A NOTE FROM PASTOR JOEY

The scriptures record that Jesus said, “Take eat for this is my body broken for you,” and then after supper; “take drink for this is my blood shed for you and for the many for the forgiveness of sins.  Do this often in remembrance of me.”

So traditions believe the elements become Jesus in the blessing and the taking.   In United Methodism we believe in what is called real presence.  That is to say the elements are what they are, bread and grape juice.  However, Jesus is real because he is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow, and Jesus is with us present at the table because that is his promise and God’s grace.

The most important things happen not before or during communion but after.  The music, prayers, meditation elements all are important, but when Jesus said do this in remembrance of me, I think he had something else in mind.  When we love each other, respect each other, care for and support each other, we remember Jesus.  When we see injustice and seek to right it, or see a hurt and seek to heal it, we remember Jesus.  When our words are of hope rather than harshness, and our eyes are on the horizon rather than our own feet, we remember Jesus.  So we take the elements and do what God calls us to do, remembering we are not alone.

HIGHLIGHTS OF WORSHIP

January 5 - Norman Kelsey & Phillip Mottaz went Back To The Future for January announcements. We also recognized Lynne Hutton for her wonderful work with the Christmas Pageant and as our Children’s Choir Director. Pastor Joey’s sermon, “We Just Heard This Story,” was based on Matthew 2:1-12. January 12 - This morning Patty Kelsey shared a moment with the kids. We said farewell to Tara Varilek who is leaving to work for the Foreign Services Department. Norman Kelsey shared a moment for the Missions Team about SOUPER BOWL SUNDAY! Matthew 3:13-17 was the reading that Pastor Joey shared his message, “Let It Be So.”

January 19 - Patty Kelsey shared a moment with the children discussing “Saying Sorry.” Scott Shepard read a letter from Bishop Carcano and notes from the meeting with Bishop Carcano and defrocked Pastor, Frank Schafer. Pastor Joey’s sermon, “The Teachable Spirit,” was based on John 1:29-42.

January 26 - Today was United Methodist Women Sunday and we were treated to a sermon by Deanne Cox titled, “Born To Be A Light” based on Matthew 4:12-23. Many thanks to all of the ladies that took part in worship service; Jodi Smith, Myriel Tyree, Lynn Yoshizumi, Phyllis Hannon, Kathi Ellis, Wendy Welch, Shirley Kurushima, Anita McChesney, Anne Roche, Carol Van Meter, and Margaret Doggett.

Donna Moore’s Brother, Eric, passed away on Friday, January

31st from Cancer. He is a husband and father to two small

children.

Margaret Dixon’s daughter, Joyce King, was hospitalized due to a drug

problem. She is recovering.

Larry Pines is having hip problems and other health concerns.

CHRISTMAS CARD RECYCLINGBy Lynn Yoshizumi

The front panel of Christmas and other greeting cards can be used by the young people at St. Jude’s Ranch for Children in Nevada. The recycled cards program is operated by Kids Corp., a program established to teach entrepreneurship skills to these children that have been abused and/or neglected. They make new greeting cards by removing the front and attaching a new back. The benefits are two-fold: customers receive “green” holiday cards for use and the children receive payment for their work and learn the benefits and importance of “going green”.

Card Donating Tips:

• All types of greeting cards can be used.• Birthday and thank you cards are needed.• Only the front can be used.• Be sure the back side is clear of any writing• They cannot accept Hallmark, Disney or

American Greeting cards• 5”x7” size or smaller is preferred

Please add your cards to the box decorated with Christmas wrapping paper and greeting cards which can be found in the Lounge until Sunday, February 10th. After that, please continue to save greeting cards; next December the collection box will be placed in the Lounge once again. If you prefer not to wait, you can give them to the church office or to me. Thank you.

ASTRONOMY CLUB

Astronomy buffs or those who just like looking at cool things in the sky - join us for a jaunt up into the darkness of Angeles Crest National Forest to enjoy some stargazing.  We should have good views of Jupiter and four of its moons, and will look for a galaxy or two. There will be a crescent moon to observe as well. Telescopes will be available to share, but if others have telescopes to bring along, that would be most welcome! Meet at the church Friday, February 7th, at 6:30 pm. Dress appropriately for the weather – it will be cold in the mountains. (If it is overcast or raining, the event will be cancelled.) Contact Doug Eboch if you need more info.

You can donate to the North Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry on-line.  ~Simply go to the Pantry website nhifp.org.

~Click on “Donate” in the upper right hand corner of the page.  ~Indicate the amount you want to donate. 

~Type the security code you see on the page.  Continue to the next page.  ~Indicate whether you are using Visa, MasterCard or Discover Card. 

~Fill out the necessary billing information.  Click on “Submit”.  ~You should receive a thank you note from the Pantry in a few weeks.

If you shop at Food4Less, you can show your Ralphs card to the checker and the Pantry will receive a small percentage of your Food4Less order, just like when you register and show your

card at Ralphs.  You don’t have to register at Food4Less since it is also owned by Kroger.

*Homeless men, women and children receive about 25% of the bags distributed at the Pantry.  *Any pop-top cans that are donated go into ‘non-cooking” bags that are given out to the homeless.

*17,680 bags were distributed at the Pantry in 2013.  *Each bag is designed to provide emergency food for a family of 4 for 2 days.

*10% of the Pantry clients receive SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)benefits.  *On Nov. 1, 2013, SNAP households saw their benefits reduced between $1 and $36 per month.

Reflections! Joey K. "Donald

Reflections are part of the weekly bulletin inserts for worship. This writing is originally from January 17, 1999 and Pastor Joey’s sermon was titled “Fear Finds Fault, Love Finds A Way” based on John 1:29-42.

John 1:29-42 shares two essential elements of the Christian faith.   The first is the acknowledgment by John that someone greater than he exists.  The second is the recorded narrative of the first disciples as they respond to Jesus.

Earlier in the chapter we are told people wondered why John was baptizing if he wasn’t the Messiah or Elijah, the prophet?  John possessed a clear sense of whom he was and what he was called to do by God.  He was to announce the realm of God and to offer a baptism of repentance in God’s name using water as a symbol of the power of God to recreate spiritually.  John knew just as clearly whom he was not and the text records that as well.  In verses 29-34 John shares the words God has given him as to whom Jesus is and what that means for believers.  

In verses 35-42 we are told that as John shares who Jesus is, his disciples leave and follow Jesus.  Because he knew who he was and more importantly because he knew who Jesus was, John could preach and teach with confidence.  

The central point of this text is that the purpose of our lives is to serve God and know Jesus.  In so doing, we will have meaning and strength as people of faith.  Of course, throughout Church history we have complicated this.   With complex theology, structured doctrine, denominational order and personal hermeneutics we have obscured the strength and majesty of the Biblical message.  

Bill and Gloria Gaither, in a song titled Loving God, Loving Each Other, recapture some of this simple beauty.  “We tend to make it harder, build steeples out of stone; Fill books with explanations of the way.  But if we stop and listen and break a little bread, we could hear the Master say, It’s loving God, loving each other, making music with my friends; loving God, loving each other, and the story never ends.”

Having experienced the true way, John was able to step aside and show others a new way.  John knew the difference between being forgiven, preaching forgiveness and the One whose very name is forgiveness.  His is a story worth knowing and telling.
