The Two Movements

Enlightenment- this movement, which began in Europe, spread the idea that knowledge, reason, science could improve society.

Reformation- A German priest named Martin Luther, helped launch a movement called the Reformation. This movement lead to a new form of Christianity called Protestantism.

Thomas Hobbes

He was born on April 5, 1588 in Westport near Malmesbury Wiltshire, England.

Thomas was an English philosophy in the 17th century of England.

His interest were political philosophy, history, ethics, and geometry.

He lived for 91 years and died on December 4, 1679 in Derbyshire, England.

In the Enlightenment he upheld the power of Kings.

John Locke

He was born on August 29th, 1632 in England. His thinking about government and people’s rights had a

major impact on the enlightenment. He went to Westminister School then he went to the

University of Oxford. He studied medicines while in Oxford. His father was a country lawer and military man. His parents were Puritans and John had a good

education. He earned his honor’s at Westminister School in London. Sadly, he died October 29, 1704 in Essex, England. In the Enlightenment, he campiagned the rights

to life , liberty, and poverty.

Baron de Montesquieu

Baron de Montesquieu was born on January 18, 1689 n Chateau de la Brede, La Brede, Aquitaine, France.

He was a iwestern philosopher in the 18th century.

Baron was interested in political philosophy while in France.

He died on February 10, 1755 in Paris France.

Voltaire

Voltaire (which his real name is Francois- Marie Arouet) was born in 1694 in France.

He attended a Catholic Church in Paris and earned his fame as a writer.

He attacked the French court and the power of the Catholic Clergy to speak out the right of free speech.

In court, he criticized intolerance and oppression whenever he saw them.

He went to prison twice and was forced to flee to another city or country several time.

Cesare Beccaria

Beccaria was born in Milan, Italy on March 15, 1738.

He was a pioneer in the field of criminology. He too attended a Catholic School and

received a degree in law from the University of Paula in 1758.

Cesare was an Italian philosopher then soon began to study of criminal law and the justice system in 1763.

He later died on November 28, 1794 in his home land, Milan, Italy.
