Why Jesus was NOT speaking of a physical change

1. Jesus still physically present with the disciples. He still possessed His literal body and blood.




2. Jesus specifically refers to the contents of the cup, after the blessing, as “the fruit of the vine” indicating that it had not changed to his blood.





3. The blood for a covenant requires death, yet Jesus had not yet died (Hebrews 9.15-22).

Synopsis: The second lesson considering figurative language and God’s order (first natural, then spiritual) focusing our attention on the bread from heaven (manna and Jesus) and the eating of His flesh, which leads us to consider the communion. We’ll find that in partaking of the bread and fruit of the vine we share with Christ. Like baptism, the supper may involve physical elements, but has a spiritual significance.
