Thefirsttoolwe’regoingtotalkaboutarelayers.LayersandlayingisoneofthebiggesttoolsthatyouwilyseinPhotoshop.Thisisusedinliterallyeverything,especiallywhenyouhaveaphotographandyouwanttocreateamorestunningpicture.Thischapterwillgooverhowtousethelayeringtool,whatitis,andhowtocreatethebestdesignsathandforyourself,andforyourworkaswell.

The layering tool is basically a way to put layers onto your designs, whether it bebackgrounds, patterns, filters, and the like. This is especially good for when you’reworkingtocreatephotoeffectsforsomething,suchasmaybetryingtobringoutthelightinonelayer,butthenonthenextlayeractuallyworkingtoundothechangesonthis.

Now,layersareessentiallykindoflikelayeringglassontopofeachother.Youcanlookatitandchangeeachofthese,andfromthere,you’remodifyingthelayersofthisslightly.Ifyoudon’twanttochangethepictureatthebase,usuallyaddingalayerwillallowyoutomakeeditstoindividualparts.

Ifyou’retryingtoselectaparticularlayer,youneedtolookfortheonethatyouwant.Youshouldselectthatlayerbeforeyoubegin.Asagoodruleofthumb,alwaysrememberthattheworkinglayerwillhaveabluehighlight.

Youcanthennamethelayer,andthenclicktheokaybutton,anditwilldoitsmagic.Youshouldlearnhowtodothisespeciallyifyouhavesomeradphotoeffectsthatyoubelieveareintegraltousehere.

It’sfrustratingbecauseofhowtediousit is,but ifyoustart toworkwiththis,you’llseewhat thiscandoforyou,andthere isagoodreasonas towhypeopleuse this timeandtimeagain.

The select tool is used to take a part of your picture or some other part from anotherpicture,copyit,andthenpasteitintoyourimageyou’reworkingwith.Youcanalsotaketheimageyou’reworkingwith,takeitout,andthenstarttopasteitintoanotherimage.

HaveyoueverseenthosePhotoshopimagesofforexample,agirldressedasamermaidinthewater,with fish swimming about and such?Yeah, chances are she probablywasn’tactuallyinthewaterwhiledoingthat.Whatitis,isPhotoshopwork,andit’sauseofthistoolthatcanbebothamazing,yetfrustrating.

With this tool, you can take out a part of your image, copy it, and then put it withinanother image. Ifyouwanttohaveyourentiregraphicincludethevariouslayers,youcanhighlightthemallandthenselect.Onceyou’vefiguredouttheareayouwanttocopy,gotothemenubaratthetop,andthencopythemerged.You’llcopyeverysinglegraphictoputitasitsownlayer,whichisprettyneat.

ThesetwotoolsareessentialforthoseworkingtoaddmoretotheirPhotoshopexperience.Theyarekindofhardtounderstand,butattheendoftheday,you’llknowexactlywhatyouwantfromthis,andit’llmakeyourlifethatmucheasieronceyoustartwiththis.

Chapter3–ForFixingYourMistakes

You can create some good blending and other effects aswell. If youwant to create animage where it fades, you’ll be able to do this as well. This is also great for anybackgroundsthatyouhaveinyourphotosthathavevariousimagesintherethatjustdon’tlookgoodatall.

The eraser is one of themost useful tools in Photoshop, especially if you’re correctingmistakes.Youcanalwayspresscontrol+Zinordertoundoanyactionsthatyoudotake,butwhataboutifyoualreadyhaveanimagewithsomefaults?

Well,youcanfixthatwiththis.Itisreallyjustaneraser,butit’soneofthemostusefulerasersoutthere.It’slocatedontheleftofthetoolbar,andit’sreadytohelpyou.

Tousethis,youclickontheerasericon,andyou’llseeatonofsetting,suchashowhardit’llbe,thesizeofthis,andeventheopacityandhowobviousit’llbe.Now,youcanthenuse this on your image, but it’s also important to remember that just like virtuallyeverythingelsewithinPhotoshop, it’llworkonlyon the layer thatyouchoose,somakesurethatyouhavethelayeryouwantbeforeyoubegintoeraseanything.

If youwant to eliminate the background color, there is such a thing as the backgrounderaser. If you have this image that just has this bland and boring background, and youwant toworkongetting ridof it, youcan thenuse thebackgrounderaser tohelperaseimage.

It’salsogood ifyouhavean image that requiresa transparentbackground.Touse this,youjustholdtheerasericonuntilyouseeamenu,andfromthere,clickon“backgrounderaser.”You’llthenbeabletoerase.Youcanthenchangethesizeoftheeraser,oryoucanjustgotothecolorthatyouwantdeletedfromtheselectedlayer.

Youwanttomakesurethatyoudochoosethelayeryouwanttoerasebeforehand,orelseitwon’tworkthewaythatyouwantitto.Withthisaswell,youshouldn’tbeafraidtousetheoversizederasertip.

Thisworkstohelpgetridofthecolors,anditwon’teraseanycolorsthataren’tselected.

Thisisespeciallyimportantifyou’reworkingtoeliminateapartofabackground.

TheCropTool

Thisisanotherbasic,butveryimportanttoolifyou’reworkingtofixmistakes.Let’ssayyou’vegotthisphotos,andit’sabeautifulmasterpiece,totallygreat.Butthen,youseeinthecornerthisreallyuglysortofsight,anditjusttakesitawayfromthepicture.

Ormaybe,youonlywantedtocaptureapartofsomething,andthen,youhaveapieceofgarbage,orevenasetofcarsintheway.Youcangothroughanderaseallofthis,oryoucanusetheclonestamp,whichwe’llbetalkingaboutnext,butlet’sfaceit,that’sjusttoomuchwork,andnotworthyourtime.Thisisalsoagreattoolifyou’relookingtoactuallychangethewayabackgroundlooksinasense.

Well, thecrop toolwill allowyou tocropan image, and itworks just likeevery singlecroptoolthatyou’veusedinthepast.Youpickanarea,youcropitout,youcanlocatethisonthetoolbarontheleft,andyoucanthenselecttheiconinthemenuandthenpulltheboxovertothecroppedarea.

Youcanadjustitjustlikeyoucropanythingelse,whichistheanchorboxesonthesidesandcornersofthis.Youcanmakethecanvaslargeraswellsoyoucanmovearoundandtrytomovearoundthevariousdesignpartsofit.

Forexample,ifyoufeellikeyou’reunsureofwhereyouwanttoputsomething,youcangotothelayerwiththeoverallimage,makethesizebigger,gotootherlayersandstarttochangeitupsothatyoucanthencropitdowntothecorrectsizeafterallthatissaidanddone.Youcanalsocropimagestoacertainratioaswell,butyoudon’talwaysneedtousethatwiththis.

CloneStamp

Theclonestamptoolallowsyoutoputonepartofanimageontopofanotherpartofanimage in a document that is in the samemode of color.You can also put a layer uponanotherlayertoo.

Ifyouarelookingtocreateaduplicatepartofsomething,oreventocoversomethingupsuchasmaybeyouhavesomethinglyingthere,youcanusetheclonestamptohelpwiththat.

Now,tousethistool,youjustchooseanareathatyouwanttoclone,orinessence,copy,andthen,youchoosethatpart,andthenusethatsamecopyandpaintoverasecondarea.

Youcan thenpaint itoverandcontinuewith this. Topaintoverasamplingwhereyoustopandyouwanttocontinuewiththis,youcanselectthealignedoption.Ifyoudeselect

this,youcanthenstartfromthesamplingpointandcontinuethisnomatterwhat.

Now,ifyouhaveacolorthatyouwanttofillthisinwith,youcanthenworktoselecttheareathatyou’relookingtofillwithasolidcolor.Fromthetopmenu,youcanthenchoosethelayer,thenewfilllayeryouneed,andthenfromthereasolidcolor.

Youwillthenseethenewlayerimmediatelypopup,anditwillaskyoutonamethenewfill layer. Youshouldn’tworryaboutchoosingwhatcoloryouwant.Youcanname thelayerandthenclickOKatthatpoint.You’llthenseetheColorPickerwindowpopup.

Thiswillallowyoutochoosewhichsolidcoloryouwant touse inorder tofill this in.Youcanthenselectwhateverbackgroundlayeryouwanttofillin,andfromthere,youcanselect in the color picker the color of the sky, especially if youwant to reallymake asplashwiththevariouscolorsoutthere.

Ifyouwanttoapplypatterns,itcanfirstbecreatedonyourown,oryoucangetroyalty-free patterns through a google search. Fromthispoint,you’llseethepatternfillwindowappear.At thispoint,youcanchoosethepatternandthescaleonit.Youcanthenselectthebackgroundinordertofillitin.youwillseethatthepatternselectedwillchangethebackgroundorareathatyouwouldliketochangeitinto.
