At the close of the Passover meal, Jesus took the bread and wine and gave them new meanings as He instituted the Lord's Supper / Communion / the Eucharist.

Page 19: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

Eucharist means -“to give thanks”.

1 Corinthians 11:25 NKJV25 He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

The world drinks to forget, we drink to remember!

Page 24: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

We remember people for their lives, but Jesus wants us to remember Him also for His death; the spiritual blessings we have as children of God come through His death.

Page 25: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

*Studying the Passover Feast (Passover Seder) helps us to follow what Jesus and His disciples were doing in Mark 14.

*Passover is all about redemption.

Page 26: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

Each year, in Jewish homes across the globe, Jewish people gather together to celebrate the holiday during a traditional feast, which is called the Passover Seder.

Page 27: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

Seder means “order or arrangement”. The Seder commemoratesGod's redemption of Israel and retells the story of their liberation from Egypt.

Page 28: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

It not only recounts Israel's escape from their harsh enslavement under Pharaoh, but also presents a clear picture of Christ as our Redemption.

Page 29: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

Jesus celebrated this feast with His disciples on the evening before His death (Matthew 26, Mark 14, Luke 22, and1 Corinthians 11).

Page 30: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

During the celebration, Jesus used the elements -the bread and the wine of Passover - to explain how His death & resurrection would offer redemptionfrom enslavement to sin.

Page 31: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

Enslavement is a prerequisite for

redemption.

Page 32: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

If Pharaoh had not oppressed Israel in Egypt, the story of Passover would not have been necessary.

Page 33: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

Israel's enslavement prepared the way for the Exodus (Ex. 1:11-12; 6:6).

Page 34: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

Just as the Jewish people were slaves under Pharaoh, so too has all of humanity been enslavedto sin and alienated from God (Isa. 59:2; Rom. 6:15-23; Eph. 2:1-3).

Page 35: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

The story of Passover reminds the Jewish people of their bitter oppression.

EXODUS 12:1-27 NKJV The Passover Instituted

3b every man shall take for himself a lamb, according to the house of his father, a lamb for a household.

Page 37: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

5a Your lamb shall be without blemish.

6b Then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at twilight.

7 And they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses where they eat it.

Page 39: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

8 Then they shall eat the flesh on that night; roasted in fire, with unleavened bread and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.

Page 40: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

11 And thus you shall eat it: with a belt on your waist, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. So you shall eat it in haste. It is the LORD’s Passover.

Page 41: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

13 Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when

Page 44: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

15 Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. On the first day you shall remove leaven from your houses. For whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day,

A little leaven leavens the whole lump! (1 Cor & Gal)

Page 47: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

17 So you shall observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread, for on this same day I will have brought your armies out of the land of Egypt.

Page 48: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

19 For seven days no leaven shall be found in your houses, since whoever eats what is leavened, that same person shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel,

whether he is a stranger or a native of the land.20 You shall eat nothing leavened; in all your dwellings you shall eat unleavened bread.’”

Page 50: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

21 Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel and said to them, “Pick out and take lambs for yourselves according to your families, and kill the Passover lamb.

Page 51: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

22 And you shall take a bunch of hyssop, dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and strike the lintel(the top) and the two (sides) doorposts with the blood that is in the basin.

Page 52: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

23 For the LORD will pass through to strike the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the LORD will pass overthe door and not allow

Page 53: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

the destroyer to come into your houses to strike you.

24 And you shall observethis thing as an ordinance for you and your sons forever.

Page 54: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

25 It will come to pass when you come to the land which the LORD will give you, just as He promised, that you shall keep this service.

Page 55: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

26 And it shall be, when your children say to you, ‘What do you mean by this service?’

Page 56: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

27 that you shall say, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice of the LORD, Who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians and

Page 57: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

delivered our households.’” So the people bowed their heads and worshiped.

EXODUS 12:1-27 NKJV

Page 58: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

Passover 2014 begins the evening of Monday, April 14and ends the evening ofTuesday, April 22.

Page 59: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

The Seder illustrates the bitterness of the Hebrew oppression through both salt water and bitter herbs, typically horseradish.

Page 60: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

*Both elements encourage the participants to recall the tears the nation shed in Egypt.*This bitterness leads God's people to look for their Redeemer.

Page 61: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

God did not design creation to be full of suffering - and just as in the time of the Exodus, our affliction and the brokenness in creation cries out for a Redeemer.

Page 62: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

REDEMPTION:

God poured out ten plagues upon Egypt, but redeemed Israel through the tenth plague.

Page 63: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

God instructed the people to kill a flawless lamb and spread its blood upon the doorposts (two sides) and lintels (across the top) of their homes with hyssop(Exodus 12:5, 21-22).

Page 64: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

Hyssop is commonly used as an aromatic herb and medicinal plant. *The leaves have a lightly bitter taste due to its tannins, and an intense minty aroma.

John 10:9 NKJV9 I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved,

Page 72: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

*God redeemed Israel through the death of the lamb. *John introduced Jesus as the "Lamb of God, Who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29).

Page 73: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

Jesus is the Passover lamb, Who not only redeems Israel, but the entire world through His sacrificial death (1 Corinthians 5:7).

Page 74: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

1 Corinthians 5:7b NKJV

7b Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.

MATZAH:

No Seder is complete without Matzah, the unleavened bread (Exodus 12:19-20).

Page 78: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

Since the children of Israel left Egypt hastily, they did not have time for the bread to rise, so it was made on that very first Passover without leaven, also known as yeast.

Page 79: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

The term "unleavened bread" is derived from the word matzoh (or matzah), which means "bread or cake without leaven(yeast)."

Page 80: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

Matzoh is in turn derived from a word which means "to drain out or suck in the sense of greedily devouring for sweetness."

Page 81: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

So it is quite possible that unleavened bread, while it may have been heavy and flat, may also have been sweet to the taste.

Page 82: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTO9E7h7YPxgHLczo-yc7rA-JYxNQ-YkUKNhmsg7WMh0rNjk0dW

In the Bible, leaven is almost always symbolic of sin.

Page 83: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

1 Corinthians 5:6-8 NKJV

6 Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?

Page 84: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.

Page 85: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

1 Corinthians 5:6-8 NKJV

Page 86: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

Before the beginning of the Passover Seder, all leaven, which is a symbol of sin (1 Cor. 5:6-8), must be removed from the Jewish home.

Page 87: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

The house is cleaned from top to bottom and anything containing leaven is removed.

Page 88: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

Then, the evening before the Passover, the father of the house takes the traditional cleaning implements: a candle, a feather, a wooden spoon, and a bag,

Page 89: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

and searches the house for any specks of leaven Which might have been missed.

Page 90: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

Like leaven which permeates the whole lump of dough, sin will spread in a person, a church or a nation, eventually overwhelming and bringing its

Page 91: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

bringing its participants into its bondage and eventually to death.

http://ts2.mm.bing.net/th?id=HN.608019218623040686&w=250&h=117&c=7&rs=1&pid=1.7

Page 92: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

Romans 6:23 tell us that “the wages of sin is death,” which is God's judgment for sin, and this is the reason that Christ died—to provide a way out of this judgment for

Page 93: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

sin if man will repent of his sins, accept Christ as his Passover sacrifice (1 Cor 5:7), and have his heart changed so that he can conform his life to what God commands.

Page 94: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

Whenever a little bit of sin in a person or a church is permitted, overlooked, and compromised, it works much like leaven in bread.

Page 95: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

It will eventually leaven the whole lump, affecting the whole church or the whole nation as stated in Galatians 5:9 -9 A little leaven leavens the whole lump.

Page 96: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

This permitted sin will lead to other sins and will eventually draw a person or church completely outside of the will and favor of our Father, and our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Page 97: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

It reminds the nation that they had to leave Egypt in haste.

Page 99: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

*During the Seder, each family places three special pieces of matzah in the center of the table.

*The leader breaks the middle matzah & hides it until after the meal.

Page 100: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

At the Last Supper, Jesus handed each of His disciples a broken piece of matzah and told them that it symbolized Hisbrokenness (Luke 22:19).

Page 101: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

*Yet Jesus did not remain broken; He rose from the dead.

*The return of the broken matzah during the Seder is an illustration of Jesus' resurrection.

Page 102: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

The broken body (bread) of Christ was hidden in the earth for three days and three nights.

Then came the Resurrection!

THE CUPS:During the Seder, each participant drinks from four cups, reminding Israel of the four expressions of redemption (Exodus 6:6-7).

The first cup of wine

The Seder begins with a blessing recited over the first of four cups of wine: "Blessed art Thou, Lord our God, King of the

Page 108: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

Universe, Who hast created the fruit of the vine."

Jesus Himself blessed the first cup in Luke 22:17-18.

Page 109: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

The second cup of wineThe second cup is to remind them of the Ten Plagues and the sufferingof the Egyptians when they hardened their heart to the Lord.

Page 110: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

In order not to rejoice over the suffering of their enemies (Prov. 24:17), they spill a drop of wine (which is a symbol of joy) as they recite each of the Ten Plagues,

Page 111: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

thus remembering that their joy is diminished at the suffering of others.

The third cup of wine is: "the Cup of Redemption."

Page 113: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

Jesus handed this cup to His disciples and said it represents the New Covenant (Lk. 22:20; Jer. 31:31-34), which promises both redemption and the forgiveness of sin.

Jeremiah 31:31-34 NKJVA New Covenant31 “Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah—

Page 115: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the LORD.

Page 116: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

Page 117: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

34 No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD.

Page 118: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”

Washing the handsOnce the leaven is removed, the family sits around the table and ceremonially washes their hands with a special laver and towel.

Page 120: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

Jesus also took part in this tradition, but rather than wash His hands, He got up from the table and washed the feet of His disciples, giving us a vivid lesson in humility (Jn 13).

Lighting the candles

Once the house and the participants are ceremonially clean, the Passover Seder can begin.

the light of the world, Messiah Jesus, came into the world (Genesis 3:15 –her Seed).

HaggadahHaggadah means "the telling" - the telling of the story of Passover. *The story is told in response to four questions asked by the children:

Page 126: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

The first question is –why is this night different from all other nights? *The father proceeds to tell the story of the Exodus from Egypt, reading from a book

called "The Haggadah" andusing symbols and object lessons in order to keep the attention of the little ones.

Afikomen

A very curious tradition now takes place. At the table is a bag with three compartments and three pieces of motza.

Page 130: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

http://www.messianicseder.com/matzoh_pocket_side_view.jpg

Page 131: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

The middle piece of motza is taken out, broken, and half is put back into the bag.

Page 132: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

http://eteacherhebrew.com/sites/eteachergroup.com/files/images/afikoman.jpg

The other half is wrapped in a linen napkin and hidden in the home prior to Seder.

Page 133: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

The Search for the Afikomen

After the meal is finished, the leader of the Seder lets the children loose to hunt for the Afikomen, which was wrapped in a napkin and hidden before the meal began.

Page 134: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

The house is in a ruckus as everyone rushes around to be the first to find the Afikomen and claim the prize as grandpa redeems it from the fortunate locator.

Page 137: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

The going rate is $5.00! *Once the leader has retrieved the Afikomen, he breaks it up into pieces and distributes a small piece to everyone seated around the table.

Page 138: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

Page 139: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

The tradition perhaps dates back to the time of Jesus and if this is the case, then Luke 22:19 takes on a greater meaning:

Page 140: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

"And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, 'This is My body given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.'"

Page 141: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

For Jesus the Messiah would have taken the middle one of the three pieces of motza, the piece that stood for the priest or mediator between God and the people,

Page 142: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

broken it as His body would be broken, wrapped half in a linen napkin as He would be wrapped in linenfor burial, hidden it as He would be buried (hidden in the earth),

Page 143: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

brought it back as He would be resurrected, and distributed it to everyone seated with Him, as He would distribute His life to all who believe.

Page 144: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

As He did this, He was conscious that this middle piece of motza represented His own, spotless body given for the redemption of His people.

Page 145: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

As the motza is striped and pierced, His own body would be striped and pierced, and it is by His stripes that we are healed (Isaiah 53:5).

This middle piece of motza, or the Afikomen, is our Communion Bread.

John 6:35 NKJV35 And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.

Elijah's Cup

A place setting remains empty for Elijah the prophet, the honored guest at every Passover table.

Page 150: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

The Jewish people expect Elijah to come at Passover and announce the coming of the Messiah (Malachi 4:5).

Malachi 4:5 NKJV

5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophetBefore the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD.

Page 152: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

So a place is set, a cup is filled with wine, and hearts are expectant for Elijah to come and announce the Good News.

Page 153: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

At the end of the Seder meal, a child is sent to the door to open it and see if Elijah is there.

Page 154: 04 April 13, 2014, Mark 14;22-31 The Lord's Supper

Every year, the child returns, disappointed, and the wine is poured out without being touched.
