Introduction

Every service agency uses groups and every practicing social worker id involved in groups, groups. Social work with groups is practiced in adoption agencies, correctional settings hospitals and many other social services.

• Group work has a long and eventful history with milestones and changes along the way. We will trace it from its beginning to comtemporary

Young Christian men association

• George Williams established The Young Christian Men association in 1844 for the purpose of converting young men to Christian values re-creational group activities and socialization activities were a large part of the early

• YMCA programes in 1851 were founded in Ballymore and Boston. The young women Christian association established (YWCA) in Boston in 1866

• The first settlement houses. Toynbee hall established in London in 1844.

• Settlement houses started to use the power of group associations to educate, reform and actual identity it to give emotional support and assistance to new commers

• Settlement houses emphasized “enviornment reform” but they also “ continued to struggle to teach to poor the prevailing middle-class values to work thrift, and abstinence as the key to success. In addition to dealing with local problems through local action, settlement houses played important role in drafting legislation or organizing influence social policy and legislation

• The most noted leader in the settlement house movement was JANE ADDAMS of Hull houses in Chicago. For her achievement she got Nobel piece prize in 1931

1945’s• The year offer second world war II (1939-45)

placed demands on the development of the method through actual practice and through better formulation and theropy (group work litreture)

1950’s

• By the early 1950’s the method developed its own distinctiveness and was introduced in most school of social work through out USA great Britten, Canada and other part of the world

• G. wiilsons “social work practice” (1949) and H.B.Traker’s social group work” (1949-50) appered in a span of only two years. These books made the attems to clarity the order process of group work as a part of the helping functions of social work.

The American Association of Group Worker

• In 1949 a comity of The American association of group work published report in little definition and factions of group worker the report showed required underlined methods in group practice.

Conclusion

• The use of group has expanded to virtually all settings connected with counseling and therapy as well as schools, hospitals and corporate environments. The ideological roots of social group and informal re-creational organizations such as YMCA,YWCA, settlement houses and democratic ideas that all share in the benefits of society following the industrial revilution.
