Un año más es una gran satisfacción dar la bienvenida al calendario de competiciones hípica en España al Mediterranean Equestrian Tour, así como a todos los jinetes y amazonas participantes en una nueva edición del mismo.

Nuevamente las magníficas instalaciones del MET en Oliva van a albergar un circuito ya consolidado en el ámbito internacional y que cada año se supera en número de participantes y competiciones, extendiéndose este nuevo año durante casi cuatro meses.

Durante este inicio de la temporada internacional, España aparece como el país que acoge los principales circuitos, y el Mediterranean Equestrian Tour ocupa un lugar preferente.

Quiero agradecer en nombre de toda la hípica española el esfuerzo de superación que el comité organizador hace cada año, así como a todos los patrocinadores y colaboradores del evento su fundamental aportación para que sea posible su llevarlo a cabo.

Finalmente, también enviar mis mayores deseos de éxito para todos los participantes.

Once again this year, I have the pleasure to welcome the calendar of equestrian competitions in Spain with the Mediterranean Equestrian Tour and to greet all riders who participate in this new edition of the event.

The magnificent facilities of the MET in Oliva will host, once more, a competition that is well-established on an international level, with a new record in numbers of participants and competitions each year and a duration of almost four months in this edition.

At the beginning of the international season, Spain is the country that hosts the main circuits, with the Mediterranean Equestrian Tour occupying a special place.

I would like to thank the organising committee in the name of the entire Spanish equestrian sports scene for its continuous efforts to improve year after year, as well as all sponsors and partners of the event for their crucial contribution in making it happen.

Finally, my very best wishes for success to all participants.

Es un placer contar con un ya consolidado comité organizador de concursos internacionales que en los últimos años ha recibido a los mejores binomios del mundo, acercando la competición de máximo nivel a la Comunidad Valenciana, con la importancia que conlleva el impacto importante para todos los practicantes de salto de obstáculos, así como aficionados a la doma clásica.

Agradecer y felicitar al Director General y a todo su equipo del MET el convertir en una realidad el proyecto Hípico, así como reconocer su capacidad organizativa, deseando continúen sus éxitos y que la proyección de futuro sea todavía mejor.

Agradezco especialmente la colaboración de nuestros patrocinadores, que hace posible que la prueba salga adelante. Con el apoyo de grandes empresas como Suzuki, Oliva Nova puede seguir mejorando sus instalaciones año a año. También quiero reconocer el gran trabajo que viene realizando todo el equipo del CEON en los últimos tiempos para que este evento se consolide cada vez más como uno de los referentes del circuito hípico internacional. Es su esfuerzo lo que nos ha llevado a la que es ya la sexta edición del Spring MET, en la que esperamos repetir el éxito de años anteriores y continuar expandiendo la afición por el mundo del caballo en la Comunidad Valenciana.

We also congratulate the team at CEON for their tireless work in constantly improving and consolidating the experience to become one of the reference points of competitions on the international equestrian circuit. El MET, que celebra ya su sexta edición en 2017, con dos Tours, el Spring MET y el Autumn MET, atrae a jinetes de todo el mundo. Ofrece unas instalaciones de primera categoría, con estupendas pistas de arena, construidas por Klaus Dammann y una pista de hierba (140 x 80m), en combinación con la posibilidad de competir al aire libre, cerca de la playa, en un clima único en Europa, junto con la excelente oferta turística, de ocio y gastronomía de la región.

El Centro Ecuestre Oliva Nova ofrece, además de 330 boxes fijos también 670 boxes portables dentro de grandes carpas, con una capacidad de 1.000 caballos en cada competición. La zona de establos incluye también un amplio parking, dotado con conexiones de agua y luz para los camiones de caballos y caravanas.

Además, hay una amplia zona con gradas para el público y un village comercial que ofrece diferentes tiendas.

MET, celebrating the sixth edition in 2017, with two Tours, Spring MET and Autumn MET, is attracting riders from all over the world. Offering first class facilities with excellent sand arenas built by Klaus Dammann and a magnificient grass arena (140 x 80m), together with the possibility of outdoor competitions close to the beach and a unique climate in Europe, on top of the region’s great touristic, leisure and gastronomic offer.

Centro Ecuestre Oliva Nova offers beside 330 permanent stables, 670 portable stables under big tents and pro-vides a capacity for 1.000 horses per show. The stable area also includes a spacious parking, equipped with water and electricity connections for all horse trucks and caravans.

Furthermore you find a large area with many stands for spectators and a Village, that offers various shops.

Janne-Friederike Meyer

Janne-Friederike Meyer es una fiel visitante del Mediterra-nean Equestrian Tour en Oliva, y este año será el cuarto año consecutivo que la amazona alemana viene a competir. “Siem-pre me gusta ir a Oliva; es el sitio idóneo para los caballos jóvenes o nuevos para conocerlos mejor y para que adquieran experiencia,” explica Janne.

En los años anteriores, Janne se fue al MET con unos siete ca-ballos, montándolos ella misma. Pero este año, llevará también al jinete de su establo y un total de diez caballos. “Es realmente agradable que las pistas estén tan cerca, sino, no hubiera po-dido montar a siete caballos yo misma. Si tienes que subir o bajar en la lista de salida, no hay ningún problema, los emplea-dos son todos muy amables y flexibles. También me gusta la posibilidad de alquilar un sitio donde vivir a unos pasos y las condiciones en el recinto de competición son excelentes. Otra cosa que aprecio mucho es que la organización siempre tiene muy buenos diseñadores de pistas, así que los concursos están muy bien construidos.”

Con su boda el próximo 14 de enero, Janne tiene un período con mucha actividad delante. “E inmediatamente después de la boda, saldremos para el MET, así que será una especie de luna de miel,” se ríe Janne, cuando ella y su pareja Christoph Zimmermann se dirijan hacia España.

Una luna de miel sobre todo con caballos jóvenes, pero también con sus superestrellas Goja y Cellagon Anna que vendrán para entrenarse y para disfrutar de la playa. “Siempre pasamos mucho tiempo montando en la playa mientras estamos en el Mediterranean Equestrian Tour. Es tan agradable para los caballos ver algo diferente, así que cuando no saltamos, siempre bajamos al mar.

Janne-Friederike Meyer is a regular visitor at the Mediterra-nean Equestrian Tour in Oliva, and this year will be the fourth year in a row that the lady rider German comes to compete. “I always like to go to Oliva; it is the perfect place to bring young or new horses to get to know them and give them experience,” Janne explains.

During previous years, Janne went to the MET with more or less seven horses which she rode herself but this year she will also bring her stable jockey and ten horses in total. “It is really nice that the rings are so close, if not I wouldn’t have been able to ride seven horses myself. If you have to move up or down on the start lists it is never a problem to adjust, the staff are all friendly and flexible. I also really like that you can rent a place to live just around the corner, and the conditions at the show ground are great. Another thing that I really appreciate is that the organization al-ways has really good course designers so the courses are very well built.”

With a wedding coming up on the 14th of January, Janne has a busy time ahead of her. “And straight after the wedding we will leave for the MET, so it will be kind of a honeymoon,” Janne laughs as she and her partner Christoph Zimmermann will head for Spain.

A honeymoon with mostly younger horses that is, but also with her super stars Goja and Cellagon Anna that will come along to train and to enjoy the beach. “We always spend a lot of time riding on the beach when we are at the Mediterranean Equestrian Tour. It is so nice for the horses to see something else, so whenever they are not jumping

Con unas cuadras en Madrid y una participación en el Mediterra-nean Equestrian Tour, el deporte ecuestre tiene un rol muy importante en la vida diaria de la farmilia Marsa. Cada año, la familia emprende el viaje a Oliva, y tienen muchos motivos para volver.

José no monta él mismo, pero su hermana Diana Marsa-Lafarge es una exitosa amazona profesional y su hija Carolina Marsa Wamsteker también compite en pruebas internacionales. “Así empezó todo,” explica José. “Tenemos unas cuadras en Madrid, y las personas que iniciaron el Mediterranean Equestrian Tour son de la misma zona que no-sotros. Así oímos hablar del Tour y nos involucramos,” dice José Marsa.

La familia Marsa es accionista del Mediterranean Equestrian Tour en Oliva desde sus comienzos, y realmente disfrutan de formar parte del conjunto. La familia visita el Spring Met y el Autumn MET cada año, y éste no es ninguna excepción. “Competiremos en el Spring MET en marzo y abril, y volveremos en octubre al Autumn MET. Mi hermana llevará seis caballos para montar ella misma, y además tiene unos alumnos, así que en total serán trece caballos los que viajan a Oliva.”

La intimidad del Mediterranean Equestrian Tour es una de las carac-terísticas más apreciadas por José Marsa. “Las instalaciones son fan-tásticas con todo tan cerca. Y lo que más me gusta es que la playa está a pocos pasos – tanto para nosotros como para los caballos. He estado en varios otros eventos, pero nunca he visto una competición tan cerca de la playa como el Mediterranean Equestrian Tour. El hotel en Oliva es bonito y a poca distancia del recinto de competición, y si quieres salir por la noche, hay una excelente selección de restaurantes a pocos minutos en coche. Realmente me gusta ir a Oliva,” detalla José.

¿Y cómo ve José el futuro del Mediterranean Equestrian Tour? “Creo que todas las personas implicadas en el Tour hacen un trabajo estupendo y todos son muy simpáticos y agradables. Con la nueva directora del evento, Bettina Pöhls, todo está muy bien organizado. Creo que el Mediterranean Equestrian Tour tiene un futuro brillante por delante. Me gustaría ver la ampliación de las instalaciones, pero sin traer más caballos a cada competición – es suficientemente grande tal como está. Lo más importante es hacer eventos cada vez mejores; en mi opinión siempre se puede mejorar y Bettina se centra mucho en ello, nos sentimos muy afortunados de tenerla.”

“En el futuro, tal vez podemos aspirar a organizar unos eventos mayores, quizás incluso de 4* o 5*, pero también me gustaría ver unas competiciones nacionales. ¡Veamos lo que trae el futuro!”

With a stable in Madrid and shares in the Mediterranean Eques-trian Tour, equestrianism plays a big part in the Marsa family’s daily life. Every year the family takes the trip to Oliva, and there are numerous reasons that they always return.

José does not ride himself, but his sister Diana Marsa-Lafarge is a suc-cessful professional rider and his daughter Carolina Marsa Wamsteker is also competing in international classes. “This is how it all started,” José explains. “We have a stable in Madrid, and the people that initiated the Mediterranean Equestrian Tour are from the same area as us. That is how we heard about the Tour, and got involved,” José Marsa explains.

The Marsa family has been shareholders in the Mediterranean Eques-trian Tour in Oliva since the very beginning, and really enjoy to be a part of it all. Every year the family visits the Spring MET and the Autumn MET, and this year will be no exception. “We will be competing at the Spring MET in March and April, and then be back in October for the Autumn MET. My sister will bring six horses to ride herself and then she has some students, so it will be thirteen horses in total travelling to Oliva.”

The intimacy of the Mediterranean Equestrian Tour is one of the qualities that José Marsa appreciates the most. “The facilities are fan-tastic with everything being so close. And the thing I like the most is that the beach is just around the corner – both for us and for the hors-es. I have been to several other events, but I have never seen a show so close to the beach as the Mediterranean Equestrian Tour. The hotel in Oliva is nice and near the show ground, and if you want to go out at night there is an excellent selection of restaurants a short drive away. I really like to go to Oliva,” José remarks.

So how does José see the Mediterranean Equestrian Tour’s future? “I think all the people involved with the Tour are doing a great job, and they are all very nice and friendly. With our new show director Bettina Pöhls now in charge, everything is very well organized. I think we can look forward to a bright future for the Mediterranean Equestrian Tour. I would like to see us expand the facilities, but without bringing more horses in per tour – it is big enough as it is. The most important aim is to make better and better events; I believe you can always improve and Bettina is very focused on this, which is also why we are so lucky to have her.”

“For the future, perhaps we can aim to organize some bigger shows – maybe even 4* or 5* shows, but I would also like to see us do some national shows. Let’s see what the future will bring!”

El otoño pasado, Jennifer Goddard vino a participar en el Mediterranean Equestrian Tour por primera vez. Cuando el Autumn MET había terminado, la amazona americana decidió quedarse – haciendo de Oliva su base para el invierno, preparando para el Spring MET 2017 que empieza en enero.

“Fui al Mediterranean Equestrian Tour en octubre del año pasado sin saber lo que me esperaba – era la primera vez que competí en España. No tardé en darme cuenta que las instalaciones son excelentes y el ambiente es muy agradable y relajado. Y por supuesto el clima es maravilloso – lo prefiero al clima más fresco en el norte de Europa,” dice Jennifer y sonríe, aludiendo a los últimos inviernos que pasó en el norte de los Países Bajos.

Goddard, su mozo de cuadra y sus siete caballos están alojados en Oliva entre el Autumn y el Spring MET. “Realmente prefiero montar al aire libre; no soy una atleta de interior, así que decidí seguir entrenando en el exterior entre los dos tours. Aquí, tenemos unas instalaciones muy buenas. En primer lugar, todas las pistas de arena proporcionan una base de apoyo de gran calidad para los caballos. Utilizamos las pistas para el trabajo sin obstáculos a diario y si queremos montar un recorrido de obstáculos, saltamos en una de las grandes pistas de calentamiento.”

Según Jennifer, una de las mayores ventajas de entrenar en el exterior en Oliva es que mantiene a su caballos en un buen estado físico. “No solo tenemos las grandes pistas de arena; también nos permiten montar en la playa en tres días de la semana, lo que hace que los caballos estén realmente en forma. Durante mi estancia aquí, he podido hacer un buen entrenamiento con mis caballos bien y de manera variada – es mucho más agradable que hacerlo en el interior.”

Goddard también da una buena evaluación para los establos en el Mediterranean Equestrian Tour. “Hemos alojado a los caballos en los boxes fijos desde que llegamos para el Autumn MET. Los boxes son amplios, y colocamos cubre boxes para los caballos que se ponen muy contentos de poder observar su entorno. Lo que también marca una gran diferencia son los bebederos automáticos en los boxes; no tenemos que llevar permanentemente cubos de agua.”

La organización del evento siempre está cerca, relata Jennifer – y siempre están dispuestos a ayudar. “Los días laborables, siempre hay alguien en la oficina, y el personal es muy servicial”, dice Jennifer.

La amazona de 25 años se ha enamorado de la comarca de Oliva y alquila dos apartamentos en los alrededores del recinto de competición – uno para ella misma y uno para su mozo. “Es la temporada baja aquí, así que hay mucho donde elegir. Voy al gimnasio, a jugar al tenis y al spa en el Oliva Nova Beach and Golf Resort, así que tengo una vida divertida aparte del deporte ecuestre,” explica Jennifer.

Cuando el concurso se reanuda en enero, Jennifer estará lista – con unos caballos en plena forma. “He empezado a entrenar con Stanny Van Paesschen, quien está aquí también durante buena parte del invierno, y es realmente competitivo. Estoy aprendiendo a llegar a mis límites. Espero que esta actitud combinada con el confort y diseño las pistas en el Mediterranean Equestrian Tour conducirá automáticamente al progreso,” termina Goddard.

Last Autumn, Jennifer Goddard came to compete at the Mediterranean Equestrian Tour for the first time. When the Autumn MET was finished, the American rider had decided to stay – making Oliva her base for the winter as she got ready for the Spring MET 2017 to kick off in January.

“I came to the Mediterranean Equestrian Tour in October last year, and did not know what to expect – it was my first time competing in Spain. I quickly found out that the facilities here are great, and the atmosphere is very laid-back and nice. Then there is of course the climate, which is wonderful – I prefer this over the colder climates of Northern Europe,” Jennifer smiles referring to the last few winters that she has stayed in the north of Netherlands.

Goddard has accommodated herself, her groom and her seven horses in Oliva between the Autumn and Spring MET. “I really prefer to ride outdoors; I am not really an indoor-rider so I decided to keep on going outside with my horses in between the two tours. Here, we have great facilities. First of all, the sand rings are big with quality footing. On a daily basis, we use the flatwork ring and if we need to set a course, we jump in one of the big warm-up rings.”

One of the biggest benefits of staying outdoors in Oliva, according to Jennifer that she can maintain a high level of fitness for her horses. “Not only do you have the huge sand rings here; we have also been allowed to ride on the beach three days during the week which really gets the horses fit. During my stay here, I have been able to work my horses really well and varied – it is just much more pleasant than going indoors.”

Goddard also gives the stabling facilities at the Mediterranean Equestrian Tour good critics. “We have been staying in the permanent stables since we came here for the Autumn MET. The boxes are big, and we put up the stable guards for the horses that are really happy with their views. What also makes a big difference is the automatic water in the boxes, so we don’t have to think about filling up endless amount of water buckets.”

The show management is never far away, Jennifer tells – and are always ready to assist. “During the week-days there are always people in the office here, and they are so accommodating,” she says.

The 25-year-old showjumper has taken a real liking to the area around Oliva, and rented two apartments close to the show grounds – one for herself and one for her groom. “It’s a bit off-season here, so there is a lot to choose from. I use the gym, tennis court and spa at the Oliva Nova Beach and Golf Resort, so I have a bit of a life here next to the riding as well,” Jennifer explains.

When competition resumes in January, Jennifer will be ready – with a team of horses in top shape. “I have started to train with Stanny Van Paesschen, who is also here during much of the winter season and he is really competitive. I am really learning to push myself. Put this in combination with the rings, the tracks and the course design here at the Mediterranean Equestrian Tour and hopefully improvement comes automatically,” Goddard finishes off.

La simpática pareja – Holandés y Austríaca – son participantes habituales en Oliva desde 2014. “Las instalaciones del Mediterranean Equestrian Tour son fabulosas,” dice Marc. “Lo que más aprecio es que no es demasiado grande, todo dentro del recinto de competición está bastante cerca y es compacto. Todas las pistas son muy buenas, y la pista de hierba es fantástica. En el MET, siempre tienen buenos diseñadores de pistas, lo que también es muy importante. En resumen, hay muchas cosas positivas que mencionar.”

Como viene en familia con dos niños, Houtzager también constata que el Mediterranean Equestrian Tour es muy propicio para parejas con niños. “El alojamiento en los alrededores es muy agradable y cerca del recinto de competición. Es fácil pasar por casa entre las pruebas, lo que puede ser necesario si viajas con niños,” como Marc detalla.

Houtzager y Kayser suelen participar en la tercera parte del Spring MET, para poder seguir saltando al aire libre cuando vuelven a los Países Bajos. “Desde luego siempre planeamos según lo que mejor se adapte a las demás competiciones en nuestro calendario y dependiendo de los caballos en nuestras cuadras – pero nos gusta venir en marzo, cuando hace buen tiempo con temperaturas agradables, Así, podemos seguir trabajando en el exterior con unos caballos en forma, en excelentes condiciones para competir.”

The likeable couple – Dutch and Austrian – have been regulars in Oliva since 2014. “I think the facilities at the Mediterranean Equestrian Tour are super,” Marc says. “What I appreciate the most is, that it is not too big, eve-rything within the show ground is quite close and compact. The rings are all very good, and the grass ring is fantastic. At the MET they always have good course designers, which is also very important. All in all, there are a lot of positive things to be said.”

Coming as a family with two children, Houtzager also finds the Mediterranean Equestrian Tour to be very friendly for cou-ples with kids. “The housing is really nice, and close to the show ground. You can easily drop by at home in between the classes, which is sometimes necessary when you have children with you,” Marc details.

Houtzager and Kayser usually prefer to come for the third part of the Spring MET, so that when they return home to the Netherlands they can continue competing outdoors. “Of course we always plan out from what fits best to the other shows on our schedule and to what horses we have in our stables – but we like to come down in March when the weath-er is nice and warm. This way, when we come back home we can keep on going outside with horses that are fit and in super show condition.”
