“Narrative podcasts are story-driven shows, as opposed to interviews or game-show-like recordings. They rely on heavy editing to splice together the right story, pulling from interviews and other recordings, sounds, and music. Many feature a host who narrates the story, almost as if everything else happened in the past.

NPR is, of course, the gold standard here, though narrative podcasts can run the gamut in terms of tone.”

“A useful technique when looking at media production is to think about the choices that have been made by its producers. For example, you could tell these stories in any number of ways – handing over the narrative to an expert; narrating it yourself; reconstructing events dramatically.

But the producers make a choice in the first story which is worth analysing: they switch relatively frequently between interviews and narration.”

“Have the story in mind before you start: sometimes other stories come out during an interview although having a story you want at least enables you to come out with something solid.

Getting the interviewee to record their audio doesn’t always work: Some have a lot of audio hiss in the background which I tried for ages to clean up. Getting interviewees to record a sample in the future will help a lot .”

MY TAKE:

“Narrative podcasting is a hybrid between podcasting and storytelling (with an almost film-like quality of voice and story and background scores). since online audiences hate you to be sales-y or hardsell your brand to them, and since they love being entertained, you have to reframe your entire brand communication (or brand-building education) with them into an entertainment format. So out goes the “blah blah” interview on audio, and in comes the “neo-Shakespeare of a brand marketer” with his actor-interviewees entering and exiting with tales that regale!”
