A Comparison of Rock Climbing StylesA Comparison of Rock Climbing Styles

•A passionate outdoorsman, Eric Hagerbrant remains especially fond of rock climbing.

Although most individuals think of rock climbing as a single activity, Eric Hagerbrant explains that several different styles exist, and each demands a different skill set.

Traditional climbing involves finding routes up cliff faces without using and predetermined paths or permanent anchors installed in the stone.

•While this proves the most popular form of rock climbing, Eric Hagerbrant also points out that many enjoy sport climbing.

Sport climbers use anchors and other aids attached to the wall and scale it according to an established route.

Indoor climbing facilities have also sprung up around the nation, which beginners often use to hone their skills before attempting a natural wall.

•Other styles of climbing include ice climbing, which demands specialized equipment and knowledge; mountaineering, which combines hiking, rocking climbing, and outdoor survival; and deep water climbs, where individuals jump from a rock into a body of deep water.

The most advanced climbers may attempt solo climbs, but attempting any feat without protection, safety ropes, or a second set of hands proves extremely dangerous.
