HISTORY
Games and sports have been around for thousands of years. The Egyptians' senet is the earliest example of a board game and dates back to 3000 B.C. The first traces of competitive sports also go back to the Egyptians around 2000 B.C. In an Egyptian tomb at Beni Hasan, archeologists found numerous wrestling pictures depicting many holds and moves that are still used today, according to HistoryWorld.net.
IMPORTANCEIndia is indeed a unique country where tradition and modernity co-exist without much difficulty .This holds true in the sports field too . Alongside history , culture and arts India has thrived in the fields of different sports . Cricket , hockey , tennis, shooting , archery and a host of other contemporary sports are played in the country. If on the one hand there is equal interest in homegrown games like kho-kho , gilli-danda and kabaddi. Besides this, there are other popular games like pithu, marbles and hide & seek which children play in their homes and on the streets. Traditional games play important role in developing sports skills in every human being.
BENEFITS OF SPORTS AND GAMES
A study reported in the "New England Journal of Medicine" concluded that leisure activities, including board games, were associated with a decreased risk of dementia in senior citizens. Games have also long been used to educate children, teaching things such as taking turns, following rules and enhancing verbal communication. Playing games together also strengthens family and community ties, providing a nonconfrontational opportunity to communicate and build relationships between children, teens, parents and the elderly.

DIFFERENT SPORTS AND GAMES
FOOTBALLFootball is a family of team sports that involve, to varying degrees, kicking a ball with the foot to score a goal. Unqualified, the wordfootball is understood to refer to whichever form of football is the most popular in the regional context in which the word appears. Sports commonly called 'football' in certain places include: association football (known as soccer in some countries); gridiron football(specifically American football or Canadian football); Australian rules football; rugby football (either rugby league or rugby union); and Gaelic football. The Ancient Greeks and Romans are known to have played many ball games, some of which involved the use of the feet. The Roman game harpastum is believed to have been adapted from a Greek team game known as "ἐπίσκυρος" (Episkyros)[11][12]or "φαινίνδα" (phaininda),[13] which is mentioned by a Greek playwright, Antiphanes (388–311 BC) and later referred to by theChristian theologian Clement of Alexandria (c. 150 – c. 215 AD).
SWIMMINGSwimming is an individual or team sport and activity. Competitive swimming is one of the most popular Olympic sports, with events in butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle, and individual medley. In addition to these individual events, Olympic swimmers also take part in relays. Swimmers can also compete in open-water events Evidence of recreational swimming in prehistoric times has been found, with the earliest evidence dating to Stone Agepaintings from around 10000 years ago. Written references date from 2000 BC, with some of the earliest references to swimming including the Iliad, the Odyssey, the Bible, Beowulf, the Quran and others. In 1538, Nikolaus Wynmann, a German professor of languages, wrote the first swimming book
ARCHERYArchery is the sport, practice or skill of using a bow to propel arrows. The word comes from the Latin arcus. Historically, archery has been used for hunting and combat. In modern times, it is mainly a competitive sport and recreational activity. A person who participates in archery is typically called an archer or a bowman, and a person who is fond of or an expert at archery is sometimes called atoxophilite. The bow and arrow seems to have been invented in the later Paleolithic or early Mesolithic periods. The oldest signs of its use in Europe come from the Stellmoor (de) in the Ahrensburg valley (de) north of Hamburg, Germany and dates from the late Paleolithic, about 10,000–9000 BC. The arrows were made of pine and consisted of a mainshaft and a 15–20 centimetres (5.9–7.9 inches) long fore shaft with a flintpoint. There are no definite earlier bows; previous pointed shafts are known, but may have been launched by spear-throwers rather than bows. The oldest bows known so far come from the Holmegård swamp in Denmark.
CRICKETCricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a cricket field, at the centre of which is a rectangular 22-yard-long pitch with a wicket (a set of three wooden stumps) sited at each end. One team, designated thebatting team, attempts to score as many runs as possible, whilst their opponents field. Each phase of play is called an innings. After either ten batsmen have been dismissed or a fixed number of overs have been completed, the innings ends and the two teams then swap roles. The winning team is the one that scores the most runs, including any extras gained, during their one or two innings. The earliest definite reference to cricket being played comes from evidence given at a 1598 court case which mentions that "creckett" (sic) was played on common land in Guildford around 1550.
Horse racingHorse racing is an equestrian performance sport, involving two or more jockeys riding horses over a set distance for competition. It is one of the most ancient of all sports and its basic premise – to identify which of two or more horses is the fastest over a set course or distance – has remained unchanged since the earliest times.Horse racing has a long and distinguished history and has been practised in civilisations across the world since ancient times. Archaeological records indicate that horse racing occurred in Ancient Greece, Babylon, Syria, and Egypt. It also plays an important part of myth and legend, such as the contest between the steeds of the god Odin and the giant Hrungnir in Norse mythology.
Role of TechnologyTechnology plays an important part in modern sports. With it being a necessary part of some sports (such as motorsport), it is used in others to improve performance.Sports science is a widespread academic discipline, and can be applied to areas including athlete performance, such as the use of video analysis to fine-tune technique, or to equipment, such as improved running shoes or competitive swimwear. In order to control the impact of technology on fair play, governing bodies frequently have specific rules that are set to control the impact of technical advantage between participants.
Popularity of gamesAssociation Football is the most popular sport in the World. Association Football is the most popular sport in 320 National Associations (countries) out of the total 345 National Associations on the planet. It has more number of registered players than any other sport in the world. The revenue generated by Association Football is higher than any other sport in the world. IMPORTANCE OF SPORTSSports is undoubtedly an activity that is fun to do , but it has many other positive effects on a person’s life as well. The ideal of a good and perfect life is to have a sound mind in a sound body. This is recognized by all as the best means of performing our duties. Body and mind should work at their best, and they cannot do so unless both are in good order. The limbs must be- supple, active and obedient to the will. The best way to keep the limbs fit is to exercise them in sports and games of physical skill and strength.
