LOYALTY SPARKING THANKSGIVING – OUR GIFTS TO THE CHRIST CHILD 

Matthew 1:20 -“… behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph,

thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her

is of the Holy Ghost.”

Joseph was loyal to Mary! Joseph was faithful to Mary! Joseph and Mary were both faithful and loyal to their Lord.

Loyalty is what we observe in marriages where the vows said at the altar are gracefully lived out in daily life. They say, “The wedding lasts about thirty minutes but the marriage lasts a lifetime.” It’s loyalty to one’s life partner that is where the marriage, where the vows come to life and hang in there through sickness and health, burned toast and red roses. Loyalty is a life of commitment lived out in thank-fullness.

On a Wednesday night confirmation class with my new 8th grade class a few years ago, I observed a loyalty sparking a spontaneous thanksgiving the likes of which I may never see again. The young students were new to me, this being the first time I had them in a class. As you know, we have adult guides embedded into the confirmation classes. That night we went around the room introducing ourselves, telling our stories of the places and dates of birth, our hobbies, our favorites… you know the drill. I enjoy taking these pieces of trivia and spinning them into fun discussions with the students and the entire class as they go around the room. Often I will interrupt the storyteller and engage them in conversation about some of their trivia.

When we came to one of the adult guides, he said he was born in 1944. I stopped him and said, “You were born right in the middle of WWII! It was your generation who went to Vietnam. What was your draft number?” The guide replied, packaging his words in humility, “I don’t know what my draft number was, I enlisted” [This was a new story for me about this person whom I have known for 16+ years]. The class was all ears with a moment of silence in the room. I then asked the guide, not knowing his story, “Did you go to Vietnam?” With soft words and a pause, he replied, “Yes, I did”. In a flash, in an instant and without my prompting, the entire 8th grade class broke out into applause in thanks to him for his loyalty to God and country.

That was one of the most beautiful and surprising things I can ever remember witnessing. It was his loyalty that sparked a spontaneous thanksgiving from those who were grateful to him. That reminds me of the words from 1 John 4:19, “We love him because He first loved us.” That could be loosely translated, “We are loyal to Him because He was first loyal to us.”

Loyalty to Christ is what kept eleven of the twelve disciples welded to Christ. And then, that loyalty sparked a spontaneous thanksgiving that wrote the New Testament and seeded the Gospel around the world. That same identical theme is repeated again now at Our Saviour.

goals. Then we will be voting on the gifts needed to accomplish those goals in 2014. This will be done at 10:00 am in our voter’s meeting on that day. I am so hopeful all of you can be there! Please take the time to come, ok?

The following Sunday, December 15th, will be “Loyalty Sunday” at Our Saviour. It will be a day in which we recommit ourselves to following Christ, sparking a response of thanksgiving.

You will find a “Loyalty Response Card” in this newsletter. With loyal and thankful hearts, please prepare to bring that to the service on December 15th, that His mission here may go on joyfully.

Could there be a finer gift to the Christ Child this Christmas than a renewal of our loyalty to Him, sparking our spontaneous gifts of thanksgiving?

‘TREATS’ FOR VETERANS The Northeast Brown County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will collect items until November 10 for the ‘treat cart’ at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, WI. Aside from the items below, you are welcome to include letters of thanks and encouragement! Please consider gathering some of the following items. Please bring all donations to church and place in the appropriate bins near the coatroom.

CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR CHILDREN  

Shoe boxes will be packed with a variety of the items listed below. The ‘packing party’ will begin at 1pm on Saturday, November 9. Feel free to bring the items below to church by Thursday, November 7. Our Saviour has participated in this gathering of gifts in the past; if you would like more information, please contact Maggie Hinz at laughterandblessings@gmail.com or contact Michelle in the office at 468‐4065.  

SUGGESTED ITEMS – Remember these items need to fit into a shoe box… TOYS - small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yos, jump ropes, small Etch A Sketch®, toys that light up or make noise (with batteries), Slinky®, etc. SCHOOL SUPPLIES - pens, pencils and sharpener, crayons or markers, stamps and ink pad sets, writing pads or paper, solar calculators, coloring and picture books, etc. HYGIENE ITEMS - toothbrush, toothpaste, mild bar soap* (in a plastic bag), comb, hair brush, washcloth, etc. OTHER - Hard candy, lollipops, mints, gum, T-shirts, socks, ball caps; sunglasses, hair clips, toy jewelry, watches, flashlights (with extra batteries) (*NOTE: Candy will absorb smell/taste from deodorant soap.) A PERSONAL NOTE - In a separate envelope, you may enclose a note to the child and a photo of yourself or your family. (If you include your name and address, the child may write back.)

PLEASE DO NOT INCLUDE Used or damaged items; war-related items (toy guns, knives or military figures); chocolate or food; liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable items (snowglobes or glass containers); aerosol cans.

THESE COLLECTIONS ARE BEGINNING IN NOVEMBER… The Board of Evangelism has arranged for Our Saviour members to participate in these community giving opportunities this Christmas season. Our Saviour is a collection spot for the Salvation Army’s ‘Toys for Teens’ program. A list of gift ideas can be found in the Narthex. These and many other gifts for children (tots OR teens) can be brought to Our Saviour by Sunday, December 8. Many children in our area will receive no Christmas gifts outside of the Salvation Army’s programs. Toys for Tots/Toys for Teens gifts should be returned unwrapped and unlabeled to the boxes in the 2nd floor coat room area. Another opportunity comes to us through Bornemann Nursing Home. A list of residents and suggested gifts for each will be available soon in the Narthex. Please sign up to indicate what gift(s) you intend to purchase. All gifts should be returned wrapped and labeled. Gifts should be returned to the boxes by the elevator/coat room or to the office no later than Sunday, December 8. Brighten the Christmas season of an elderly person this year!

MANY WAYS TO HELP THE INCARCERATED Interested in helping the Brown County Jail inmates’ spiritual health? Interested in helping the Brown County Jail Chaplain and the Ministry? There are many different ways. - Volunteer in their library: fulfill inmate Bible and book requests, receive the requests, pull the Bibles and books, package them for delivery to pods. - Help to plan high quality awareness/fundraising events, be creative, imaginative, collaborative, and develop a support network and events. - Teach a class (e.g., Houses of Healing, Bible Studies, Family & Marriage, Parenting, Finance). - Donate Bibles, course materials, finances. - Pray.
