1. MWC Overview and Themes2. Proximity at the MWC3. Top Proximity Stories

Mobile World Congress Themes1. Reaching more people

with internet (including via Solar Paneled Drones)

2. Wearables - watches, glasses, etc

3. New Phones: Firefox Smartphone only 23$

4. Security emphasized

MWC Overview What a conference. The biggest conference on mobile devices in the world, it was right here in our hometown Barcelona last week. There were some exciting tech devices on display from a device that tracks your sight and let's your eyes control your computer to a Firefox smartphone for $23 to Fun'iki glasses which change color when received a message or a schedule reminder to eliminate the need to constantly check your smartphone. There were some pretty exciting stories in the beacon world too - From IBM´s dual factor authentication to Pizza huts delivery via beacon tech to Madrids public transport using NFCs.

MWC Proximity To start - not only were there many beacon projects presented, the Mobile World Congress is a beacon-based congress. They placed beacons around the airport and the venue. They acted as a guide as soon as the guests landed and assisted all those who downloaded the event app with location based information. This is super helpful is you dont have a network and cant access wifi. There were other creative uses too They even had NFC tags on the vending machines so you could pay with your phone. This is a great use case of effective beacons at an event. We expect beacon uses at events will just keep growing and growing.

Paypal Here

Paypal has some exciting news as well with Paypal Here. According to their CEO:a. The new NFC-enabled PayPal Here Chip and PIN reader will simply pair with

devices via Bluetooth and accept secure payments through the PayPal Here app anywhere. The NFC element will work in the same way as contactless payment works in-store. You tap your card or mobile device on the screen of the reader until the LEDs show at the top of the card reader.

b. With PayPal Here, there’s just a one-off charge for the reader and a small fee for each transaction.

c. Businesses of all sizes will now be able to accept contactless payments, wherever they do business.

IBM

IBM unveiled new set of enterprise apps to transform the nature of work. One in particular Dual factor authentication, a new IBM technique combines near-field communications and smartphones. Dual-factor authentication offers more security since it means a password alone isn't enough to break into another person's account. The password must be supplemented by something a person has.

The Metro System in Madrid

Their public transportation will be working with Telefonica, Samsung and Gemalto to pilot mobile NFC ticketing. Trial participants will download a transport application developed by Samsung specifically for its Galaxy handsets. Users will then be able to register their payment cards and purchase digital tickets for journeys on public transport.

Pizza Hut

Pizza Hut, in collaboration with Visa and Accenture, announced a whole new way to order pizzas: using your car's dashboard.a. While on the commute home for example, you will be able to order with Visa's

Checkout system integrated into the car's dashboard.b. Beacon technology will notify Pizza Hut staff when your car has rolled up so

you can pick up your order.c. "By 2020 it is estimated that more than 250 million vehicles worldwide will

include some form of embedded connectivity," Bill Gajda, senior vice president of Visa.

d. It was just at the MWC in a test case and sadly will not be here in Barcelona yet, but they will roll out test cars equipped with their pizza-ordering power in Northern California over a three-month period starting in the spring.
