4 Introduction 4.1 Welcome to the new consumer age

Empowered consumers armed with multiple technologies and tools are disrupting retail and controlling brands. Buying behavior has dramatically changed and today the store is no longer the final stage in their buying journey. Consumers search online, ask for opinions in social media, go to the store to experience the product and very often return to online for the final purchase. Consumers demand better service and more personalized communications and offerings and expect a seamless shopping experience across all channels.

This new reality is dominated by the cross-channel phenomenon, the use of mobile technologies and the fact that despite of the thread of e-commerce and m-commerce, physical stores still remain the main touch point.

As a result most retailers are now struggling to adapt to this new reality and are asking themselves how to prepare the physical stores for the new role, progress in cross-channel for a seamless shopping experience, effectively adopt mobile technologies to improve operations, leverage prior investments with a future proof solution or develop differentiation strategies to stay competitive and achieve the expected growth.

• Credit sales57 • Configurable coins/banknotes panel58 • Pay with Gift cards and Gift Vouchers59 • Layaways60 • Pay using percentage61 • Pay several tickets at once62

5.3.4.1.1 Credit card payments Credit card payments are managed in conjunction with external PCI (Payment Card Industry63) compliant multifunctional payment terminals, and payment gateways. Different card types or transactions (like credit, debit, Chip&Pin) can be supported depending on the terminal type and payment processor. Integration with the desired terminals or payment gateway will typically be needed. Note that card payments must be processed online. The PCI defines a payment application64 as anything that stores, processes, or transmits card data electronically. Openbravo for Retail solution has isolated the card data to the external device and the authorization network. While the card data is acquired, processed, transmitted and stored by the PCI validated hardware and middleware, Openbravo POS application only handles the type of transaction and its amount. This approach means the Openbravo POS is not a “payment application” as defined by PCI. For implementations that integrate an E-Commerce platform, payments are typically managed directly by the E-Commerce platform payment component.

integrated email options in functionality (document printing/emailing, alerts), capacity to encrypt, use of user/password, flexibility to create email templates, add attachments and formatting.

6.7 Modularity

Extend, don’t Customize Modularity changes the way in which Openbravo can be adapted to user needs. Instead of customizing the code to match user requirements, it is possible to externally -from an independent module- extend functionality and to configure it, providing higher flexibility and greatly simplifying the way to adapt the system to your needs.

Enables Pure Distributed Development The development team working on the creation of a module can work in isolation from other teams; they only need a stable API from the other modules they use and the life cycle of this module (including releases) is independent from other modules, providing a solid basis for high quality output.

Optimized Code Maintenance Developing through modules means packaging independently. With a proper definition of module dependencies and keeping API's stable the process of updating an instance is straightforward and can be performed in one user click.

Encourages Sharing and Repeated Usage of New Functionality Developing through modules makes it much simpler to share new functionality with other people. If developers want to share their modules all they need to do is to package and publish their module in the Openbravo Central Repository. After that, these modules will be publicly available and other users can search for them and install them through a simple installation process.

Integrated Module Management Console (MMC) In-app access to Openbravo's official Central Repository of a wide variety of Openbravo and third-party modules and "scan for updates" capability ensures easy, secure, and reliable distribution and installation of module updates.

6.8 Model Driven Development (MDD)

Page 53: (English) Openbravo Commerce Platform Description March 2014

Openbravo Commerce Platform

© Openbravo March 2014 Release RMP31 Page 53 of 54

Application Modeling Openbravo follows a Model Driven Development (MDD) 111 approach. This means that Openbravo uses a technology agnostic model to define application components, such as windows and processes. Based on this application model, code and other software artifacts are generated. This allows for much greater interconnectivity capabilities than most legacy ERP solutions.

Application Dictionary Openbravo data model information -so called metadata- is stored in the Openbravo Application Dictionary. Application Dictionary maps physical database tables and columns in its own tables and build on top of this the rest of the system (Windows, tabs, fields, etc.). The user interface will be automatically created from this information that results in a powerful tool to rapidly create new windows without needing to write code.

6.9 Development environment Integrated IDE Integration with Eclipse IDE112 helps to save a lot effort in writing new code making development faster and easier.

Integrated SCM Integration with Mercurial113 as a version control system allows an efficient management of source code. Code can be checked out using any Mercurial client.

Effective Database Management Database model (schema, metadata) is automatically exported to xml files (DBSourceManager) for standard management of database code. This greatly optimizes time dedication and reduces potential compatibility issues. Secure access to the database to store, query and remove business objects are provided by the Data Access Layer (DAL) 114, a Hibernate115 layer for accessing database.

Automated Development Tasks and Testing Automated development tasks (Apache Ant116 to build, update, deploy, exportDB, etc.) and automated testing (unit testing with jUnit117 and functional testing based on Selenium118) that help to achieve higher development productivity.
