ODOROUS HOUSE ANTS/SUGAR ANTS

• Odorous house ants can include a wide variety of ants and range from as small as 2 mm to as large as 15 mm. If you’re seeing winged ants, there’s a good chance you’ve stumbled upon a odorous house ant infestation. They tend to especially become active in the dusk and evening hours

MICE, VOLES/GOPHERS

MICE

• Mice can spread diseases like Hantavirus and Salmonella, but that’s just the beginning. In fact, mice can actually carry as many as 200 human pathogens

• One house mouse produces between 40 and 100 droppings per day

• Mice can jump a foot into the air, allowing them to easily climb up onto kitchen counters or into pantries to access food

VOLES/GOPHERS

• A vole is a rodent and looks much like a mouse, only with shorter tails, they are dark brown in color and about five inches in length

• Voles make networks of well defined, visible surface tunnels across the lawn with golf ball sized holes near the damage being made.

• Most voles are plant-eaters, feeding on grass and perennial-flower roots, seeds and bulbs

• Gophers are excellent burrowers; their tunnels can range from a few inches to a few feet in depth and several hundred feet in length

• Herbivores eating a variety of weeds, grasses, crops and plants

EARWIGS

• Earwigs are a common household pest and are unique with the way they look. They are easily recognizable by their pinchers located at the ends of their abdomen, which are generally harmless to humans. Earwigs will actually use the pinchers when sparing with other earwigs. They are dark reddish-brown, have light brown legs, and are about 5/8 inch long

• Earwigs are attracted to moisture it is important to eliminate high moisture areas. You may not see a lot of them during the day, as they like to come out during night

• Eliminate damp moist areas especially around crawl spaces, faucets, and along the foundations. Make sure rain gutters and spouts direct water away from the house foundation and doesn’t start to pool

ELM SEED/BOX ELDER BUG

ELM SEED BUG

• Can live a long time, typically 3 to 5 years which can be a problem when you’re battling against them

• Migrate away from the cold and extremely hot temperatures, which means winter and summer is when they well be seeking shelter

• Can be found around gutters, windows, door frames, under siding and it will only be a matter of time before they make their way into the structure

• Will release a unpleasant sent to mark territory

BOX ELDER BUG

• Bodies of box elder bugs are black in color and are marked by red lines along the thorax and sides. Their wings are flat and red. They measure between 11 to 14 mm long

• Make their homes in Box Elder, Maple and Ash trees during the warmer seasons and find their way into buildings and homes seeking shelter for the winter

• Adult bugs live and breed on the leaves of box elder trees, laying their eggs in spring

• They feed on soft parts of box elder trees, including leaves, flowers and new twigs

WASPS/YELLOW JACKETS/HORNETS

• Wasps get their name due to the construction of their nests. Paper wasp nests are made with their saliva and combined with plant material and really do look as if to be made from paper. Their nests include numerous compartments, within which wasps lay their eggs and raise their young. These nests typically do not have an outer shell making the cells of the nest visible. It somewhat resembles an umbrella and depending where you are may also known as umbrella wasps. They love to build their nests in sheltered areas, such as door frames, window sills, around outdoor light fixtures and the eaves of houses

• Now even though they are beneficial, nests should not be permitted to develop in or near the home structure. If you’ve every been stung by a wasp you know that stings from paper wasps are extremely painful and may cause serious reactions to people who are allergic to the venom

• Yellow jackets and hornets are very similar to paper wasps except yellow jackets are smaller and hornets are bigger than wasps. Another way to tell the difference between them is that yellow jackets and hornets build an enclosed nest where you cant see the cells

BED BUGS

• Bed bugs are small and resemble an apple seed shape

• Itchy red bites: the appearance of flat, red welts in small clusters, zigzag lines or straight rows is a key sign of bed bugs

• Bed bugs tend to feed on exposed skin rather (than crawling their way up your pant leg) such as arms and shoulders, which some may leave uncovered while sleeping.

• A telltale sign of bed bugs are small brown spots or streaks that may be dried blood on bed sheets or mattress

• Adult fleas are shiny and are a reddish brown to black in color and measure about 2.5 mm long

• Adults fleas are parasites as they feed by drawing blood from their host

• They are covered in tiny microscopic hairs that help for easy movement through animal fur.

• Fleas are wingless and can not fly, but they are capable of jumping long distances.

TICKS

• Grayish-white, brown, black, reddish-brown or yellowish in color

• Can carry and transmit Lyme disease

• Tick bites are usually painless

• Ticks can be out during any season, even during winter, as long as the temperatures are above 40 degrees

• Check your body and hair for ticks. Pay attention to behind the ears, elbows, behind the knees, underarms, and private areas
