Introduction and Summary

In John 16:33 Jesus said, “I have told you these things, so

that in Me you may have [perfect] peace and

confidence. In the world you have tribulation and

trials and distress and frustration; but be of

good cheer [take courage; be confident,

certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.]”

God’s Power over Anxiety

I Peter 5:6-7, Matthew 6:25-34

Anxiety is a psychological and physiological state characterized by cognitive, somatic, emotional, and behavioral components.[1] These components combine to create an unpleasant feeling that is typically associated with uneasiness, fear, or worry.Anxiety is a generalized mood state that occurs without an identifiable triggering stimulus. As such, it is distinguished from fear, which occurs in the presence of an external threat. Additionally, fear is related to the specific behaviors of escape and avoidance, whereas anxiety is the result of threats that are perceived to be uncontrollable or unavoidable.[2]

Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress. It may help a person to deal with a difficult situation, for example at work or at school, by prompting one to cope with it. When anxiety becomes excessive, it may fall under the classification of an anxiety disorder.[3]

How should we respond to life’s experiences? Read Matthew 6:25-34

Your response to life’s experiences determines the extent or level of your anxiety.

If you fall to pieces in a crisis, there wasn't much to you in the first place”

—Proverbs 24:10 MSG

God’s Power over Anxiety, cont’d…

Substitute the power of Faith to overcome Anxiety.

Here’s a biblical example (Study Genesis, chapters 32-33

Pray (Gen. 32:11). If we want to experience God’s power, we must be honest with God. Tell Him you are worried and afraid because of the uncertainty of the future. Be specific in your request, but always appeal on the basis of God’s will.

Plan and Prepare (Gen. 32:13-21). After praying, Jacob made plans and prepared for his reunion with Esau although he was uncertain of the future. He His plan was to appease Esau with gifts. So he gave instructions to his herdsmen on what to do and what to say. Although Jacob’s plan was not what God had in mind, nevertheless, Jacob wanted a peaceful reunion and prepared to meet Esau using the same methods he’d become accustomed to—his way of doing things stemmed from his character, and mindset.

Plan and Prepare, cont’d…

Jacob wrestled with his past and his future and he was persistent because he was desperate for change. In order to overcome anxiety, we must desire change so desperately that we refuse to give up or give in to the struggles that are sometimes “life changing injuries.” Like Jacob, we must be tenacious, and have the audacity to go after the blessing of God relentlessly. His preparations led him to an encounter that changed him for life. In stressful times, we’re really in a position to fight for what God wants for us. So go ahead plan and prepare to the best of your knowledge, skills and abilities and trust God to interrupt your plans with His after you’ve asked Him in prayer.

Peace (Gen. 33:1-4). Jacob’s anxiety subsided and was replaced with peace when from the distance he saw his brother and approached him with a changed demeanor, and attitude.

Peace, cont’d…

Jacob was terrified by his past mistakes, but God answered Jacob’s prayer. Esau ran to meet Jacob; threw his arms around his neck and kissed him. And they both cried. What a relief, I’m sure. Perhaps, you’re experiencing the stressors of family life, relationship issues, financial woes, job loss, foreclosure, and the list goes on. Only a life-changing encounter can induce the blessing of God. Like Jacob, that blessing is “peace” to replace anxiety and worry about what the future holds. The perfect time to pursue the peace of God is when turbulent times demand that we fight to the finish to win. And when God sees your determination to survive the struggle, you may walk away limping but you will receive His blessing.

Review and Discuss1.   Take a minute and think on I Peter 5:7.

2.   How have you responded to stressful situations in the past? How will you respond after this lesson?

3.   Why was Jacob anxious? What are the three steps to overcoming anxiety (worry) ?

4.   In your own words explain how these steps will help you personally.

Look at Jacob’s prayer (Gen. 32:11) and consider your situation and pray to God for help. Key: Be honest. Be specific. Desire God’s will; after all He knows what best and wants to help you more than you know.
