK. The company managed the largest broadcast engineering project in UK history with the successful completion of the switchover from analogue to digital in 2012. Chalcroft Special Projects provided the civils and building works for this major project throughout the UK, across more than 30 sites from The Orkneys to the Isle of Wight.

One of the builds included work at Emley Moor in Yorkshire, one of Arqiva’s major transmitting stations running a 24 hour operation. Chalcroft Special Projects constructed a new building and refurbished an existing building for the new digital equipment. The tight programme of 14 weeks also included the construction of concrete bases for generators, cooling equipment, 100m of trenching around existing sensitive services and overhead gantry supports for the television feeds, all completed without disruption to Arqiva’s day to day operations.

Work at Emley Moor included the construction of a bespoke heavy duty cable gantry to support the new main transition feeders from the CU building to the concrete tower base.

Chalcroft Special Projects also erected new buildings at Llandonna and Rowridge, including the foundations for the new digital TV transmitter, completing the project ahead of schedule.

Virgin MediaCommunications room and generator building

Location: NorthamptonTime scale: 12 weeks

The Project:

Chalcroft Special Projects built an internal Communications Room within Virgin Media’s service centre at Northampton. Work for the digital communications provider included the installation of a raised access floor, fire suppression, air conditioning, cable basket runs, decoration, installation of new internal fire doors and external security doors. The team also removed the roof of the generator building, to enable the generators to be swapped out, re-constructing the roof on completion.

Alan Dick & Co LimitedRadome install for flight simulator for BAE Systems

Location: RAF North Luffenham, RutlandTime scale: 16 weeks

The Project:

Chalcroft Special Projects built the foundations and double skinned dome, and prepared the interior for the flight simulator equipment. The dome is used to train pilots with its 360 degree panoramic view from the cockpit.

ArqivaSatellite dish base and build for Paksat/TXi

Location: Chalfont Grove, BuckinghamshireTime scale: 3 weeks

The Project:

Chalcroft Special Projects carried out the design and build of the satellite base foundations and continued to manage the site whilst the dish was built and commissioned.

We always aim to deliver excellence in engineering, and Chalcroft’s reputation for quality and reliability made it the natural choice to help us complete the project. I am very pleased with the outcome.

Storage Solutions UK LtdNew foundations for BP fuel tank

Location: Hamble-le-Rice, HampshireTime scale: 9 weeks, in 4 phases over 6 months

The Project:

Storage Solutions UK Ltd provide tank cleaning and maintenance for oil and fuel companies. Chalcroft Special Projects are their preferred civils contractor, working with them to provide safe access to the tanks to enable them to carry out their work.

One such project was at BP Hamble. An existing tank was raised by Chalcroft to enable Storage Solutions to increase its capacity. A new foundation was required to take the increased load of the tank. Chalcroft Special Projects elevated the tank using jack legs whilst they constructed the new foundation beneath it.

Similar projects have included providing access to underground tanks to enable maintenance work to be carried out.

Location: NationwideTime scale: Over a 3 year period

The Project:

Arqiva are a leading communications infrastructure company in the UK, managing broadcast and telecommunications sites all around the country. Security of this vital equipment is essential and Chalcroft Special Projects are engaged in this nationwide project to provide security upgrades.

Babcock International Group plcInstallation of pylon foundations

Location: Berwick-upon-Tweed, Scottish BordersTime scale: 6 weeks

The Project:

Babcock is the UK’s leading engineering support services organisation, working in the defence, energy, telecommunications, transport and education sectors. As part of a two-year programme to supply power to a Scottish Power electricity substation from an offshore wind farm, Babcock called in Chalcroft Special Projects to help with their construction programme.

Chalcroft installed two temporary bypass pylon foundations within a six week timeframe, followed by the construction of foundations for two permanent pylons.

Thales UKHigh-security civils and fencing project at Manston Airport

Location: Manston Airport, KentTime scale: 8 Weeks

The Project:

Thales is a worldwide leader in the defence, security, space, aerospace and ground transportation sectors. Chalcroft Special Projects is a preferred civils contractor for Thales UK and constructed a new compound, tower and cabin base, including trenching and duct work, to facilitate the installation of a new radar tower and associated equipment.

The high-security project was completed three weeks ahead of schedule. Chalcroft Special Projects has carried out similar works at various regional airports across the UK.

ArqivaRefurbishment of a vacant office in Paris

Location: Paris, FranceTime scale: 5 weeks

The Project:

When called upon at short notice by Arqiva, Chalcroft Special Projects responded to ensure they were still able to move into their new Paris offices on time.

Chalcroft managed the complete project, utilising their in-house teams from the UK and dealing with French Building Control. The scope of works included construction of stud walls to alter the layout, supply and installation of glazed partitions, new finished doors, acoustic and fire retardant materials above the existing suspended ceiling, in order to compartmentalise

individual rooms. Work also included the installation of power and lighting, extension of fire alarm system, alterations to air conditioning system, fit out of kitchen, all decoration and flooring, installation of furniture and promotional displays.
